If you look closer, you can see the gas giants shadow is seen as black and therefore transparent by the game, a small buy annoying thing since you can see some stars in the shadow.

I didn't edit any .jar files or anything, just took the original, resized it down some (but it's still bigger than the default moon) renamed it and placed in the usual spot. Works. I've tried some others as well, all appear to work.

512x512 sprites will always work if you insert them in the .jar correctly.
Anything bigger will require an edit to the byte buffer at the moment.
I have no idea how to do that with the latest version.
Notch is going to fix that eventually, but until then...
