Here's an effort to clarify my issues with Mediafire, the reasons for my posting those concerns in this sub-forum and my utter disrespect for those that suggest preventative measures on my part in order to avoid the undesirable actions on Mediafire's part.
Mediafire provides a download service that host's content for free and earns revenue by selling advertisement placement on the page that is viewed in order to download those files. I have NO issues with that.
Mediafire does not prevent their advertisers from including code that performs actions on Mediafire's users browsers. That crosses the line into selling me out to their ACTUAL clients the ADVERTISERS. This makes them adversarial to their individual users. If they are willing to allow their advertising partners to push aggressive code to me I cannot assume that they will be persistent and thorough in preventing malicious code being pushed to me.
I choose not to support that business model for the same reason I do not buy iPods with small blood spatters on the back from street thugs.
I posted this in this forum because IT IS PERTINENT TO THIS FORUM.
I am repulsed and disheartened to see that continual abuse by advertisers, websites and other businesses on the internet has produced a group of users that accept without question malevolent business practices as normal and acceptable. That you have decided to criticize me for my failure to armor myself against those that incorporate unethical behavior into their business model rather than the unethical business itself makes me fear for future generations. This acceptance of unethical behavior, so long as you yourself are protected from it in some way, is itself unethical in my opinion.
And besides all of that there is a simple, undeniable and obvious internet truth here that you seem to fail to see.
Direct links are better than redirects.
If your host will not provide direct links and, instead, forces you to send your user to them then that reflects on you. You chose that host. You think that is acceptable. You either cannot discern that this is undesirable to your user or you simply do not care about the experience that your user has. In fact, you are complicit in the unethical practices and are benefiting from them ( you gain the free hosting at the users expense ). You are the root of the unethical business' business model.
I care about the experience that I provide to others. I do not with to expose others to potential harm or to unethical businesses in order to gain a benefit myself. There are MANY free, fast and ethical methods to host files. Why would you choose to support those that are ugly, unethical and inconvenient? I can't comprehend it.
In conclusion, I choose to do business with ethical businesses, to support what I want to see more of and not to support that which I do not want to see more of. It costs nothing to use better hosts and it makes you appear more savvy, more caring and more intelligent. Why not take just a moment to consider that what you have been doing out of habit may not be the very best option available and consider alternatives?
Thanks for all of your opinions so far and I hope that I have at least expressed myself more clearly that I did in my original post. It was written in anger and frustration and that was unwise. It was hostile and unnecessarily aggressive and that was unwarranted. I apologize for the delivery, but not the message.
Just boot up Linux inside Virtualbox and access it using Firefox with NoScript, FlashBlock and AdBlock, then restore the VM to a previous state when done.
I actually do this when I need to go to certain sites.

I don't get what's wrong with Mediafire. Sure there's a few ads and all that but jesus, you're blowing this out of proportion... I've never had any problems with Mediafire and it happens to be one of my favorite hosting sites.

I only posted one comment and then days later replied once. Not really trying to make a huge deal of this. I'm hesitantly posting this reply because I don't want to beat what I feel is a dead horse. Dead to me anyway.
EDIT: I'm completely wrong. I posted other replies earlier. Sorry, it's been a long Holiday and I drove 14+ hours yesterday.
Can you tell me why you like Mediafire? It's just a file host. It doesn't offer any benefit that others don't unless you compare it to horrible ones that are far worse. Do you run software that limits and controls MF's attempts to spawn windows etc, or do you not mind those behaviors?
How does MF best Dropbox for example or cloudapp or any other free file hosts that do allow you to link directly to your downloads?

I can't tell if you're both being serious or not. I'm really really hoping that you're both pulling my leg. If you're not then I'm absolutely stunned. Stockholm syndrome much? Maybe, and that's a really big maybe, I would be bothered to do something like this if there was no other place on the entire internet to access something that would literally change my life. Say something like actual real-life HD cell phone footage of leprechaun and unicorn porn being watched aboard a UFO by Obama and Buddha; while they are served drinks by a naked Scandinavian girls roller derby team.
You have blown right past drama queen status and gone straight to raving on the streetcorner with a big sign. Wow. Even when you apologize, you still rant at us.
Let's try something.
Hi guys. I have a concern about Mediafire, and it's very relevant since so many people here use that site. You see, Mediafire uses unethical business practices, such as... (list)
Here's a solution! I propose we use other file-sharing sites with more ethical practices; sites like... (list)
I bet that would have worked a lot better for your purpose.

Yeah... Mediafire is ridiculous. At least 4 times, I've been sent to a page that *may* have had less than wholesome content(Never really looked, because the page was spamming my browser with popups and not letting me leave the page, which naturally made me more worried than something else) while trying to download a texture pack/mod for minecraft. Honestly, it's not that bad all you have to do is ctrl + alt + delete and end process on your browser, but I use google chrome which doesn't automatically reload shut down pages like firefox does ;.;
I'll still use a mod/texture pack that was uploaded on mediafire if I want it more than to not have annoying popups for 2 minutes, but I'll grumble under my breath and sigh inwardly when I see the link leading me to mediafire.

Is that a creeper in your pants, or are you just happy to sssee me?
You noobs running your mouths about AdBlock are completely and utterly missing the point. What countermeasures you're using matters not one bit.
MediaFire engages in some rather shady practices that are very possibly resulting in malware and keyloggers being installed on some people's machines. That is very freakin' bad and is more than enough reason for users to start shunning that site. This isn't a matter of "not having your best interests in mind" or "amg I hate ads", it's a matter of "they are using you as a patsy to lure your 'audience' within reach of what may well be criminal enterprises".
To spout off with aphorisms like "the internet is a dangerous place" is about as smart as seeing a bunch of gun-toting gangsters shooting up the neighborhood and saying "Bulletholes are natures way of helping the curb flowers grow with surplus human blood".

Really though, uninstall IE 6 and get Firefox or Chrome.
No you're wrong! Mediafire will be the direct cause of 2012! It is already written! The end is upon us!

DropBoxCloudApp download mirrors as well. After comparing the two, I like CloudApp much more than DropBox.

I have always used Ad Block plus so I never really consider pop ups or ads being a factor in anything because I just don't see them.
