What you should be doing is working with a base colour... we will go with a yellow/orange for gold.
then you want to darken the edges, if your material is sharp then use the pencil tool to put shading where the ore meets the rock.
when your shading is complete, think about how shiny your ore is, gold is not as shiny as its polished jelwery form, so pure white highlights might look a bit silly, go for something less red and more yellow/white to highlight with.
the main thing I find about ores is thinking about where your light is coming from (generally the top for most TP's), so where is it casting shadows and also what shape you are going for.
you also need to think about how the rock forms into the ore as well.
I cannot recommend using layer styles or filters for anything pixel art, it should be done by the creator, sorry.

That's what I did for the ores in my 32x pack for the 6 hour challenge. Guess I should have looked at what resolution he was using.

Yeah I'm having some real problems with my stone and ores. First I need a stone texture so that I can do the ores, but I can't come up with a stone texture I like. I don't even know what I want for it, I have an idea for every texture BUT my stone >.>
So I'm kind of stumped on what to do...
I use paint.net by the way, so any tips would be great :biggrin.gif:
EDIT: Never mind, finally compromised a nice stone texture!
Look at stone. I know this seems obvious but it helps a lot. I am constantly looking at my surroundings, studying leaves and bark and how the light and shadows interact. Things like that. If you find you are lacking inspiration go for a walk. Look at rocks and stones around were you live. Or, you could google. But I find nature to be more inspiring than the internet.

As stated before, this will be and is very helpful to aspiring texture pack artists who may need some tips on how to start, and even those that are already well known texture packers some new ideas.

This is really starting to suck...
I'm making a texture pack: (16x) Silent Night My Tumblr for my drawings and stuff: http://pwned1711.tumblr.com/
so this is a really quick trick I learned to get nice depth to ore.
(this is in photoshop, not sure about other programs)
Take your base smooth stone texture
draw a rough shape of your ore with the color you want on a separate layer.
Go to layer->styles and check the emboss box
Then select emboss and fiddle with the settings until you get what you want from the squiggle.
Duplicate the ore layer and then go to emboss settings and select pillow emboss.
Fiddle with the settings a bit.
Now you have ore that looks like it is embedded in the smooth stone.
not good advice for pixel art I am sorry.

if you wish to rush things, then it may help. For quality though, I just don't see it as being a viable option.
