This is not true; I've used it to help develop a mod; it actually maps out changes to landmasses and biomes although does have issues when you add new biomes.
For example, this shows a map of a seed in an upcoming version of my mod TMCW, which shows "hot" and "cold" climate zones as all desert and all ice plains respectively, much more land than would be expected for 1.6.4 but much more ocean than in 1.7+, and the biome size was set to 2 so I could map a much larger area without running into memory limits; the area shown is equivalent to 55,000 blocks across with default biome size. Note that only vanilla 1.6.4 biomes are displayed since I did not include my changes to biomes, other than modifying GenLayerBiome to get the climate zones to show up as desert/ice plains (in reality most of these climate "zones" are other biomes, they just make their respective biomes more common, which can also be found in "normal" areas). I also added a couple new GenLayer classes which do not appear to cause any issues; I've confirmed that what AMIDST shows is correct in-game:
However, this happens if I try use the full version (actually, an older version which made less changes to landmasses themselves); the colors often don't even correspond to the same biome, nor are the biome names displayed when you mouse over correct, and the only location that it got right is the world spawn point (note that I used the original AMIDST for this since AmidstExporter crashes due to a NullPointerException):
In my experience Optifine (which I've heard breaks AMIDST even though it doesn't touch world generation) also doesn't cause any issues, possibly related to how I installed it; I just copy and rename the folder for the appropriate version and add it directly to the jar instead of using its installer, although that shouldn't make a difference since it basically automates that process. Of course, it won't work with Forge mods at all since Forge itself has to be launched to load them and I don't think AMIDST does that (Forge also does not actually alter the jar until the game is launched; everything it does is done at run-time and I know that AMIDST excludes unnecessary libraries).
IIRC, (I could be wrong, it's happened once or twice before.) every abandoned mine has a large room with a dirt floor with mine tunnels radiating from that. Amidst reports the x and z location of that.
The best way to verify that is to choose a seed using Amidst with a mine indicated close to spawn under a plains.(less to dig through)
Switch to peaceful mode to prevent unneeded distractions and give yourself a stack of torches.
Then fly to the x and z coordinates indicated by Amidst, then start breaking blocks straight below you and fly down the shaft made placing torches as needed.
I suggest that you DON'T do this without flying as it's possible to hit lava and you're pretty sure fall when you find the mine.
EDIT: As a matter of fact I just found this seed, "8864976236595596431" to test this.
Using PCMCV1.8.9 I spawned next to a plains village with a church, blacksmith, 2 libraries, and 6 fields near a nice sized ravine.
Amidst 4.0 indicates a mine at -40, 360 which turned out to be under water so I had to fill in the river at that point with dirt.
I then started down.
I emerged in an 8 x 9 dirt floored square room with a domed ceiling 7 meters high at the top where I broke through. The floor is at y=24.
There are tunnels going off in all four directions. One with a spider spawner and another with a lava flow.

Hrmm, I'm stumped! The "new" version of Amidst - the beta 8 version of 4.0 won't work for me at all. I'm on PC, and have tried with several different versions of minecraft - 1.8.8 1.8.9 1.0 pre1 and some snapshots from 2014. I get the profile selection screen, hit whichever profile I want to test, and then it just opens a white screen with no menus or anything, just the white window. No error messages or anything, just a white screen showing me how dirty my monitor is =P
Tried with what I think is the "old" amidst (amidst exporter) and that one opens up normally and can be used.
Anyone have any ideas what's going wrong?
*edits* I did try both the .exe and the .jar just in case it made a difference somehow!
Try pressing Ctrl+R or Ctrl+N from there. If that doesn't work, then I don't know. I hope this helped! (Those keyboard shortcuts are to load a new world onto the screen. At startup, AMIDST is white, and a seed must be selected(chosen or randomly) to show the world, and that may be why.)

