Guys I was wondering how you do this. The photo is a bit messed up but you can see it at least. Title says it all. Here's the photo. Someone gave me a formatting code but I don't know where to code it. Someone reply me please.
You have to change the language files. Go into /assets/minecraft/lang/en_US.lang, and look for the lines that have the text you want to change. Then you can change it with these formatting codes. You should use the unicode value (\u00A7) for the § symbol, as different keyboards type it differently and it may not work normally.
Here's an example:
\u00A74Singleplayer
That would change the "Singleplayer" button text to red. The \u00A7 is the code to start formatting, and the 4 is the code for red. The rest of the colors, plus bold, underlined, etc., are on the article I linked.

No, typing the caracter with your number pad won't work. Java can't handle special characters like that, so you have to use the unicode value. If you don't believe me, look in the language files at languages like Arabic and Hebrew. Since all of those languages are made up of special characters, and the computer can only read characters in the usual ASCII charset, you have to put in the unicode values for everything instead of the actual characters themselves.
Please note that this thread was started before 1.8 was released. Since then, you are required to use §, as they dropped support for \u in the language files.
Thanks in advance.

So the decimal value (0167) won't work?
Putting the CENDENT back in transcendent!

It works for me. This is from the lines gameMode.creative=§3Creative Mode§r and selectWorld.cheats=§5Cheats§r.
Is it possible to colourise names in chat messages?
Adding a colour code before the %s had no visible effect. Colourising the brackets does work, though.
As long as we stand, we will fight!
All I Get Are Question Marks When I Put The § Symbol.
HEEEE
When I Do That, I Just Get "\u00A7aThis Is Green." Instead Of "This Is Green."
OfficialMihro Is Nice
HEEEE
they dropped support for \u. use ", courier, monospace">§ instead of \u and then a bukkit color code.
for example, in your case:
", courier, monospace">§aThis Is Green
