I'm having some trouble getting this thing to work.
I'm using a mac OSX 10.5, with java fully updated, and so far i've tried running the osx.command with success, i think, although it says i have a bad version number in class file...? and now i'm not sure at all what to do. I really have very little experience installing programs like these, so I would appreciate some VERY SPECIFIC help. Thank you!
Two posts in a row, I know, but the new save file format has been released, FYI.
Oh cool, thanks. Another blog to add to my aggregator, apparently; didn't realize there was actual content @ mojang.com.

When I downloaded the .zip file, unzipped it and ran the .exe it gave me the error
Minecraft directory not found: C:\<path to minecraft_xray.exe>\.minecraft
Hm, definitely something odd going on there. Could you include the actual full path that it's using? It's a bit strange that you have ".exe" in there; I wouldn't expect that to be the case. It could be that something is screwing up the minecraft data directory detection, which would certainly prevent the app from running, even if you create the .minecraft dir by hand, because X-Ray wouldn't be able to read the texture data, etc.

How do you use it on multiplayer???? on mac
As The_Pastmaster mentioned, you need to have a local copy of the world dir. X-Ray won't be able to read things off the network, itself.

I'm afraid I don't have any really specific help to give, since I don't run OSX, but if you're getting the "bad version number" thing, it's because your installed Java version is too old. If you run "java -version" from a commandline, you should be able to see a "1.6.*" version in the first line; I'm guessing that you'll probably find that yours is reporting 1.5. I'm not sure if there's a Sun/Oracle version of Java available on OSX, but if so you should probably make sure you're using those.

Sorry, I misspoke there. It doesn't include the .exe in the path, it just has the path of the folder that contains the .exe with the \.minecraft tacked onto the end.
I'm pretty sure the path itself isn't the issue since it changes when I move the folder around and I still get the same issue but here's the two examples I have just in case:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\minecraft_xray_2.7_mb_8\minecraft_xray_2.7_mb_8\.minecraft
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\minecraft_xray_2.7_mb_8\minecraft_xray_2.7_mb_8\.minecraft
I do use the administrator account, I don't know if that would cause any problems with the app trying to access the files. Maybe there's some weird permissions thing going on?

Huh, quite odd. Could you find out where the actual .minecraft directory is, on your system? The one with the "saves" directory in it. Right now X-Ray looks for it under %appdata% but perhaps it's located elsewhere on your system (perhaps due to being Administrator).

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\.minecraft
Which... seems wrong now that it's pointed out. Isn't it supposed to be \Administrator\Application Data\.minecraft? If so that would probably explain the problem...
Edit: There also is \Administrator\AppData. Also, isn't %appdata% a vista/win7 folder?

Yeah, that does seem wrong. Anyway, I'll have the next version of X-Ray check for that location if the main one isn't found. For now, actually, you could just copy the .minecraft folder over to where X-Ray is expecting it, and it should run fine. I think you'd actually only need "bin/minecraft.jar" for stuff to work properly, though if you use a texturepack you may need options.txt and the "texturepacks" dir as well.
And then head to a DOS prompt in the same dir that you downloaded that and run:
java -jar testenv.jar
Just so I can see what a couple of variables are on your system. Thanks!
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop>java -jar testenv.jar
Appdata: 'null'
Homedir: 'C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator'
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\.minecraft: Minecraft dir NOT found in Appdata
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\.minecraft: Minecraft dir found in Home
And thank you! I got the minecraft.jar copied over like you suggested and everything's working perfectly now! Yay!

Glad to hear it, and thanks for the data. The next version of X-Ray won't require you to copy that dir over (which'll get released hopefully not too long after the next Minecraft release, today or tomorrow).
When I open up the program, it loads World1 but its totally black. Like I have the F1, F2, etc. and the stuff in the top left corner, but the map itself is black. The files .minecraft_xray are in the ApplicationData folder and all that..what should I do?

I am having the same problem if anyone could help that would be great

If you guys are using it on worlds that have been used in Beta 1.3, X-Ray doesn't support those quite yet. I should have a new version out within the next three hours or so to address that. If you're feeling ambitious, feel free to check the project out via git (at sourceforge or github) - the current code in there is mostly feature-complete for the 1.3 release; I've mostly just got testing and the like to do.
(Oh, and if you do check it out, make sure that you've got Java and Ant installed (not sure if Ant is included with the default Java distributions on windows; you can get it here) - when you do, you should be able to just run "ant run" from the checkout dir, and it'll compile and launch.)
Edit: Ha, 30 minutes spent trying to figure out where the hell a noticeable framerate drop was coming from resulted in my eventually noticing that Minecraft itself was still open on another desktop. D'oh!

The big change on this one is just bringing it up-to-date with Beta 1.3, and it should support all the new blocks and stuff (though you'll note that, like other "complex" objects, I don't make any effort to align the bed textures properly, etc). The new McRegion-based chunk storage system is, of course, included as well. The other changes are mostly just minor bugfixes and the like. Oh, and snow renders more properly now: as a thin layer, rather than a whole solid block (except, of course, for Snow Blocks placed by the user).
Let me know if there are any issues!
Oh, and I imagine few people will care or even notice, but since the sourcecode repos are public now, I'm not going to bother packaging up sourcecode diffs for releases anymore. If you want a patch to a previous version, just grab it yourself from git. Forward!

Can't wait for it!!
There you go!
Edit: Whoo, and just inside my self-imposed "three hour" timeline.

It works, thanks xD Its somewhat hard to control and a bit laggy (but that might be because I have iTunes (the lag monster) and Minecraft (the lag monsters minion) up and loading)
Can this program be used with SMP maps, or is it strictly for stand alone?
It will load SMP maps just fine (the format is identical) but you need to have access to the world directory somehow. I think that there's at least one application available somewhere that can pull map data off the wire and save it on your local disk, but X-Ray itself doesn't do that.
Anyway: if you've got access to the world dir, you can load it just fine.

Thanks for the quick response! I can access the data (it is a private server sitting next to my workstation) but do
I need to copy it to the workstation and put it in the appdata single player world folder? (It is a custom directory
on the server (c:\mcsvr) and not in the standard appdata folder).

Nope; choose "Other..." from the startup menu when you launch X-Ray, and you can browse to any arbitrary world directory that your computer can see. Enjoy!

You need the world save.
