Thank you for your help.
sorry for asking so many questions but, where do i get pack.mcmeta?
It's ok, I understand about all of the questions. Everybody does. You do have to start somewhere & must have questions about how everything works before working on it.
You wont find one in the .jar file. You must create one yourself. You can find a section on how to create a pack.mcmeta over here.

Just off the top of my head I didn't see any mention of pack format 2 for texture packs 1.9 and above within the pack.mcmeta Section.
Also couldn't locate the area talking about valid item texture overrides like damage/damaged, time, pulling, or angle.
I forgot about that the pack format 2 option was added in the 1.9 snapshots. Thank you for reminding me. I will add that when 1.9 completely comes out.
What do you mean in the valid item textures? If you can be more specific, I can help more
This is a really great tutorial with excellent explanations. The problem is, I cannot get the texture pack to show up in minecraft after I drop the zip file into the resourcepacks folder. I'm trying to make a simple change. My son wants to play the Ant Farm Survival map with transparent (glass walls). The walls are made of a transparent bedrock (I think the bedrock texture has been replaced with glass). The current AFS texture isn't working with 1.8.9. The bedrock walls show black. The only thing we want to edit is the bedrock, that's it. We would like to replace the bedrock texture with a glass texture, pretty simple copy and paste. I'm using Pixelmator (I'm on a Mac) to edit the texture and saving it back to a PNG file. I'm only including the bedrock and glass texture (I know that I don't need to the glass texture but I forgot to delete it, so there it is). I've edited the pack.mcmeta file and change the description to Ant Farm (otherwise I just copied and pasted your example). Any other suggestions why it might not be showing up?

If that's inside your zip, it's wrong. That top folder ('Ant Farm') does not belong in the zip. Topmost files needed in a zip should be pack.mcmeta and assets folder. This is a common mistake people make, they zip their pack folder instead of the contents of that folder.
If that's a pack folder, the 'Ant Farm' folder should be directly inside of the resourcepacks folder.
Also, something to note: the bedrock block is an opaque block. It isn't intended to have any transparency, depending on the Minecraft version it will either cause the X-ray effect or the game will not allow the transparency to display (replacing it with flat color). If they're showing black, that's probably the cause.

I'm guessing this is a somewhat old map? 1.8. no longer allows transparent textures on blocks that aren't considered transparent by the game. Bedrock is an opaque block, so its texture will always appear fully opaque.
If the map has a LOT of bedrock, it could be a real headache to fix. Easiest solution I can think of is to install MCEdit and use it to replace all bedrock in the map with Barriers, which are meant to be used as invisible walls.

Could someone please point me in the direction of replicating the better grass and leaves/better foliage, using only a resource pack? I know it's possible, as conquest has it, but snooping around in it, I don't quite understand how it works (and I'd rather not just replace all the textures, I like to know why things do what they do). Thank you everyone.
If you mean make it so the side grass on the grass block uses the top grasst grass texture ONLY when there is a grass block below on its side, then it isn't possible via Resource Pack.
You can replicate Better Foliage by making round leave textures & then make either an x or + shape model & put that model into the center of the leave blocks
How do I find the file containing the stairs so I can edit the texture. I can't seem to find it in all of the files.
Stairs inherit the same textures as their block counterparts. You'll have to look around in assets>minecraft>models>block to find the stair's model files and edit them to use a different texture.
Thank you for your help.

Here is a list of them.

Thanks. That explains a lot.
I need to know where the Sunflower head texture is?
All of the names for every block is on the OP under the section "Getting Started" in the spoiler "Blocks".
But to save you the time, the names are
"double_plant_sunflower_back" - the back part of the Sunflower plant
"double_plant_sunflower_front" - the front part of the Sunflower plant
Here's a guide for the Polar bear texture. It is scaled for a 32x texture.

um, when I try to extract my 1.10 jar on mac using archive utility i get a folder with a bunch of .class files.
How do I find the file containing the stairs so I can edit the texture. I can't seem to find it in all of the files.
Search that folder for the 'assets' folder.
Stairs inherit the same textures as their block counterparts. You'll have to look around in assets>minecraft>models>block to find the stair's model files and edit them to use a different texture.
Thank you! This'll be very helpful for me
