I noticed that the really high res texture packs have kind of a weird look to them. I was playing with texturing in a small opengl program I wrote and I noticed that with 256x256 textures, they looked dramatically better if I called gluBuild2DMipmaps when creating texture objects.
This post explains the pros/cons to gluBuild2DMipmaps vs. the newer stuff. Since minecraft uses power of 2 textures and no shader stuff, I think that gluBuild2DMipmaps would be fine: http://www.gamedev.net/topic/452780-gl_ ... 2dmipmaps/
Is there any chance this modification could be made to minecraft when using the HD texture patcher? I think it would dramatically improve the really high-end HD texture packs.

Switch to default texture pack before you try to patch.
I just back into texturing and it is driving me batty trying to get a terrain file installed for testing. When I was making a texture before, I used this program to install them, but for some reason now when I go to select the file I want to use as my texture, it won't recognize any .rar files. I don't have any way to make actual .zips, but it says that .rars should work. Any ideas?
you should make a new update for the HD texture patcher because the other one is out dated by like four updates and now there is tons of great HD texture packs out there like the "painterly pack" or "geek craft" or also joli craft but it is such a shame that the old patcher does not fix the problems because on my geek craft pack the amour has fire and compasses coming out of it. Get Working!!!!
Three Four quick things to say:
1: vRAZZAv, Squareballs and MeowRawrzors; codebox your error reports. It makes it a whole lot easier to read things, and keeps the page from being incredibly long for no real reason.
2: kaikaikai27, firebolt15 and SuperJorma; you guys are all a bunch of assholes. Quit it. It'll be updated when it's updated, until then you should use the beta version.
3: MeowRawrzors; it does work with Win7, so it's not your that at least.
na not buggy, its a rather well developed mod now and dosent clash with anything else sept this, i have over 45 mods running now :/
You're running 45 mods, and yet you still think that it's your textures that are breaking the game?
I guess this needs to be clarified once more:
Texture packs only change the way your game LOOKS.
Mods change the way your game WORKS.
If your game no longer works, it's not because of how it looks. The conflict either comes from a compatibility issue with one or more of the mods, or something was installed incorrectly.
Sorry, I just get annoyed when people overlook the real issue.

Another possible problem is that Minecraft is looking for a texture file it can't find, or has the wrong suffix. That's been the bane of many attempted patches by me.
no not the "texture pack" for someone that gets annoyed when the real issues is over looked, you dont pay much attention
potal gun + other mod = no issues
patcher + other mod = no issue
patcher + portal gun = game exploads
seriousely its not that big of a deal for you to get irate about, i wasnt, just dont insult my intelegence
Well, it seems that you're still not getting it. So let me ask you why you think it's the texture pack patcher that's to blame when your second example shows that it works fine without the portal gun mod?
What makes you honestly think that the issue is related to the texture patcher (which only enables the ability to change how the game looks) instead of an incompatibility with the portal gun mod (which clearly, obviously and blatantly changes the way the game works?)
Sounds to me like that mod doesn't support custom texture packs (probably because it requires some custom texture for portals, unrelated to the nether portal texture in terrain.png). More likely, it's a conflict that's exacerbated by one or more of those aforementioned 45 mods. At any rate, you'll likely get better results by asking the creator of that mod, instead of posting here.
The creators of the texture patcher made an applet that does one specific thing - enables the functionality to change the textures displayed in the game. When installed properly, it works perfectly fine. Most of the complaints here are about issues that have already been addressed, either in the initial instructions or elsewhere in this very thread. Most of the others sound like an incompatibility with something else the user is running.
At any rate, you're barking up the wrong tree by complaining here. We can't help you with an incompatibilty related to some other mod.

I understand. And I'm not trying to flame you, I'm simply trying to get you headed in the right direction.
I see a lot of people who cannot run their game with particular mods alongside a texture pack, and I just wanted to enlighten people as to what each changes in the game and where to begin looking for answers. I hope that clarifies my initial comment.

using "JohnSmith" texture pack viewtopic.php?f=25&t=29164 latest version
Sorry if this issue was already discussed.
I noticed that this page says to never use that function:
http://www.opengl.org/wiki/Common_Mista ... d2DMipmaps
This post explains the pros/cons to gluBuild2DMipmaps vs. the newer stuff. Since minecraft uses power of 2 textures and no shader stuff, I think that gluBuild2DMipmaps would be fine:
http://www.gamedev.net/topic/452780-gl_ ... 2dmipmaps/
If you do use gluBuild2Mipmaps, it's pretty easy and you can find documentation for it here:
http://graphics.stanford.edu/courses/cs ... ample.html
It looks like this:
Just look at the InitGraphics function.
If you want to follow the advice of that "common mistakes" wiki, there are examples of the other stuff:
http://www.opengl.org/sdk/docs/man3/xht ... Mipmap.xml
http://www.khronos.org/opengles/sdk/1.1 ... ameter.xml
Is there any chance this modification could be made to minecraft when using the HD texture patcher? I think it would dramatically improve the really high-end HD texture packs.