The program still seems to work, just not display anything. Attaching an image to show what I see =) I did Ctrl+R, but it was still all white, Ctrl+N brings up the dialog box as you can see in image, but still nothing but white. I did however enter random text, and hit enter - the dialog box disappeared so then I did Ctrl+C to copy the seed, and it does actually create a map, cos it copied a seed number - I just can't see anything!
*edits* have double checked that java is up to date, and am now updating video drivers just in case =)
*edits again* updated drivers didn't help =/ Have a Radeon HD 78xx in case it's a known issue. Also cos I forgot to put it before, Windows 7 64 bit - sorry I keep adding details, have had a migraine all day so my brain is fried =P

To get a history of seeds mapped with either Amidst or AmidstExporter all that needs to be done is create a file in the same directory that the program is in named "history.txt" and after you restart the mapping program all seeds mapped will be logged to that file.

I tend to play on a dedicated server, so can't open a map stored on my HDD, the seed for my world is a long sequence of numbers, and having to manually copy this from my game (no cut and paste available) to amidst is tiresome. If amidst allowed you to save seeds (like bookmarks), it would save a great deal of hassle.
I take it you have OP permissions on the server and use the /seed command, since there shouldn't be any other way you can get the seed from a server, unless you have access to the level.dat file from the server. Anyway, you can copy things from the minecraft chat, by shift + left/right arrow, or at least by shift + home/end hilighting the text and then ctrl + c to copy, and you can paste that to the amidst seed window by ctrl + v. Just a tip for the future, since apparently there is also the exact feature you were asking for anyway, according to BigAlanM.

To be specific, what I would do If I were you would be to create a profile for 1.8.9 as that's the last release that uses exactly the same world generator and structure placement as your preferred version, release 1.8.8, (or you could make a 1.8.8 profile).
In either case I would name the profile something like "R189vanilla".
Also set the game directory to the same one you have set up for your modded 1.8.8 profile.
You DO know to use different game directories for incompatible versions, don't you?
In fact if you select your 1.8.8 profile then click on "New Profile" the launcher will already have that information entered.
Then run that profile once to get the launcher to download and save all the proper files. You don't need to actually play a world.
You can then use Amidst 4.0 with that vanilla, unmodded, profile and it will recognize it and Amidst will produce maps as accurate as it can.

Yeah, it works now with both OpenJDK and Oracle Java after I rebooted my PC. I know I had changed the default version to all six versions and tried each one separately, so I'm guessing it was the reboot .

This is not true; I've used it to help develop a mod; it actually maps out changes to landmasses and biomes although does have issues when you add new biomes.
For example, this shows a map of a seed in an upcoming version of my mod TMCW, which shows "hot" and "cold" climate zones as all desert and all ice plains respectively, much more land than would be expected for 1.6.4 but much more ocean than in 1.7+, and the biome size was set to 2 so I could map a much larger area without running into memory limits; the area shown is equivalent to 55,000 blocks across with default biome size. Note that only vanilla 1.6.4 biomes are displayed since I did not include my changes to biomes, other than modifying GenLayerBiome to get the climate zones to show up as desert/ice plains (in reality most of these climate "zones" are other biomes, they just make their respective biomes more common, which can also be found in "normal" areas). I also added a couple new GenLayer classes which do not appear to cause any issues; I've confirmed that what AMIDST shows is correct in-game:
However, this happens if I try use the full version (actually, an older version which made less changes to landmasses themselves); the colors often don't even correspond to the same biome, nor are the biome names displayed when you mouse over correct, and the only location that it got right is the world spawn point (note that I used the original AMIDST for this since AmidstExporter crashes due to a NullPointerException):
In my experience Optifine (which I've heard breaks AMIDST even though it doesn't touch world generation) also doesn't cause any issues, possibly related to how I installed it; I just copy and rename the folder for the appropriate version and add it directly to the jar instead of using its installer, although that shouldn't make a difference since it basically automates that process. Of course, it won't work with Forge mods at all since Forge itself has to be launched to load them and I don't think AMIDST does that (Forge also does not actually alter the jar until the game is launched; everything it does is done at run-time and I know that AMIDST excludes unnecessary libraries).

