Why is Mojang so bloody in love with using superimposed colors on everything. Seriously. I'm expecting one update that all of the texture files will just be monochrome with hard-coded colors everywhere for every block and item no matter what!
Sorry. No, I'm not serious. I'm just venting my frustration at Mojang ruining my unique not-green sugar cane.
Anyway, I think the sugar cane uses the grass's color map. Not 100% sure on that, though.
yes sugar cane uses the grass color map, I have found blue sugar cane in my ice plains biomes which has blue grass and black sugar cane elsewhere because I use Misa's template and because of the new snapshot's colour behaviour.
Fortunately my color choices filter out some of the blue or I'd be having this problem with this in any water-heavy biome.
Interesting. I have my color map all figured out (mostly on the gray- turquoise range), but I'm pretty sure it's imposing the default color map colors on top of my grass & foliage files anyway. For example, I'll go into a swamp or a mesa plateau and there's this puke-brown overlay. And the grass in the roofed forest is bright green.
Dumb question, would it be possible to make certain areas of metallic "grass" look rusty or weathered?
Personally i consider this a partial reversion to the superior way the colormap used to work--- in 1.4 IIRC. You could get variagated grass if you wanted it, which IMHO looks very much nicer, at least with many styles of pack.

I haven't checked all biomes, but the swamp certainly totally ignores the colormap (as i've previously mentioned)-- it's not an overlay. I believe the 2 swamp grass colors are hard-coded, not drawn from the default colormap.
I've tested. Roofed forest obeys the colormap. You are right about the grass on top of the mesa plateaus-- it totally ignores the colormap.
That's why i stopped playing with it for now - i bet it will not stay like this.
I can't feel confident about that. Mojang has had hard-coded colors influencing the swamp biomes for a long time, for no particular reason (presumably whoever decided that swamps needed to be darker didn't want to figure out the colormap).
]Yes, i also noticed that the "biome subcoloring" follows the long side of the triangle. The interpolation confuses me a lot... i have some experience from when i figured out the colormap spots for Biomes O' Plenty, but this now... will be interesting to decipher.
..care to share where the colors are? also can you check for the spots in extrabiomesxl? *puppy dog eyes*
So all and all, has anyone started on a template that shows this on the grasscolor sheet? I think if someone started on that we'd get a better idea... as reading through all this, I'm still confused about it... where on the sheet would I place my pixels of color to make this work?
I'm just venting my frustration at Mojang ruining my unique not-green sugar cane.
I'm not-so-happy about the biome-changed sugarcane either, and my sugarcane is green. It often darkens them and makes them look weird, and/or the highlights on them look weird due to having lower saturation, because of how coloring actually mixes with colors.
Seriously, this is just a silly change >_>

I agree... the change to sugercane is a little odd... I wouldn't have minded so much if the color change was there but much more subtle.. my cane has tan stalks with green leaves.... now it's just....
.....ew.....
A subtle tint, may look nice.. but not BAM color! @.x
Also for some reason my water is no longer transparent.... the file has it, it still is, but in game its not.. and also looks rather ugly.. hope thats a bug @.x

If youre on fast graphics all transparent blocks (ice, water, portal, leaves) turn solid.

That's only on "fast" graphics, and yes it is a bug. Jeb is working to fix it.
I don't have the new locations for all the new biomes, but many seems to reuse the locations from old biomes. Hopefully that will change.
Jungle and Jungle Edge are different from the templates i've seen before.
As elevation increases the point on the map that MC samples moves down those streaks to the bottom right corner. The point randomly wobbles a bit from side to side-- the width is approximate, but pretty close. That's what produces the nice variegated colors.
If you want variation like my previous screenshot, add some noise to your texturemap map.
...also can you check for the spots in extrabiomesxl? *puppy dog eyes*
Why? Extrabiomes doesn't work with the snapshot, and won't work with 1.7 for a very long time. It is likely that they will make changes in response to the new changes that have come and will come in 1.7.
So that's how the color map's are working now. So the higher we go the colder it gets. They don't need to move the colder biomes spots, as thats as cold as you can get, no color change needed.
Do you have an idea as to how far along those lines the biomes will use? The whole length or just a part of it?
It does travel the whole length of the line.
Experimenting with my color map doing gradients from the biomes color to my arctics color... rainbows.....
Reached max world height.
Looks like at 186 or so height it just continues to use the 'coldest' color.
Above that point all the grass blocks are the same color.
Same for going below part 62, at that point it stays at the default biome color.
So now I have a color sheet that looks like this
The only issue I seen thus far, is near the coldest colors kinda passing over one another. and making me think of switching jungle and forest colors...

*facepalm* because I am making a FTB support for my pack and that's the big thing I am struggling on locating, unless I want every biome to be the same default OMG UGLY GREEN that's the 'filler' to my default color map... but thanks >.>

Thanks for checking on that Malcolm.

It would be great if they could make some changes, or at least just explain flat-out how the color maps work.
I can't feel confident about that. Mojang has had hard-coded colors influencing the swamp biomes for a long time, for no particular reason (presumably whoever decided that swamps needed to be darker didn't want to figure out the colormap).
If you want colormaps to control all biome colors, please vote this bug report up on Mojira.

That's certainly desirable, but it is more clearly a feature-request which are not welcome on the bug-tracker.

Woah, that grass sure is funky...I quite like the rainbow altitude thing...
