Hey guys, I'm making a resource pack to change the music discs to my own choice of music, and I wanted the descriptions of the discs to match the songs.
I extracted the en_us.json file from the jar and put it in ".minecraft\resourcepacks\custom_songs\assets\minecraft\lang" , but when I edit the descriptions it doesn't work at all.
I even tried changing a block name to see if it worked and it still didn't work.

This may be a silly question, but did you make a resource pack, or is this literally all that you did: create a folder structure and place the file inside it, hoping altering might change it? If these steps are all you've done then you should know that a folder such as custom_songs being in the resourcepacks folder isn't actually a resource pack without a pack.mcmeta https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Tutorials/Creating_a_resource_pack#pack.mcmeta also, even with a valid .mcmeta file you have to make you you activate it in your resource pack selection menu if you hope to see it in game.
Sorry if it seems like I'm belittling you by asking these questions, but the game is played by people of all ages and understandings of the game. I hope this information has been helpful and if you need further help I always tell people the best way to get a problem solved is to upload your pack and let us have a look at exactly what you're dealing with. Good luck,

don't worry i already have a pack.mcmeta in the correct place and it's coming up as a resource pack and the custom textures/sounds i made for the discs are all working correctly, it's just the en_us.json file that doesn't seem to be workin

Based on the information you've given us, this should be working. I replicated your steps of extracting the en_us.json and putting it in my own pack at mypack/assets/minecraft/lang and when I changed the name of a block and reload with F3+t the altered text appears in game. The only 2 things I could think of would be if you have another pack higher than it in resource pack list (kind of assume you tried running it alone and it still didn't work) OR is it possible you aren't using en_us? There are several English language selections and if, by chance, you are on English (Canada) instead of English (US) then that would be a different file you would have to alter. I would say to check your language setting if you aren't using the US language then either switch to it or locate and extract the appropriate language file. I'm all out of ideas beyond that, if you could upload a minimal resource pack and link it here I might be able to help a little more but I can't replicate the bug as is.

ohhhh this could be it... I'm set to Australian English, but in the .jar, en_us was the only file and I couldn't find any others, where are they stored?
Hey, I'm late But What I Did And Works I'm Sure every time. Open The .minecraft Folder, Go To Versions, The Go-To *Which Ever Minecraft Version U Have* You'll See A *Version*.Jar File With A Torch As A icon,(if u Can See It) I Recommend U get Winrar https://www.win-rar.com/download.html?&L=0
After That ur Gonna, right Click And Select (Open With Win-RAR) Then Go Into assets, Minecraft, Lang, Drag It To your Desktop, Close It, Then Close (.minecraft)
Open Your Texture Pack And Go All the Way Where your Customized Lang Is, Delete That One, And drag the New One To Your Lang Folder, Open It And
Close/Erase/Delete All The Other Tabs There Except For The One Your On, And Then BOOM your Done, customize It,
there may be extra steps such as for You eng_us.json into another language blah blah but this worked, and ig at the same time it updates it for u? idk
This Worked For Me I guess Maybe itll Help Someone Whos Reading? Im not sure Bye Guys
That only works for the en_us.json language specifically because they want to change the language they are speaking, and it's best to search an item's name in the language you are always using.
Also maybe you should use Grammarly if you had bad grades in your English class.

Is there a special way of getting this to work?
Did you hit F3+T in game? This makes the selected resource packs reload and actually see the changes you have done.

Go to .minecraft/assets/indexes and open 1.14.json and search for your language.
The hash value next to it is what it's called, when the game needs to read it.
The first 2 letters is the folder name in .minecraft/assets/objects, where you can find the hash value file.
Copy this file into your resource pack and rename it back to it's original name, that is next to the hash value in the index.
This is the file you want to edit.

okay so do i take the hash file and name it to en_au.json? or do i leave it as b122ac25ae1c...etc?
also do i put it in the exact same file structure as it is in /objects or do i put in /lang?
You name it en_au.json and put it into /lang.
