Hello there, ElysianCastaic from EC Productions here with a special request for you awesome resource pack artists out there.
I'm looking to get a custom resource pack made for my server, where we build scenery and landscapes for Minecraft animations that I create in Blender, which is a modeling/animating program.
We've been struggling to settle on a resource pack to do the animations in to make it feel that much more immersive. Our server is medieval fantasy, so we all like packs like Dokucraft Dwarven or Conquest. Trouble is, a lot of the textures aren't very good looking in Non-Connected texture mode, which is what I really need.
See, Blender has no way to really read resource packs. It uses what is essentially the lowest settings to just identify the blocks and assign the standard texture to them. And no, I've not found a way to make connected textures a thing without spending several days assigning new textures to each individual block, which is unnecessary and complicated.
So my team and I decided to seek help in making a new pack. I myself have been modeling 3d models for the animations that we'd like to include in the pack itself, but for the blocks, we're looking for something that LOOKS connected and smooth, but doesn't need the connected textures setting activated.
The style we want is kinda a mix of Conquest and Dokucraft. Very Medieval with that nice flair of Fantasy mixed in.
More information can be gathered from me personally via direct contact or replying to this post. Our team has a discord where we hang out daily to discuss server activity and builds, so we could also speak there if faster replies are necessary.
Thank you for reading and hope to hear from some of you.
I'm not sure if you realize this, but resource packs take a lot of time to make. Even if you only want the blocks, the level of quality you're asking for means that a pack will take months to complete even for a good artist. And I'm not talking a few months as a little after-school project, I'm talking months as in "this is my full-time job that I work at 8+ hours a day" kinda months.
And if you're willing to pay for that, then you can count me in! I'd love to have full-time work making a resource pack. I'll even sign on as an independent contractor so you don't have to offer me insurance. I'm sure we can work out an agreement if you're really interested.
But if you're not... this is just a lot to ask for something you want done for free. The skill required to match Conquest and Doku is already a pretty high bar requiring a pretty skilled artist. Most people with that kind of talent would rather spend their non-billable hours working on their own projects or portfolio rather than taking on a second unpaid job. Even if you think you're giving "experience" or "credit" or whatever, it's not anywhere near what someone would get spending the same amount of time working on a professional portfolio. Sorry, but that's the reality of it.
As I said, if you're looking to hire a full-time employee to work on this please let me know. Otherwise, I wish you the best but advise you not the get your hopes up.
As a young man currently stuck on unemployment I don't think I'll ever be able to hire someone for full-time work. I understand how long a resource pack can take to make, as I'm currently making 3d models for such a pack.
If the only way to get help with this project is to hire someone I'd be willing to try and save up the money. Though that would take me some time.
One thing I would like to ask while we have your attention, where would we stand with editing an existing pack to make it custom for the series/server that we are using? We have custome tools, weapons & all manner of other assets in the works right now, so it's NOT a matter of building a pack from scratch... more editing elements into something unique. Colour swaps, texture edit etc. Is this something more reasonable?
I remember you. I used to follow you when you were making resource pack videos. I unsubscribed because you just kinda... stopped. Good to know you're back, though. If you're still making RP videos I might resubscribe.
The short answer to your question is "read the license associated with the pack you want to use." Pack makers usually outline what they are and are not OK with you doing with their work. If you do something that's outside of the license, then that's copyright infringement. Obviously that's something you should avoid doing. And of course if there's no license text then that work is released as "All Rights Reserved" and you absolutely cannot do anything with it without the pack creator's permission.
And if all else fails, ask the pack's creator if they're OK with what you're doing. If the creator is OK with having their work used in your project, then you've probably saved yourself some time. If not, move on to the next pack you might consider editing. Using existing packs will definitely save you some time... if the creators allow you to use their work.
Thank you for the advice!! Considering how badly I got slated for not properly sourcing my Resource Packs on my first few videos I REALLY should have remembered permissions. You've already saved us a lot of problems further down the line! You have my respect!
Oh... and can I review one of your packs sometime? I think I may have downloaded Mint Flavor already.
I believe that both of my packs have a particular part of the license that states I'm OK with people using my packs in videos. Yes, this includes reviews. If you do review one of my packs, feel free to post it in the respective thread. I'll add it to the OP to give your video some extra exposure.
I started using blender a lot myself for texturing and 3d models. I have never done random textures in blender but I know it's possible since I'v read about it before, so you should then easily use either random tiles or a larger tile sheet to break free from the "repetitive" textures. Vanilla minecraft can do random tiles without any mod.
I could maybe texture some stuff, but first and foremost you should go check with conquest and doku (contact them and check their licenses etc) to see if you can't simply build onto their work.
Some of my previous work. It's from my medieval pack which has been on hold for some time.
But to be honest, you guys might be looking for somethign like John smith, I would say that it's in between conquest and doku. Seeing how conquest was based off of it.
Your medieval textures look really good. Some remind me a bit of John Smith. I'd honestly not thought of them much. The issue with Conquest is that even if we heavily edit it to suit our World, can't use our version in Patreon Rewards. I could forgo that, but as we'd like to make the server a public RP server in the future, I'd like to keep that aspect in.
Dante and I are looking into licenses more closely, however, I'd still like to get a custom pack if possible. I don't need random textures and things. I need a pack that looks seamless and connected without the use of connected textures. That if you didn't have optifine everything would still work perfectly with each other.
I'll look into John Smith again and maybe see about contacting it's author, but I'd like to work with someone like you to come up with a new pack if possible.
