I've had a long-running thread about my application, the Minecraft Structure Planner over on the general discussion forum for quite a few months now without realising that there's actually a forum dedicated to tools!
Just to introduce you to the Structure Planner, it allows you to design all kinds of pre-fabricated, parameterised structures, freeform structures, and pixel art using the standard Minecraft blocks, but outside of the game. The application presents each design in three main displays:
[*:2axym5n3] The Height Map - Shows the heights of each row/column in your design so that you get an idea of the top-down plan view of your structure. Allows you to track your building progress by clicking on completed cells.
[*:2axym5n3] The Layer View - The primary display for all of your designs. This view shows a layer-by-layer breakdown of your structure, and also includes a semi-transparent view of the blocks from the lower layer to aid in ground-up construction and alignment.
[*:2axym5n3] The 3D Projection View - allows you to see your current design in 3D so that you can get a much better idea of what it will look like in-game. You can of course rotate/translate/zoom the view to see your structure from all angles.
The application itself supports loading/saving/printing of your structures, as well as exporting them to NBT/schematics files for import into your world via MCEdit. You can also import schematics allowing you to modify structures extracted from your (or someone else's) Minecraft world, as well as being able to import Binvox model files, or structure templates from the Ruins Minecraft mod (if you want to include random ruins in your world, but don't want to install a mod to do it.)
The application has been in development for coming up to six months now, so is pretty well established (I've tracked just short of 20,000 unique visitors to the download page, so there's a large and active user base constantly offering suggestions.) If you're interested in learning more about the Minecraft Structure Planner, please stop by at the Minecraft Structure Planner website and have a look around. There are plenty of screenshots of the various views, forums providing discussion and technical support, and my development blog detailing current releases and future ideas/additions.
Nice application. It's easy to use, and the 3-D view is good enough to serve its purpose effectively. Why doesn't this have more thread views?
One thing that bothered me was constantly having to scroll up and down the texture list because the icons take up so much space. Perhaps you could make the texture list smaller?
Anyway, here's a quick test I tried.
Maybe I didn't choose the best test subject, but I was going to try and build the house in a SMP server, anyway. Two birds with one stone, I suppose.
So yeah, if you need a structure planner, get this. It works nicely. :smile.gif:
I have a couple of ideas for the texture list, because that's been bugging me too:
[*:17ol3gib] Vertical panel splitter - if you could resize the texture panel to say allow three or four columns of textures then it'd be easier to navigate them.
[*:17ol3gib] Combo/drop-down that allows you to select subsets of textures.
Personally I think I might implement both of them. It's always nice to be able to resize elements of the GUI to give more or less space to particular areas. The thing I really like with the combo/drop-down selecting texture subsets is that it would also allow the user to define their own named sets of textures. Would be really useful for the Pixel Art designer as you could auto-generate art using particular sets of materials only (for example, you could generate art just using wool, or only materials that can be gathered during regular gameplay.)
Wouldn't people just generate a ton of diamond ores?
If they want to, yes. I can't stop them from creating designs containing tons of diamond ores just like I can't stop them using InvEdit to give themselves whatever they want, or MCEdit to turn an entire mountain into diamond ore, or any number of the tools available to enrich ore deposits to ridiculous levels.
This tool's really about assisting the creative process. If people want to give themselves a ton of diamond then there are WAY easier ways to do it than this.
Nice job on this tool. Im gonna use this on my next projects. I got a suggestion, though. Could you add tnt blocks?
Nope :smile.gif:
Let me change that answer a bit. If you can give me a GOOD justification as to why something designed to be creative, and to aid people create structures should have TNT in it then I'll consider it. And in this case "Because I want a house made of TNT" isn't a good justification.
Ive built a fully functional nuclear power plant including meltdown by combining lava which triggers the tnt stacked in the "reactor core". But well, gotta do this manually. :/
You know, who am I to argue with the user? Just for you, I've pushed out 0.99.4b. Includes a bunch of the missing textures, including TNT.
My first guess is that you're running64-bit Java, or you have multiple Java installations. The FAQ covers how to fix that with a bit of simple file copying.
Just downloading now, If it is as good as it looks... Epic! :biggrin.gif:
[\Bump]
Unfortunately I designed it to be tragically disappointing. Sad really, but I made the decision early on and it's too late to go back and re-engineer it now :smile.gif:
Okay, I feel the need to alert you to this, not all mice have wheels. You may want to at least map zoom to Page Up/Down as a backup.
*has no mouse wheel*
Wish I could, but the orbit object in Java 3D 1.5.2 is sadly lacking in that kind of functionality (at least as far as I can tell.) I'm hoping that when we get the first stable release of the new Java 3D, Orbit is going to be a lot more use to us.
Just released 0.99.4c. It seems like a relatively minor release, but the modifications made were infuriatingly complex! Here's a list of what you're getting:
[*:1wlifpni]Added filtering to the Texture Panel. Not sure I like the texture filtering yet, but it does currently allow you to reduce down the number of textures visible at any given time. When using the 'auto convert' functionality of the Pixel Editor only the textures currently shown in the Texture Panel will be used.
[*:1wlifpni]Made texture panel resizeable. Panel will now change the number of texture columns displayed according to its width.
[*:1wlifpni]Added horizontal/vertical axis lock when drawing in the Freeform panel. Simply hold down SHIFT before starting to draw a line, and your cursor will be locked to vertical or horizontal movement depending on which direction you move your mouse. In simple terms, it allows you to easily and quickly draw straight lines.
[*:1wlifpni]Added Spawner texture. Right now you'll only get pig spawners, but the next release will allow you to place a spawner and then select its properties (spawn rate, entity type etc.)
[*:1wlifpni]Modified 'new version' splash screen. Pressing 'escape' on the 'new version' splash screen will close it. Pressing 'enter' on the 'new version' splash screen will open a browser window to the download page.
Just started using this time help make Pixel Art this is sooooooo much better than woolify or whatever its called. I just have one question. Can you please add in the "Save As" option to save as an image file with the grid still on it. I ask this because most of the pixel art I do is on a private server not in single player. So this option would be soo much better. Good work with the program!

Would 'Print to file' do what you need? If so, that's in there already.
I Have never used the Print to File option, though when you choose print to file its go a weird file format. .prn? never heard of it. What I was thinking about is choosing to save as a jpeg or png or whatever.

Ah yeah, I was thinking of the Windows XPS document writer. If you have it, that'd probably do something close to what you're looking for.
I'll add saving the bitmap output to the release schedule.

Check the FAQ for how to solve this problem. If that doesn't help at all then post to the Technical Support forum and I'll take it from there.

Click on the 3D model, then press the arrow keys. That'll rotate it. Mouse wheel will zoom you in and out. Shift + arrow keys will move the model.
Yes, once I've got the final set of functionality completed I'll be working on the tutorials and instructions :smile.gif:

That's a little too ambiguous for me to be able to answer.
