Hey its sockdude! I don't beleive I've ever made a topic on this forum, and I want to create a texture pack and upload it for you guys to use. Anyway, the texture pack basically makes use of the Random Mobs feature of the MCPatcher, and keeps the default minecraft texture pack, except the mobs are different. For example, you can find the default brown and white cow, but you could also find a white and black cow, or a light brown cow and so on. So my question is, since I'm only editing the mobs of the default texture pack, and I'm leaving the other stuff such as the blocks and anything else thats not a mob, would I be considered stealing minecrafts property?
If you are only changing mob skins, then you can get away with your texture pack file not containing the terrain.png at all.
Please include in your texture pack only that which either you have made, or you have permission to include.

Look at Mr. Moderator moderating! :smile.gif: I now it's already been said, but congratulations!
We, the minecraft community, have been gracefully given the right to use the minecraft default textures and to redistribute them. I think we may even have permission to profit off the distribution, however, I would check that if I were you. All that information is on their legal page on the main minecraft website.

The legal page states:
Any tools you write for the game from scratch belongs to you. You're free to do whatever you want with screenshots and videos of the game, but don't just rip art resources and pass them around, that's no fun.
While nobody seems to be complaining if you have one or two default textures in some of your files, you should refrain from uploading the default images if you have made no changes to them whatsoever.

I stand corrected. :smile.gif:
Technically, since everyone running minecraft has the default texture already, including them, in your pack is a bit redundant. Not including them will also cut down on your file size, which is always a good thing to do :smile.gif:
I am using a texture pack, but needed to edit it a bit to suit my needs for my adventure map. I normally ask permission for this kind of stuff, but I haven't gotten a response from the original creator of it.
Would it be okay for me to distribute it if I'm give credit to the creators and specifically say what I have made changes to?
I imagine it would be and I could just take it down if they wanted, but still... I don't know community etiquette for this.

I personally would not have a problem with this if you
1) gave full credit like you said you would
and
2) did not profit off of the distribution of said texture pack. If you want to use an adf.ly link or something for your map you could create a separate download link for the pack that is not.
This all being said, I don't have much authority around here so my opinion doesn't mean a whole lot. Technically it would be up to the moderators and admin of this site to decide.
The page that contains the texture pack should have a section called "License" or "Legal".
Read this section to see what you can do with it.
If it states that you have to ask for permission before reupload, then you will have to wait until you obtain it.

Thanks evil, I will only upload the mob folder. And thanks for all of the help people!

It doesn't have one in it, so I'm not sure. Most it has is credits, but that's just who helped make it. :/

As far as I know, the rules state that you need permission. It doesn't matter if they don't respond, as no response is not an "okay" from them. It's not so much etiquette so much as forum rules.

And copyright law, technically as soon as something is published online it is copyrighted. (assuming the person publishing the material lives in a country that is part of the U.N.)
That's why we need licenses.

I would have said the same thing if I wasn't, it's good advice! D:
