The 1.6 update threw me for a HUGE loop. Take that with everything else that was going on irl, and I couldn't work on my pack. Now that I am(in 1.7) I am in new territory. I have two questions:
1) Can all of the textures be animated? or only the items/blocks folder. For example: the mp folder has the map icons and the backround. can those be animated.
Only blocks and items using the vanilla animation system. For everything else, MCPatcher must be used.
2) Is there anyway to make more than one animation for a block, and have the game choose it randomly. Or am I still going to have to rely on MCPatcher or Optifine to do that.
Not in vanilla, no. For that you'll need MCPatcher. I'm not sure if Optifine does random.
That reply was crazy fast...but I cannot say I'm surprised as to the answer...*sigh* alas, I shall have to flee to the depths of the mod realm again to appease my audience.... Thank you kind sir!

No problem. It's Sunday afternoon so I'm just quietly doing art here on my computer. I have the forum up pretty much all the time.
And yea, I think Resource Pack fans are pretty much used to needing MCPatcher for, like, EVERY pack ever.
I don't want to advertise, but I feel that this is a good example of what can be done with animations.
It certainly looks nice, but if you think about it it doesn't really work. You COULD place that record in the juke whenever, not just when the sheeps mouth is open. But ye, it looks nice.
Now that I think about it, I'm not too certain what to do with my juke, as nothing would be happening all the time with it...

*shrug*
You could put the disk in while it's closed, that would be inhumane and painful!
so i wanted to make the stick in minecraft look like a wand (don't ask why, it's a long story) and i wanted to animate it so that the gem (because all good wands have a gem) changes colour over time. i made the animation strip, which is 50 frames long and more work than i want to let go to waste, but i can't get the .mcmeta to work. i did everything you said. i didn't want to do anything complex, it's just this: { "animation": { "frametime": 4 } }
i made it a plain text file, saved in the correct area, and changed the extension to .mcmeta, but when i tried it ingame i got the checkerboard. can someone help me?

The main thing that comes to mind is that you didn't get the file name right. Remember that it should be "stick.png.mcmeta", and that everything has to be spelled correctly.
If you're absolutely certain that you've done this correctly, consider uploading your packs somewhere for me to check. It's better than trying to play "guess your mistake" over the forums. If you don't want to make it public yet, send it to me in a PM.

i'm almost certain i've done it right, but i can't distribute the pack, as it's an edited version of someone else's pack. i'll send you the stick.png and the stick.png.mcmeta and we'll see if you can spot what i've done wrong

I received it and sent you a reply. The problem is that you have an extra extension in your file name. It's currently "pack.png.mcmeta.txt". That final .txt needs to be removed before it has any hope of working.
I hope that helps you.
Also, good for your for recognizing that you shouldn't distribute other people's content. to you sir.

i worked out how to fix it by consulting apple help. select the .png.mcmeta.txt file, go into file in the toolbar, and click 'get info'
from there, you can truly delete the .txt extension, and that will make it work. i'm glad you told me what the problem was, or i would never have been able to fix it myself. this is a problem for all OSX users, so add it to the OP to help other ppl like me.

Consider it done. Thank you so much for posting an answer to this problem!
Edit: I gave you credit and put a snapback to your post. Thanks again!

The syntax is really fiddly, but I did something similar and got it working. I'll post the mcmeta when I get home. Whenever you can't get these things to work, I recommend getting someone else's and editing it to your needs because there aren't any in-depth tutorials for this sort of thing.
This is just a random interjection, but if you have the same frame at the beginning and end of the list, like you have there, it's going to hang for twice as long as it should. When it reaches the end of the list, it goes back to the beginning, so it's going to show frame 0 twice.

and it doesn't do what i asked for, and i fixed my problem anyways, with the help of alvoria. i really don't get why he even posted anything

Because it does actually do what you wanted it to do and exactly what you described. Tiles 0-7 (or in your case 0-49) are the same image but with a slightly different hue, so the effect is that it gradually changes over time and with a frame time of 10 so very slow. I think you're being rude when you say 'I don't know why he even posted anything', which saddens me because I said I'd help, I've given you my own resources, and this is basically a complete mcmeta file that does what you're looking for, free for you to repurpose for your needs.

OK, I'm going to stop you right here. The problem was with the file extension, not the contents of the .mcmeta file. Read my previous post in this thread, and the two posts previous to that. Not only was your solution to an entirely different problem, but the problem had already been solved before you posted.
It's not rude to point this out, it's simply a fact of how this thread has progressed. Sorry about that.
We all thank you and appreciate that you're trying to be helpful. I hope you'll continue to post on this thread and help people who are having difficulties. But please, make sure to read the entire conversation before you post, OK? It'll save you from having these difficulties in the future.
