Is there a way to switch between the default texture and any other ones you download? I am wanting to install one, but not if it kills the original. Any help?

Did you add the pack to the texturepacks folder, or did you open up the minecraft.jar and dump the textures there? If the later, thats a nono, never do that.

Start Minecraft, but before you log in, go to "options" and click "force update." This will get rid of the texture pack. Now you can go back and put the texture pack in the proper folder.
Alrighty, so this is the problem I am having, too. It's the bordercraft texturepack that won't go away for me, I've tried everything. I checked all folders in the minecraft.jar and it's not in there anymore, I deleted the bordercraft download completely, checked texturepacks folder, and yet still when I click on the "Default" texture in the main game it still is the Bordercraft texturepack. Any ideas on what to do?
*sigh*
Either force update your game or delete your .jar file.
Then open the "texturepacks" folder (it's named texturepacks for a reason!) then drag the texture pack zip/folder in there.

Delete your entire bin folder.
It will get rid of any mods you have installed, but it should fix the problem you're having.

-DO NOT- open your mineceaft.jar and add textures from packs into it. Thats replacing the defaults and can end up screwing things up.
To install packs just place the zip, -do not unpack it-, into the TEXTUREPACK folder. Then you can switch packs by clicking the TEXTUREPACK button in game.
Making minecraft force update, or deleteing the minecraft.jar will force it to download a new jar, that is clean and free ofall mods and edits.

Heheh, I remember when we had to do that.
When there was still a tutorial button.
