Hello folks. This is a set of textures for medieval stained glass windows.
These are intended to be used with any suitable medieval-themed texture pack to liven up your buildings, particularly churches and cathedrals. The page banner there is the Eastern end of my cathedral – credit to KDStudios and Develsaa for the other textures you see in the above image.
This is what the glass panes look like on their own:
About
When I finally gave in to upgrading my Minecraft jar from 1.4 I saw that stained glass had been added to the game. I saw it as a chance to upgrade my cathedral build, but I wanted to do the stained glass justice. Which is why I started making these textures.
I've used photographs of real life stained glass windows, many of them are from medieval cathedrals (Chartres, Canterbury, Lincoln, York, Notre Dame de Paris etc.). I've converted them to Minecraft textures; that is cropping and scaling them into a 256x256 square for the first stage. Then adding a second layer, copying the dark tracery onto the second layer and finally making the bottom layer transparent. This way the tracery remains dark and opaque, while the coloured sections let light through.
I've made far too many - there are only 16 types of stained glass in the game, but I've made 30 textures. My idea was to go for a mix and match type approach. 15 of them are set up to replace the standard stained glass textures aside from black. The reason I’ve done it like that is that in real life stained glass windows on churches and cathedrals tend to look black from the outside, so I like to put plain black stained glass panes outside my windows to get the same effect. There are 15 more textures that are also included for you to rename and use as you wish.
Installation
Simple Method –
Just add Medieval Glass HD to your loaded resource packs and put it on top of the list. The stained glass textures will override the ones in your main resource pack.
Customising the Pack –
I've included more panes than there is room for in the standard number of stained glass textures. This will let you choose your favourite stained glass textures, or if you use a mod that gives you extra blocks you might be able to use them all.
To customise the pack, look inside the folder at the individual textures. The ones which are used in game have the following names:
glass_black.png
glass_blue.png
glass_brown.png
glass_cyan.png
glass_gray.png
glass_green.png
glass_light_blue.png
glass_lime.png
glass_magenta.png
glass_orange.png
glass_pink.png
glass_purple.png
glass_red.png
glass_silver.png
glass_white.png
glass_yellow.png
The 'default' textures for this pack are already included under those names. The remaining 'extra' textures are numbered instead. If you want to use them, choose which 'default' texture to replace, and change the name.
For example, if you don't like the current glass_purple.png and would rather have glass_3.png, rename glass_3.png to glass_purple.png. Simple as that.
By default I don't have a panel named as glass_black.png. This is because real stained glass windows look black from the outside, and so I prefer to make the window two panes thick with a plain black glass pane on the outside to match this effect. If you don't want to do that, then rename one of the extra panes as glass_black.png.
Splicing them into another resource pack –
First, you will need to open up your resource pack. Depending on which unzipping/compressing utilities you have installed, you might be able to drop these straight into the zip file.
Failing that, you will need to unzip your resource pack, add the Medieval Glass HD panes and then rezip your resource pack.
Inside the resource pack, you will find the block textures under the filepath assets/minecraft/textures/blocks.
Copy the Medieval Glass HD panes and paste them over the existing stained glass panes in the resource pack. Back up the existing ones if you might want them again!
Usage
Please feel free to use these textures in any way you wish. I only ask that you credit the original craftsmen, photographers and myself and don’t try to make money from them in any way. These are truly the work of the fantastic medieval craftsmen who created them originally and I can’t claim any more than turning them from images to textures. I’d hate to think that they were being used for monetary gain.
Downloads
I've done four different resolutions here. Obviously the 256x is the 'main event' and most detailed; the 32x is clearly blocky but I still thought they looked good enough to include. I recommend choosing a resolution that matches the resolution of your main resource pack. Please let me know if you have any issues.
They're lovely, but maybe you should put down some suggestions for resource packs these could accompany, if you're only making stained glass. It'd seen a bit odd having higher-res textures along with the default ones.
Yeah, my plan was always for these to be matched to a resource pack of the same resolution. I was going to put some suggestions for packs to use them with if and when I put a download link up, and that's the reason I was going to convert them to other resolutions - so that people could match them to their favourite pack.
At the moment, I'm just trying to gauge opinions and interest in these. I made them for myself to use, but I liked them enough to see if other people might want them too. They've not got a massive appeal outside of other people who've built churches/cathedrals, but those seem to be common enough builds that I thought that people might appreciate some real stained glass. If nobody's interested I'll just keep them for my own builds!

I see plenty of views but just one reply. What do you think of these? Would you be interested?
When I get round to it, I'll choose my favourites and set them as the default stained glass textures, but I'll leave the others in under other file names so that people can rename and use those ones if they want. I'll do the same for other resolutions, and then I'll put these online.
Again, could you please put a download???? this is like being in a candy store but not being allowed to eat anything. Please?
Hi, sorry about the lack of a download on these. Since I didn't get many responses, I felt as though not that many people were interested, so I got these textures to a level that I wanted myself and stopped.
I think I've got at least half of them retextured to 256x, 128x, 64x and 32x, I'll have a dig around my documents folders for them, and do the others.

Out of curiosity, was anybody else wanting these?
These are available in 256x, 128x, 64x and 32x.
I've updated the first post to include the download links there as well. Please let me know if you're having any trouble.
Next up, I'll put up a download for my cathedral, but that will have to wait for another day. Enjoy!
