I've had the same problem as most of these people, my resource packs won't show in game, and none of these solutions work! So I figured out thatthis template had been working for me rather than the one I was using. Just download the zip, take out the folder in it, and put the folder right in your resource pack folder. It turns out that I was trying to make it an .MCMETA file, but it wouldn't work just renaming it or using notepad. It added an invisible .txt, so I copied and pasted it once or twice. It wouldn't go away. so I had to download an actual .MCMETA file. That worked swell.
Ok I got this new resource pack and I put it in my resource pack folder (had to copy and paste it in when I downloaded it it was its own file) it's in the folder but it's not showing up on minecraft. I have two pack but neither show up please help! Also someone please tell me how to put pics on here cause I took a pic but I'm typing this on my ipad.

I downloaded John Smith Legacy I'm on minecraft version 1.7.9 and I'm useing a windows 8 vista.
What's "Windows 8 Vista"? I'd believe that you're either on Windows 8 or Vista as they're two different operating systems. Or are you talking about two different computers?
Assuming you're on Windows 8, will you try something for me? When you open the Minecraft launcher, click on "Edit Profile" in the bottom left corner. In the dialogue box that opens up, there's a line marked "Game Directory", which should be the second line from the top. By default it's grayed out. Regardless, look at the path shown in that line. Open Explorer and navigate to that folder. There should be a /resourcepacks/ folder there. Open it and tell me if the packs you installed are in there. If they aren't, try copying them to that folder and launching Minecraft as normal.
A lot of people with Windows 8 seem to be having this problem, but they all either fail to fix it or just reply "Fixed. Thx." without telling anyone how they did it... so I'm just shooting in the dark here. Sorry.
Sorry sorry it's just a windows vista not an eight. But I'll still try what you said.
And yeah the pack was there I checked yesterday when I got it but I didn't know how to upload a pick from my ipad. ( i took a pic of my computer showing the folders with my ipad )
Ok I have the pack but now no letters come up they are just little bars. I know there's an older version of this texture pack hypixel uses it for most of his maps and I know that one has texts because lots of people have made YouTube videos of his adventure maps ( skydoesminecraft, Yogscast ) so should I just download john smith instead of john smith legacy?

Both should work if they're for your version of Minecraft. Make sure you're downloading them from the official site and try again. If that doesn't work, back up all of your worlds, delete your .minecraft folder, and try re-installing everything from the launcher. Maybe update Java while you're at it.
Honestly, I don't know how to help you. Sometimes things just don't want to work.
Well I mean I have the pack it woRks fine it's just that any words don't show up they are just |||||||||| but thicker. The pack says 1.7 on the website, the website is the first link if you type in minecraft texture packs in google. I'm on 7.9 might that be the problem? I have another pack it says 1.7 but it works.
I think I found a solution to the problem!
When you go in to the jar folder where your minecraft assets are, there should be a pack.mcmeta folder and a picture file called pack!
If you copy these in the same folder as your assets are then your resource pack should work!
If not I'm afraid I'm all out of ideas!
Exuse me, but i don´t understand what are you trying to say of what to do. Can you explain me, please?
I believe I found one solution of many, and that is that you have to make sure that your .minecraft folder is in the folder Roaming and so on until you reach the My PC folder because when you get in minecraft and select the ´open resource pack folder´ button oppens the .minecraft folder in Roaming! Hope it works for you ´cause it worked for me (because I put the resource packs in the .minecraft folder I copied into my personal folder instead of the .minecraft folder in Roaming. I know, I know, I was a derp. Sorry. *bad poker face*).
So.... Ugh... I've been having this problem for the last week. I've been dying inside. So... Yeah... I'll ask the experts I've read everything here.Most of the problems here are mine. But the Solutions are not quite fitting my problem. I have Windows Vista, And I'm running on 1.8.7, So, At first, My Resource Pack worked. Then. I'm like, Okay, Let's put in some more textures. Now (For an Example) I liked the Oak Wood from the (Not real) Resource pack. I'd drag it over into mine, With of course, I'll ask permission from the author, etc. After that. I loaded put my minecraft. I did nothing differently. And I clicked over my resource pack. And It loads.... And yeah. It just switches back to Default. I asked ______ And they said "Hmph. It's like if it doesn't recognize it" ........ o-o .... Yeah. I didn't touch the pack.mcmeta or any of that stuff. Anyways, Here's what it says in
{ "pack": { "pack_format": 1, "description": "The Awakening by MinorGirl57" } }
Yeah. Um.... I really don't know .... So.... Um.. It my have been caused because of the resource pack is fairly big. Well, Idk. 12.54 Mb. And So, I only have 1Gb of Memory located to my Minecraft, Which I am fixing and transfering 2gb. But for now It will just be 1gb, And so. I deleted a bunch of stuff (With making a copy of it before-hand!) And now It's 9.44 mb. And it still won't run. I really don't know. But when I attempted to switch over the blocks. The whole "Replace & move' Thing showed up. Which means I replaced (For an example) an default sponge with a spooky sponge (XD?) And so, Now It won't work. I already started the map. And I got a lot of progress done. Losing my texture pack (Resource pack) Would be devastating. Please help if you can.
I have seen cases where resource packs do not load because they are too large. Try repacking it, then after that try running the game with the launcher open and see if any errors are reported, that should get you to the root of the problem.
I'm sorry, But, I really don't know much about ResourcePacks, etc. Anyways. i deleted a lot, I really don't know what's wrong with it... What do you mean repacking it? I got a few ideas It's just, I'm alittle confused. So, I just drag the stuff I want into another folder? (Which i will do) Well, If it works//Doesn't work. then, I'll inform you, Thank you for the help!

Edit2: That doesn't work
I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully, someone will come along soon to resolve your problem.
Also, telling us which packs you've tried as well as your Minecraft version and operating system would also be helpful.

Well there's your problem right there. The pack.mcmeta needs to have the appropriate information in it.
In case it hasn't been mentioned earlier in the thread, here's what you need to copy into that file:
I hope that helps you.
when i am push the button "Resources Pack..." and i push button "open resources pack folder" and what the meaning "(
place the resources pack files here)"
"pack": {
"pack_format": 1,
"description": "The Awakening by MinorGirl57"
}
}
