Is there a way for me to put a video in the blocks? Like for example on what I meant a video from youtube and put it on blocks. Do I have to get each frame or is there an easier way? I'm not trying to be lazy I'm just asking if there is.
To do this with vanilla animations you'd have to not only download the video and render it as frames, but you'd also have to re-render it at 20fps (because that's as fast as an animation in Minecraft can go), and in perfectly square frames, and at a resolution that's a perfect square of 512x512 or less... and even then it is VERY likely that you'll just crash Minecraft with anything longer than a 30 second clip. Minecraft was not made to do video with its block animations.
So no, there's no easy or even good way to do this. It'd be a lot of work for a very poor return.
There used to be a mod for watching Youtube from within Minecraft. It might be worth it to you to track it down and see if it's still up to date. Best wishes.
Disassemble it into frames and then follow the tutorial. How exactly you do that first step depends on the software that you have available to you, and I can't really help you with that.

Actually, MrCrayfish made a utility for assembling GIFs into animated textures.

MCreator is just for whiny people who can't get ForgeGradle set up properly.
I have a problem. The animated texture works, however it also scrolls through the entire animation. It's a 32x32 texture. What can I do to counter this?
From the very vague description I'm going to guess that you frames are not perfectly square, which is what's causing the scrolling effect. Make sure that the width and height of each and every frame are all equal and the problem should be corrected.
If not, well, then please post details. Post your animation strip and .mcmeta file so that we can see what you've done rather than guessing what mistake you made.
Would this be possible to be used in an Elytra? When I try it, It just shows all the frames stretched together, even though I've put the .mcmeta file.
Vanilla's animation system only work on blocks and items (won't work on anything else, even if it's perfectly square).
For Elytra you'd probably have to use an animation using Optifine (MC-patcher's animation format that pipes an animation onto a different image) since Optifine has been released for 1.9.

Your indices are shifted 1. They should be from 0-60, not 1-61. This was also mentioned in the tutorial.
Kwerti is correct, though more accurately you're one frame over the end of the strip. You have frame #0, but you also have Frame #61 which doesn't exist. Removing the reference to Frame 61 should fix the issue. If not, please post your updated .png.mcmeta file and I'll check if there are any other problems.
Hello, I'm having considerable difficulty animating diamond armor models. Is there any way for me to animate it without using MCPatcher, and if not, how would I do so?
The .mcmetas are written exactly as they should be, but I don't know if it's at all possible to use vanilla animation with armor models.

Use Optifine instead. It's the exact same method.
But if you're asking if there's a way to do this in vanilla... no. There is not.

So I've come a little way since I last posted, but I'm still pretty much clueless as to what I'm doing. I've created an anim folder, which contains the pngs, but I have no idea what to write in the properties files. I've gutted them from another animation and they seem not to work. Here's a mediafire link to a zipped file containing the anim folder I'm using.
Side question - when animating the armor, should I remove the retextured diamond_layers from textures/models/armor/, and have them only contained in anim?

By the way, thanks for the quick response.
Sorry, but this is the thread for the vanilla animation method. I suggest posting a thread of your own in Resource Pack Help, or making a post on the MCpatcher thread. Sorry for being curt, but I do ask that discussion remain on topic... both because it's easier for people reading the thread and because those are the forum rules.
Minecraft 1.9+ changed clocks and compasses. Instead of a big 'strip' of textures and a .mcmeta, you need separate .png files for each frame. There's a script somewhere on the forums to change the 1.8 clock and compasses to the 1.9 version.

Yea, I need to make a 1.9+ version of this tutorial that includes things like the changes to the clock and compass and item durability textures. I haven't done so mainly because I'm busy with other things. Hopefully I can be forgiven for that.

There's actually multiple, one of them being mine which is actually on the previous page.

HehYeah Boyy !
how do you get a video or a gif into a texture???

I was thinking the same thing too. But MrCrayFish did something about that.

OK... so... what do you want me to do about it?
If you'd like help, post your animation strip and .png.mcmeta file here. Imgur and pastebin are your friends for accomplishing this.
Otherwise... uh... you have my sympathies for having this problem. Because that's all I can give you without some details to work from.
