Hey, I've playing Mincraft 1.8 (I know that 1.9 pre is out, but it lags too much) with the default texture pack. It lagged a bit, I had like 100+ fps, but that didn't mean that Minecraft was running smoothly, it was giving me lag spikes very frequently, which was really annoying.
After a while (today) I got bored of the default texture pack and I decided to get a new, HD texture pack. I patched with HDPatcher, reinstalled the mods (Modloader, TMI, SPCommands), downloaded and installed the pack (which is the Soartex 64x Pack) I also downloaded Egg's Texture pack which is 128x.
When I tried them, Minecraft started running at 120+ fps and no lag spikes, everything was running so SMOOTHLY!
I have no other mod than the ones I mentioned, and I have no lag fixer (like OptiFine)
So,
the question here is
Do HD texture packs (or HDPatcher) fix lag spikes (or FPS lag) problems?
nope... the only thing that would make a difference with the patcher would be setting more memory to minecraft/java and running the game with the test minecraft button.
Ah... well, if you allocate less memory to Minecraft, the lag spikes are reduced. For a default texture pack, you can safely set its memory at about 256mb.
I've actually experienced the same jump in FPS when using a high res pack. With a 16px pack, I get 15-30 FPS. When I put on 32px pack on, I get like 5 FPS until I press F3. Then my FPS jumps to around 40-50! I have no idea why this works.
That is bizarre. There is no real reason for that. In fact, your fps should drop when you increase the resolution of the texture pack. I don't (and havn't since 1.6) run default so I have no idea if this is some sort of bug with the new textures.

@dr_pootis:
yeah, having an excess of memory allocated causes it to be swapped to disk instead, and this actually decreases performance. Since Minecraft will almost never (unless you've got a really HD pack running) use more than 256mb, set it to that and see if it helps a bit.

Got quite wrong with that. What I meant is that the "lag" was produced by the "Lag spikes"
So, I don't need glasses!
