So, with the advent of resource packs, I've discovered we can edit the default language files and put them in our texture packs. So, this gave me a great idea! ..but it doesn't seem to work.
Color formatting! Imagine if you could color code all the various text in your texture packs using the § color tags? (Menu buttons, etc) and possibly even color code the item text in game so you could make all types of certain items a certain color? (For example, food = green, ore = blue)
Well, that all seems like a great idea now that we can edit language files, right? There's only one problem. You can't seem to use the color codes directly in the language file!
Has anyone figured out a way to do it, or are we just out of luck? You *can* use color codes in the Splash text (I added a few in my pack for fun). But sadly, you can't seem to do it to any of the .lang file text.
Other cool random tidbit: This also means we could add custom languages to our packs if we wanted to for some reason.
Figured this out while messing with language in my resource pack:
No more hardcoded "crafting" text in the inventory gui! YES!
Also, colors work:
So it at least already works for that.
I'm pretty sure you just add it in the same way as you did for the splash screen, they're both just plain text.
On the last part, I've already modified en_US.lang with small little changes to the language. Nothing too drastic, pretty sure lots of artists probably have, too.
EDIT:
tile.dirt.name=§3Dirt
Yup, works. You're doing something wrong. Do you have the files proper (working language)? Are you using 1.6.1, because languages didn't load before that.

Erm.... why can't you use colors in the language file? Goodlyay has already mentioned this whole topic and it worked:

Wha? that's exactly what I was doing.. I even C/P'ed the silly swiggly S thing just to be sure.
I was JUST about to say this....
With [?] it was clear that there was a format issue that was not saving the symbol correctly.
Also, you can use plain old notepad as well.
So do you just have to add those §2 §3 things in the beginning of the name? Or how does that coloured | work? I'm just confuzzled and tired, so sorry for theses stupid questions.
It's Minecraft's internal system of font codes.
When it sees § it looks at the symbol after it to see what to do following that. You can use the codes to stylize text, and then
§r to reset it (or, in the case of colors, another color code will work, too).

Yeah, in Notepad++ it wont show the "?" it still shows the symbol, soon as I flicked it over to UTF-8 the ? popped up and I realized what was going on.
I'm just bumping this topic to say that I'm having my own problems with this. While I don't have Notepad++, my files were being saved with the ANSI encoding, and my custom colours weren't working. However, changing the encoding to anything else not only fails to solve the problem, but also turns the font into this ugly monster:
Any ideas what I should do?
Download Notepad++ and save in UTF-8 would be my solution. I'm fairly certain it has to be UTF-8.
As to the funny font, it has something to do with unicode and non-unicode characters. Some of the very non-English languages use that font because they contain characters not available to regular text encoding (God knows why Pirate Speak uses that font, though).

Hrm.
menu.singleplayer=Singleplayer
menu.multiplayer=Multiplayer
To:
menu.singleplayer=§2Singleplayer
menu.multiplayer=§2Multiplayer
in en_US.lang
results in...
:/
I use Notepad++, and it saves in ANSI format by default. I switched it to UTF-8, works like a champ now.

I'm making a resource pack for a server that has colored items *candy*
i need to add a bio to some items, is that possible?
*the one with the bio is custom, the one without is from the resource pack*
No, item desc. are stored in the item's NBT data, which can't be edited by RP.