Hrmm, I'm stumped! The "new" version of Amidst - the beta 8 version of 4.0 won't work for me at all. I'm on PC, and have tried with several different versions of minecraft - 1.8.8 1.8.9 1.0 pre1 and some snapshots from 2014. I get the profile selection screen, hit whichever profile I want to test, and then it just opens a white screen with no menus or anything, just the white window. No error messages or anything, just a white screen showing me how dirty my monitor is =P
Tried with what I think is the "old" amidst (amidst exporter) and that one opens up normally and can be used.
Anyone have any ideas what's going wrong?
*edits* I did try both the .exe and the .jar just in case it made a difference somehow!
Try pressing Ctrl+R or Ctrl+N from there. If that doesn't work, then I don't know. I hope this helped! (Those keyboard shortcuts are to load a new world onto the screen. At startup, AMIDST is white, and a seed must be selected(chosen or randomly) to show the world, and that may be why.)

The program still seems to work, just not display anything. Attaching an image to show what I see =) I did Ctrl+R, but it was still all white, Ctrl+N brings up the dialog box as you can see in image, but still nothing but white. I did however enter random text, and hit enter - the dialog box disappeared so then I did Ctrl+C to copy the seed, and it does actually create a map, cos it copied a seed number - I just can't see anything!
*edits* have double checked that java is up to date, and am now updating video drivers just in case =)
*edits again* updated drivers didn't help =/ Have a Radeon HD 78xx in case it's a known issue. Also cos I forgot to put it before, Windows 7 64 bit - sorry I keep adding details, have had a migraine all day so my brain is fried =P

Curse PremiumI take it you have OP permissions on the server and use the /seed command, since there shouldn't be any other way you can get the seed from a server, unless you have access to the level.dat file from the server. Anyway, you can copy things from the minecraft chat, by shift + left/right arrow, or at least by shift + home/end hilighting the text and then ctrl + c to copy, and you can paste that to the amidst seed window by ctrl + v. Just a tip for the future, since apparently there is also the exact feature you were asking for anyway, according to BigAlanM.

Tested Amidst 4.0 on 1.9 and it worked ... but my games are all 1.8.8 and Amidst says my profile is "not found." Any idea why? Perhaps I should try an older version of Amidst ... or is it because I have Forge and Optifine in my 1.8.8 game? (By the way, the only mod I use that alters the landscape is the one that generates extra clay.)

Curse PremiumYou need a profile that uses vanilla minecraft, it won't work with profiles using forge (even without any other mods). Just create a new profile using some (well, preferably the same version as you are playing in) vanilla version of the game.

To be specific, what I would do If I were you would be to create a profile for 1.8.9 as that's the last release that uses exactly the same world generator and structure placement as your preferred version, release 1.8.8, (or you could make a 1.8.8 profile).
In either case I would name the profile something like "R189vanilla".
Also set the game directory to the same one you have set up for your modded 1.8.8 profile.
You DO know to use different game directories for incompatible versions, don't you?
In fact if you select your 1.8.8 profile then click on "New Profile" the launcher will already have that information entered.
Then run that profile once to get the launcher to download and save all the proper files. You don't need to actually play a world.
You can then use Amidst 4.0 with that vanilla, unmodded, profile and it will recognize it and Amidst will produce maps as accurate as it can.

Hi, just here to report an error trying to run Amidst 4.0. This is on Xubuntu 15.10, Oracle Java 6, and the JAR version downloaded from https://github.com/toolbox4minecraft/amidst/releases :
I tried using Oracle Java v6, v7, and v8 -- plus OpenJDK v6, v7, and v8. All get similar/same errors.

Curse PremiumFrom my understanding that error means that you need Java 8 to run it. Are you sure Java 8 was actually active when you tried it?
My mods on CurseForge. My Github page with mods, tools and other stuff.
can i use this with different launcher?
Yeah, it works now with both OpenJDK and Oracle Java after I rebooted my PC. I know I had changed the default version to all six versions and tried each one separately, so I'm guessing it was the reboot .
