you may have seen me around asking about help with my perfect resource pack, but now I ran into a problem, all the blocks look so similar, I just want some difference. Is there a way to assign random textures to a block? If so, pls tell me!

I'm not sure, but maybe you can create multiple textures for one specific block. I've seen this in a resource pack with multiple textures for mobs, I'm not sure if it will work with blocks though.
**NOTE: This example is not confirmed, but a file search in textures makes this very possible**
For example, (Read Note) for multiple zombie textures, you can have "Zombie.png", "Zombie2.png", "Zombie3.png" and etc...
This example is not confirmed, but if this helped, your welcome
You can randomize block models (but not items) in vanilla 1.8 (and the newest snapshots)
Tutorial here by XSSheep. Default uses random models for rotations, but it can be used for completely random models or what you want, random textures on specific faces (which will still use a model... but it's quite easy for things like ores, especially if you don't care if faces aren't individually randomized.
etc. then just call those from the blockstate file like the tutorial I linked to shows.
Mobs and items still require MCpatcher for randomization.... and it's easier to do random CTM, especially with more randomization of sides.... however it takes a little work, but vanilla support means EVERYONE can benefit from the features of your pack. When the game is updated, those features still work (well, probably... something else might mess up though). And it's just inexcusable to use a mod for something vanilla supports, like yeah MCpatcher supports animations on items and blocks but so does vanilla, so it doesn't really make sense to not use vanilla for that.

It’s the unpleasantness of the system that keeps me out.
I’d rather be in, in a good system. That’s where my discontent comes from:
being forced to choose to stay outside.
My advice: Just keep movin’ straight ahead.
Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."

However MCpatcher does have Custom Item Textures (CIT) which allows retextuing based on name, stack size, damage values, enchantments, etc.
And the 1.9 snapshots have a feature of the model format to allow models (and therefore textures) to have models used based on stack size and damage values.

oh, that's too bad I had multiple sword textures that I wanted to use, like a thick blade or a dagger but I guess we cant all be winners
You COULD technically do this with MCpatcher's CIT, it'd just require you naming a certain type of sword (like iron sword) something like naming it "Buster Sword" or "Iron Dagger" using an anvil and then the texture would be used.

I tried that earlier today but it didn't work, although it may work with items just not blocks, let me see.

CTM allows you to have random textures
Look at this guide by Deonyi: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/resource-packs/resource-pack-discussion/1256361-ctm-a-guide#ran
I don't mean rotating blocks to look different, I mean making 2 or more textures for 1 block.

In that case, the models you make are like this:
{
"parent": "block/cube_all",
"textures": {
"all": "blocks/iron_ore_1"
}
}
{
"parent": "block/cube_all",
"textures": {
"all": "blocks/iron_ore_2"
}
}
etc. then just call those from the blockstate file like the tutorial I linked to shows.

is there any way to use ctm on items?

Not sure. Searching for it all I could find was this guide on how to animate items (not sure how out of date it is): http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/resource-packs/resource-pack-discussion/1256343-a-texture-artists-guide-to-mcpatchers-features (Scroll down to "Custom Item Animations" or press Ctrl + F and search for "Custom Item Animations")
This isn't very relevant, animation is not CTM and vanilla has been able to do animation on items for a while now (no need to use MCpatcher for it).
For random items? No.
However MCpatcher does have Custom Item Textures (CIT) which allows retextuing based on name, stack size, damage values, enchantments, etc.

what kind of randomization do you want for items?
WAIT, what would you do if the block id had a small number at the end like 123(7)!?

is there a simpler guide? this one doesn't make much sense to me and I dont even know where to put the items!
I tried what I thought would work but it showed the normal sword texture,
