Your tutorial is flawed. NEVER EVER -EVER- replace the files that are in the minecraft.jar. ALWAYS make the new files into a texturepack. Elsewise you can muck things up and some files can appear screwed up badly by editing them, resulting in blank blocks and what not. We just had to resolve an issue with another user whos graphics were screwing up/not working, because he placed them into the jar and not as a texture pack.
On top of that, there is already a section of the guide that tells you how to properly pull the files from the minecraft.jar, and properly repack them as a texture pack. Because of that, and the fact you're telling people to place their textures in the jar, over writing the default textures, I highly doubt it would get approved.
I appreciate the feedback and constructive criticism. As with all things Minecraft, it probably is flawed along with my tutorial as I am coming from this standpoint:
Former Minecraft dev/modder who has returned
Working with version 1.4.7 (default/external texture packs), and even the core code
The minecraft.jar file is transient and 80% of all Minecraft problems are resolved by clearing this from Application Data. What I am trying to do is give an outside approach to working on one's on localized Minecraft install. I.E., not XBOX 360, etc.
I did paste a huge disclaimer for all viewers:

I have not had a chance to break out into Texture Packs with Editing Programs: that was a starting point.
However, based on your Membership Level, my recent return to a game I loved tooling around with a few years ago, and in general... your lack of offering a solution/doc that this community has sought since 2011... I will delete my post, gladly and in kind, to leave your retort only as a helpful tip to other people.
I need some big help on my texture pack. mainly the grass block. (before you call me a noob and stuff, here me out)
if you look at the terrain.ping. if you look at the side grass block, there is dirt and green grass at the top. (in the chart at the op, it's 03)
and there is a place ware it's the grass, but there is no dirt and the grass is gray. (in the chart at the op, it's 26)
So when you texture the gray thing, that's the shade and style of the side of grass. but the one with the dirt is the dirt part and what the block looks like in your inventory. But I have trouble making the texture of the block is the same as the item in your inventory. and I was asking if any one had any ideas for help. thank you for reading this.
Not sure I grasp what you are saying.
The block with the colored grass (thats next to the dirt) is the block used if you have fast graphics on, to cut back on lag.
The grayscale side grass stays gray so biome coloring can be added, this is used when fancy graphics are turned on.
The held block also is set to use a default color from the biome coloring.

this is what i mean: the gray grass texture is the shape of what the grass will look like, and the grass side block is what the icon will look like in your inventory. i was asking for help on making the grass in-game look the same as the grass side block.
Exactly, But how do I make the grass side block look like the green grass in-game so it will look the same?
Sorry for the delay. Kinda took a break from this forum due to personal reasons.
So, you encountered the same darn problem I did ?? The GRASS doesn't match everything else, right?
What version of Minecraft are you working with? I ask, because some of this is taken care of in the code for older versions... BUT, there is also an external file you can edit!
Lemme know what version you are running and I'll tell you how I did my best to fix my textures!

Can you upload a copy of your terrain.png? Also, consider these two files under /misc:
grasscolor.png and foliagecolor.png
These files are references for different colors used for grass and leave "hues". There is also some code (yes code) for this, depending on what version you are running.
So, again -- lemme know what version of MineCraft you are running and building out texture packs for.
See? Held items use whatever color you have set on the biome pallet as a 'general' color for grass when held.
that is exactly what i mean! boy, when people say the simple blocks are easy to texture, they haven't tried the grass block. anywho my file:
Heres my problem. you don't texture the grass green, so how do I make the other one look the same color?

I can't understand what you're saying, but if you want your grass to be all one color make the grasscolor.png all white, and put the green in the terrain.png

Ok. here we go again: there's texture were it's the side of the grass block. dirt and green grass. (it's gray for my pic when I was testing something) and, there is just gray grass with no dirt. the grass with no dirt is what the shape and shade of the grass block in-game will look like with the fancy graphics. the gray grass with dirt under it is what the block looks like when your holding it in-game or with fast graphics. and my problem: how do I make the grass on the ground, in-game with fancy graphics look like the side grass block with the dirt.
Okay you are really making it hard to grasp what you are asking about, in game screenshots maybe to better point out what your issue is?
For the most part, the side grass with the dirt (3rd block on the top) will always look like that, as it's designed for when fancy graphics is turned off, whatever color you make it be, is what color it will be in game flat out. theres no changing it to match the biomes.
The graysacale side grass, the one under the iron block, when fancy graphics is turned on, will be overlayed over top the normal side grass and have biome coloring applied to it, so the side grass will change color depending on what biome your in.
My pack for example:
Fancy turned off it uses the default side grass
With fancy on however:
The grayscale under the iron block is now overlayed over it, and biome coloring applied.
So really what is your issue?
Do you want the grass to ALWAYS look like how it does with fancy turned off? Just the normal unchanging no biome tint color or what?

what I meant is I wanted to make fast look similar to fancy. sorry if i was not saying right and now that I look at it, why didn't I say that at first? anywho, when ever I try to make it look similar, it just looks funny. I mean, when you look at your pics, you can see that your fast has the same texture to it. it just looks brighter. That's what i was trying to say. ( sorry steelfeathers for spaming on your topic but I thought that since you have a lot of texturing skills, I thought you could help)
So you want fancy textures, to look the same as fast then?
Well then you'd have to do what fish said, as it's the only way.
Fancy graphics will alwaysoverlay whatever color you have set in the grasscolor.png a.k.a the biome coloring, Even if you changed and colored the grayscale grass, it would just overlay the biome coloring on top of that.
The only way to make them look the same is to throw out biome coloring all together, make the grasscolor.png all white, and make the grayscale top and side grass the shade of green you want. Then and only then will fast and fancy be the same, but you will have no biome coloring, all the grass everywhere will look the same.

I don't want all of the biomes be one shade of grass though, what I mean is for you, it just isn't the same shade, but it still looks similar. and I would like to know how I could make it look similar like that.
sorry for all of the trouble by the way, I don't mean to have none-stop problems, but things like these keep happening to me.

That is because 'held' grass uses it's own color on the biome color sheet.
