We've been in the process of updating our texture pack for Minecraft 1.6 and we found a mysterious issue. Apparently the rope texture derived from "entity/lead_knot.png" isn't applied to the rope. We double-checked.
What's strange about this is that the rope appears to use another texture file, but doesn't. Having a "lead_rope" would make sense.

Okay, so it turns out the lead has over 400+ bugs, and it's been documented at Mojira. I'm sure we can expect a patch soon-ish. This won't affect anything from a texture dev perspective.
The lead rope texture is hard-coded, there's no way to change it in vanilla Minecraft. There is a way to edit it with MCPatcher, though I haven't looked into that, so I can't tell you how it would be done. But I do know that it's possible.

Would you agree that's a silly oversight? A logical solution would be to have either lead_rope - or just use the existing texture as provided. I'm not sure why it's been done this way. All I can do really is hope for a fix, as it's out of mine (and other texture dev) hands.

Well, seeing as how you also have to use MCPatcher to edit the fishing pole line, and you've had to do that since fishing poles were implemented, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a fix.

I could rant about a lot of things, but one point stands out: Mojang boasts that Minecraft isn't on Steam. To me this is an indication that they don't have to meet certain industry performance standards. This is just another indicator of that. They'd leave it to players to patch their game?
They don't seem to care how that reflects on their professionalism.
Ironic this is about string and rope. The only objects by which our hands are "tied".

You'll find those in the "entity" folder under the name "experience_orb.png".
