In playing Minecraft it annoys me that some materials look radically different in different mods. For instance one mod might add Tin ore that looks blue-gray, which can be turned into red-brown ingots from another mod, and light grey dust introduced by a third mod.
For my Lithos texture packs, I'm using using the exact same color scheme for Tin in all supported mods, and so on for all common materials. To come up with these colors, I've looked at about 20 popular mods, the real appearance of the material, and adjusted colors to make each more easily distinguishable. Other people might reasonably come up with different colors
So it has occurred to me that other texture pack and/or mod makers might want to use these same colors. You are welcome to sample colors from the image below, or if you are familiar to Photoshop's gradient maps, to download the .PSD linked below.
I've made a default-style 16x pack that uses this color scheme. The Unified Ore Colors Pack, which you can download and use under certain conditions.
The top row are ores that appear in the largest number of mods, the lower row appear in only one or a few mods.
What about glowstone ingots and things rom Mekanism?
Gah, you are right, i should have Glowstone. That is going to be hard to make distinct.
As for Mekanism, it is likely that I will add more materials from other mods in the future. I'm primarily interested in the materials from the most popular mods, and/or the materials that most commonly appear in many mods.
Mekanism is a common mod and it is often replacing IC2 for many. I would add it in. Been wanting to re-do my ores anyho and this gives me a good excuse to do it XD
I should make an Ores-only pack for Sanity. An add-on pack that adds just the ores, block, and ingots for materials like these from popular mods. It would be a nice step towards making Sanity more useful to modded Minecraft while avoiding the responsibility of having to do a billion Minecrafts worth of mod textures!
I don't suppose you have a convenient list of mods that would use these textures?
Osmium is Mekanism's primary ore to make it's machines. It's not used in any other mods aside add-ons. But it is accepted in other mods machines and as said, it is quickly becoming a replacement for many for IC2.

Though even without this, i didn't feel much responsibility to completely retexture most mods. I'm interested in changing the things that clash with Lithos, like an ore with a vanilla background. But something like Mekanism or IC2 numerously little processing machine cube could actually make things more confusing for the player if i changed them.
Thanks

I know what you mean. I've kinda wanted to do this for Sanity as well, and this post really sparked the idea of doing a dedicated ore pack since ores are the most common offenders.
As i add more materials, i'd like the most distinctive colors to go to the most common ores. More data on what mods use what materials would help identify the common materials.
I could put the spreadsheet up on google docs and open access to it if there was interest in adding the material information from other mods.

Don't forget wood and trees.
Glendale already has an add-on for modded trees (just not releaced yet) and ores are on the way. I'd like to think that having support at least for the world gen part of mods is a good thing as that's what you will see default in the game, with out crafting or what not. Along with the more common building items like wood just ties everything in nicely.
Here's a different set-up and a sneak peek at the BoP gem colors.
My impression is that "Peridot" and "green sapphire", refer to the same material in the Ore Dictionary. Can someone confirm that? I'm primarily thinking of RedPower, Project Red and Biomes O Plenty.
I might include this in my new updated WIP Texturing Guide page (a WIP updated Texturing Guide, which was original by Steelfeathers). Do you mind if I include this (as an Advanced Texturing Topic) in my Texturing Guide? (You will be credited of course & have a link provided back to this page)
Is the name clear for everyone? I'm also considering "Standardized Ore Color Scheme". Other ideas?
I'm not going to ask for a link-back or specific attribution, but I do think i would be valuable to if users of this scheme mentioned that they are using it. Once it was known the end-user could consider it a valuable feature, not only that the ore colors were consistent across mods, but that they are the same as other packs he's used.

This is a really nice guide Eleazaar! Keep it up!

You sir are a gentleman and a scholar. Thank you!

Ok, thanks. I'll add this to the Advanced Texturing Topics when I get to that part.
Think you should include emeralds as well.
