This is an amazing guide for GUI textures! It's perfect in every way and covers literally everything. I even learned a couple of things, one which surprised me most was how the Mojang logo bases the background off of that 1 pixel in the corner. Never knew that.
When people need extra help with the GUI, I know what GUIde I'll be sending them to ;3

Yeah, I just thought when doing that section, "hmm, the image isn't that wide, so where does that colour come from? is it always white?" I had to find out a lot of things like that.
I'm flattered, by the way. Thanks so much! any chance of a sticky?
Absolutely amazing. I have a high standard for tutorial threads, and this one impresses even me. You have concise information, good templates, visual examples of everything, and even seem to have found a few secrets that aren't common knowledge! Very good.
The one thing that I would like to see, though, is some spoilers to shrink it down a bit. That post is literally so long it breaks the forum's background. An impressive feat, but one that makes your tutorial seem longer and more intimidating than it really is. Just a suggestion.
Again, great work. I've bookmarked this, and I'll direct any questions I see about GUI editing here!

I have your animation tutorial open right now
I would appreciate that! I'm happy to answer any questions, even if it's via something I already wrote.
And yeah, you could be right >.> I find it takes quite a bit to scroll to the bottom of the thread to read replies The table of contents is supposed to have links to all the different sections (you wouldn't happen to know how anchors on this forum work would you?), but I spent such a long time editing the thing to get it posted that I'm a bit burnt out at the moment. I promise I'll make it happen soon, though.
Thanks a lot, very useful - finally i REALLY know how the hearts work.
By the way, you wrote:

Really, in 1.5? I thought my book was always 256 x 256 px...
Well, the last time I wrote the GUIde, which was in 1.4, books were about 180x210 or something like that. I tried using one of my reference images from the last time around and everything was in the wrong place, so it definitely changed at one point, though it may have been before 1.5.

Probably what you came here for.
Not only a Genius, but a Psychic as well!
Even though google sent me here (indirectly) to find out more about icons.png, I must admit to reading (AND ENJOYING!) this wonderful GUIde of the new resource packs in its entirety. Well done!
and beautiful work on the spoilers. They break the sections/files down nicely IMO.
To make a proper panorama, however, I imagine you would need to do something like start Minecraft at a small resolution – a square one, importantly, which you can do with the new launcher. Then use f3 to find your facing, and MouseKeys to move your cursor to each of the cardinal points (north, south, east, west), and then up and down, and take a screenshot at each.
Myself, I tried that method twice, and I couldn’t get it to work. I’m not sure if it could work… Anyway, I can’t really fill in this portion of the GUIde, so if anyone does know and could tell me that’d be great.
To do this, use a square window with an fov of 83. This makes it so that the edges of the images line up exactly.

Hey, that's great! I'm glad you enjoyed it! And yes, I did realise that would be the image most people needed help with (well, in my eyes it would).
I put in those spoilers before I left a little while ago, and I do think they work well.
It was written just recently, after the 1.6 release. So yea, it's all current.
Ex-actly.
I've done the panorama thing (the method without the mod). The mod, incidentally, didn't work for me, but it seems to work for others, so I need to reinstall it... Anyway I've been out a lot (:D) so haven't got a chance to write that bit yet.
This is great! Learned a few things, found one small mistake:
You cannot edit the placement, colour, or anything else about the text on GUI screens, except for what way the font looks, by editing the font itself. At least, not with a resource pack.

In fact, you can edit the text, with lang files.
I'm glad you learned stuff. That's the idea, after all! And yes, you're right - I had forgotten that. I'll put it in later today! Thanks for mentioning it.

I hope updates are worth a double-post :S Anyway, I updated the panorama section as I've been meaning to do, and added the bit about language files, so thanks to the posters who suggested those additions!

Neither did I, until I did this. Glad I could help!
I certainly hope so!

It was a stroke of genius, I must admit.
Awesome tutorial and will make many lives easier and stop a lot of hair pulling

Putting the CENDENT back in transcendent!
Maybe you should add that to your GUIde, Cycloneblaze.

Great feedback
I'll have to try both methods. Thanks for pointing it out, guys, I was a bit annoyed that I couldn't get it to work myself.
Thanks!
