Glim, you're reading into things i'm not saying/asking. Ha ha ha...
I just said that I preferred the old feel of the 32x pack and am reviving it for personal use. I'm not butting in on your turf.
What I have done is edit-up an alternate set of textures for 64x dirt and dirt-related block textures (including all the ctm) for use under the "..... GS Alternative Textures" section in the "Glimmar's Steampunk 'User' Made Textures" pack. (Where those god-awful stained-clay/plaster alternatives I made ages ago are.)
These new alternative dirt textures themselves are slightly "chunkier" versions of the current dirt blocks, but in the color scheme of ye olde GSP.

That's cos' I'm paranoid!
What!? So I still have to make some alt stained clay textures now?
No problem then for the alt dirt, I'd be curious to see that. I'll stick it in the 'User Made Textures' pack then...'when' the forum tech guys allow me to edit my OP again (still haven't heard back yet ). At some stage I think it would be a lot more useful to have an OP section with lots of little add-on packs that everyone can use to change certain features, entities, blocks, etc in the pack, but we're not quite at that stage yet! One big download of alt textures is pretty much useless to the majority of users.
Knowing my luck, the OP problem has probably turned out to be a lot more complicated than anticipated. I still can't change anything, short of cutting it to a couple of pics and paragraphs, without everything disappearing on preview! So while it still looks presentable I'm leaving it alone and just working on fixing stuff 1.9 broke.

Well, if you really want me to make some stained clay textures...
Although, I recall asking you a couple of years ago if it was possible to make CTM textures biome-specific (e.g. Rusty Iron Blocks in ocean biomes) and you said it was possible. If it really is still possible, you could use natural hardened clay textures for Mesa biomes and the current non-clay textures for non-mesa biomes; Keeping the worldgen in mesa biomes natural-looking without requiring an add-on pack.
On an unrelated note: Have you considered editing the language files to change the names of the items and blocks in the pack to better represent their GSP appearances? Such as changing "Bow" to "Flintlock/Revolver"; "Netherrack" to "Netherplate"; or "Golden Apple/Carrot" to "Gilded Apple/Carrot", And so on...
Yes, the biome specific ctm was an option in MCPatcher and one of my recent suggestions/solutions a couple of pages back, but I'm not sure yet if it is an option under Optifine and we have to assume going forward that we can only rely on Optifine now as MCPatcher's kahr hasn't been seen for a year. Optifine mostly does everything that MCP did I think, but as I discovered recently working on the new girder block ctm it doesn't do 'combined' vertical/horizontal ctm yet (or at least I couldn't get it to work), I still had to find a more long-winded way around. Haven't had the chance to experiment in the area of biome specific textures yet.
Also the biome specific texture root might not be a complete answer for those wanting both natural and decorative stained clay in the same world, especially if you also want to build on or near the mesa biome - you could end up with a structure made up of both sets of textures right on the border. You'd be best placed to speak about that as I don't have mesa biomes in my old Newglim world. Perhaps you could have a tinker in that area and also confirm if biome specific ctm works with Optifine?
Assuming it did work with Optifine, biome specific natural textures in the mesa biome might work ok if you saw it as a scenario where you are digging up natural material, carting it off site, and fashioning it into something more decorative and building well away from the mesa.
All of the above assumes everyone would be using one of the patchers. I'd have preferred to have all natural looking brick textures or clays in the 'blocks' folder of the pack and keep the decorative stuff in the ctm folder for those who use MCP/Optifine, but it got really confusing for me when building and that's when I started tampering with what shows up in the inventory gui.
Anyways, don't bust a gut on the clays, but if you do, remember the brief and I'll eventually get round to sorting it myself. For now I just need to fix more urgent stuff for 1.8 and 1.9.
On the matter of editing the language files, it's never been as urgent a priority as updating new 16x vanilla textures or old 32x GS textures for me. If everything was more or less finished I'd most certainly tinker with the terminology and work on a more filled out lore too. Actually, thinking about it...I'm pretty sure Asikar (possibly using/continuing someone else's work) made a 'drop-in' language file, which should be in the 'User Alts' download I think. I don't think it was complete though and it may be more airship specific than some might want.
Mesa biomes only contain 6 of the available 16 colors of stained clay. Couldn't you just have natural clay textures for those 6 and artificial clay textures for the remaining 10? Or perhaps textures that could conceivably pass as either natural or artificial? The old pebbled and marbled non-CTM stained clay looked passably natural. Perhaps something riffing off of those?

My original clay alternates might've been on the right track for something passing as both natural and artificial, even if it did turn out terribly, as old stucco. Just google image search Old Stucco Building and you'll get some examples of victorian-era stucco buildings in a variety of colors that could pass for both natural clay and manufactured building material.

Yep! All good viable ideas, but as I'm not focusing in that area just at the moment, it'll have to wait for another day I am afraid.
Yet another even better option would have been if Mojang had treated the stained clays like the original clay, making it possible to have a natural and crafted version for each color. Then it would have all made sense and given theme resource packs more freedom. I can't imagine it would have been difficult to do. Haha...except that would be even more work for hard-pressed artists!
The 'boat_oak' is about halfway done, and these things take a lot more work than I originally thought. All of the external fittings and other details, rivets, rowlocks, etc. and some more work on the oars is still to do.
After nearly 6 years of pootling around in a powered boat, I'm still not a great fan of the oars, even though they look nice to look at from a distance. It takes some getting used to, having two flippy sticky things wiggling around in your periferal vision! However, I'm still equipping each of the boats with oars, just to be on the safe side, even if I design the boat with some kind of engine.
Glimmar's Steampunk v.18 Update for MC 1.7, 1.8, 1.9-
This short video demonstrates the new GS v18 boat_oak for MC 1.9.
The oak boat is now finished, but all the external fittings and other details, rivets, rowlocks, paintwork, oars, etc. are still to do on the other 5 boats, which are birch, jungle, spruce, dark oak and acacia. My intention is that each boat will be fitted out very differently...so not just simple planks of wood I'm afraid. These 'boaty Mc boat' things (see what I did there!) take a lot more work than I originally thought and there are now 6 of them in total!
Thanks for watching.

So... boats are "hybrid'? Part muscle-driven, part - steam?
I like this, looks cool. And wharf, I like the wharf area
Haha! kind of three ways to power it really - steam, 'pedal power' when a lever converts the brass pedals from steam paddle control to 'leg paddle power' and oars. Great for a full body workout, then sit back and rest while steam does the rest!
Trying out 1.9, in anticipation.... Not much liking the combat - it has gone from being a complication in a building game to being the primary occupation when trying to explore.
Do not like.
Which means that I am playing in Peaceful mode, which is unsatisfactory in the other direction. (I swear, 1.9 is deadlier in Easy than 1.8 was in Standard.)
I wish to heck that I could turn the new combat off. It is the antithesis of fun.
As Glimmar trys to get the textures made for 1.9 suddenly Mojang Says hey 1.10 will have 4 new blocks and three new mobs take that resource pack designers, Mojang why you so troll?
