I'm in the process of making a resource pack with random mob textures. I have it working fine for vanilla mobs, but I also use Better Animals/Better Animals Plus, so I'm adding support for them and would ideally like to randomize those as well. I've been messing with different file paths for a while now trying to make it happen and at this point really just want to know if it's even possible to do with Optifine, or if I'd have to do something more complicated to achieve it.

Someone was trying to do this a few weeks ago and regrettably it isn't currently possible. You could read the response to the last person here: https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding-java-edition/resource-packs/resource-pack-help/2985810-how-to-make-alternate-textures-for-mods and if you really, really want to be certain can always try asking the Optifine folks at their discord https://discordapp.com/invite/tKxWtyf
Dang, I was afraid of that. Thanks for saving me a lot of headaches endlessly moving things around trying to make it happen, anyway.
