I assume you mean the "C:\Users\[USER NAME}\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft " folder that Minecraft created when it was installed.
The . in front of minecraft is definitely needed.
Download and try using the .jar file. If Minecraft runs, the .jar file should run.
Also it helps to make sure you have the latest version of Java installed.

Even just trying to get AE to use a profile of Minecraft that ONLY has Optifine installed (which,as far as I know, doesn't affect biome creation) will cause AE to crash.

yo folks, and thanks for Amidst to those responsible, I've had a lot of use out of it.
I recently updated java from 7 to 8, now when I try to run amidst I get: "The registry refers to a non-existent JRE installation or the runtime is corrupted. The system cannot find the path specified."
Can someone confirm that Amidst should be ok with java 8 or give me a hand with this please?
My best guess suggestion would be to reinstall JAVA.

To add to what's been said, be sure to uninstall all old versions of Java as well. I think the installer gives you this option, if not, you'll have to do it manually according to your OS.

You need to use a non-modified profile/version of Minecraft for Amidst and AmidstExporter. I believe any 1.8 version should work, at least 1.8 and 1.8.1 work for me. Do note that Amidst only produces the same biome layout as vanilla Minecraft, or Minecraft without any mods that change biome generation. And also note that different major versions of Minecraft (like 1.7 vs. 1.8) might or will have different biome generation. But in any case, you always need to run Amidst with a vanilla profile, otherwise it will crash. And make sure you have launched that vanilla profile at least once through the vanilla MC launcher first.
The last time biome generation changed between versions was between Release 1.6.4 and Release 1.7.2.
The biome maps will all be the same (disregarding Ocean Monuments) in any current version from 1.7.2 through the 1.9 snapshots according to my experiments.
Definitely 1.7.2 through 1.8.8.

The only way Amidst or AmidstExporter can cause Minecraft to crash is to cause a fatal error in your Java VM. Make sure you have the latest version of Java AND ONLY one version installed for 32bit and one for 64bit (If you are running a 64bit machine) {yes, I know, dumb statement}.
Since Optifine doesn't affect biome generation AND does seem to upset Amidst and AE I've been recommending that people have a unmodded vanilla profile of the Minecraft version they use if for nothing else than to use with those programs. Installation of Optifine should leave your vanilla profile as it was so it should be available for Amidst or AE to use.
If you aren't aware of it, Amidst and AE use much of the code contained in the Minecraft.jar.

Yes, Amidst will load a 1.7.10 profile with no problem and display maps even though it will display "[Using Minecraft version: unknown]".
In the case of AmidstExporter, it works with any profile of a vanilla version of Minecraft through PCMCv1.8.8 although with 1.8.8 it will say it's using 1.8.7 even though there is no 1.8.7 .jar file on my machine.

That being said, I'm a little confused as to what you're asking.
Are you saying that the Amidst launcher displays a list of possible profiles and you select the one for 1.7.10 and the launcher crashes with a message saying that Minecraft 1.7.10 is missing or unknown?
If so, do you realize that after you create a profile in the Minecraft launcher you have to run that profile at least once to cause the launcher to download the proper .jar file from Mojang and create the associated folders for that profile?

I can't help you solve your problem but both Amidst and AmidstExporter work with java 8 update 60 on this Windows 10 machine.
