My first project, the Loki from Star Craft 2 (the mercenary battle cruiser from the campaign)
The one problem I had was the voxelated file wasn't symmetrical, which would have been handy on something like this. Great little program to play around with.

if your project is supposed to be symmetrical, I find the best solution is to cut the voxels in half and mirror that half on the other side. Would be nice to have some kind of tag to do this during binvox, but it isn't hard to do manually.

The method of mirroring it your self still does have some slight distortion, since the voxels seem to calculated starting at the side, so there is no true center to mirror from. I'm thinking the most effective solution is if there was a tag that made it calculate voxels starting from the center point and calculating outward. Even when it isn't symmetrical, it just adds character in the end, so it all works out.
Hi everyone, I'm newbie here and also very very new in the 3D model, just start learning. I'd like to know how long to take you guys from starting point until you are in this level. I want to get some idea for me to make decision that I should continue learn this or not (I feel too difficult for me after joint this class).
By the way, pmin00 now has a separate gallery of (only) hand-made binvox objects on Picasaweb, see it here. If you have hand-made something cool, send him a picture.

Yeah, that lack of symmetry is annoying and should be fixable. I tried to walk through the code and fix it, but there's just one transform too many for me to quite tweeze out what's going wrong. Patrick said he's working on it, keep on mentioning it to motivate him
loading model file...
MeshFileIdentifier::*create_mesh_file(bunny.ply)
PlyMeshFile::load(bunny.ply)
Timer [load] started
native binary type is little endian
Timer [load] stopped at 0.000908 seconds
Is the model file in the same directory as binvox?
And my model file is in the same directory... Has anyone seen this error before?

holy crap! I know that map!
The program looks nice, if i can figure out how to use it properly, until then, I'll be making my castles from my imagination. :tongue.gif:

The real trick here seems to be locating a model that fits what you're looking for. Or you know...learning to make one.
If anybody happens to spot a model of a mostly humanoid holding an object over their head (don't actually need/want the object, just the pose) let me know. Something in the vicinity to this guy's pose: http://www.inmagine.com/tt055/tt0700604-photo
PS: This took quite a while. made from obsidian, snow, and stone. Maybe when I can afford that much gold, or yellow wool, I will swap it for the stone :smile.gif:

This is probably going to be a dumb noob question but is there a way to convert Collada files (*.dae extension) or *.skp files to wrl's for them to be used in this process?
I'm asking because alot of the places mentioned in this thread to get 3d models have some for free but most charge, google's sketchup/3dwarehouse has a lot of models and they all seem to be free.
I managed to figure out why it wasn't working for me. I had to edit the .bat file and replace 'java' with the path to my proper java.exe. It all works perfectly now. I've made quite a few models but I've only got pics of the first one so far.
Instead of moving java around, it is probably easier to convert
straight to .schematic from binvox (use -t schematic).
I've also added a '-bi' parameter which allows you to
specify which block type to convert to.
So for example, if you have this 3D model, in a file 'cannon.ply':
and you run binvox with these parameters, for example:
An explanation of the parameters:
-c: carve style voxelization, good enough for most models
-d 64: put the model in a 64x64x64 box
-fit: crop the resulting voxel model
-t schematic: write a .schematic file
-bi 57: use 57 (diamond block) as the block type
(note added later: apparently later versions of Windows don't allow windows below a certain size (new Windows, new bugs :-). To get around this, try using '-d 128 -down' instead of '-d 64', or even '-d 256 -down -down' instead of '-d 64')
You'll get a file 'cannon.schematic' which you can import straight into mcedit.
A screenshot of the result:
You may have to do the odd rotate/roll/flip to get it to point in the
direction you want.
Of course Real Minecrafters build everything by hand :-)

i tried it when i export it to mcedit it export as empty blocks ? help ?

Aw, man. That thing is sick. Any chance I can get the schematic, or model file?

I am using a mac and whenever I try to do

I'll even buy a model if it's under 30-40 bucks.
That's about .01% the amount of information anybody would need to help you with a problem...
