New update, Minecraft Portable 2.1a:
- Updated to MCFS version 0.5.2, now works with Halloween update
- Fixed issue where Java would not be able to start in non-MCFS version (drfakeacc)
- Added mirror links for those who can't download from Dropbox (jefequeso, sorry this took so long)
@googie2149: Unfortunately that's not possible ATM. It's written completely in Windows script, and relies on Windows' environment variables to make Minecraft portable. There might be some way to write a Linux script, but I don't have the know-how, and no way to test it.

It's a no go for me on both versions. I use the one without MCFS and it will run and I can login and it gets all the files but then just crashes after the Mojang Logo screen. The MCFS version will load and login and download but then goes to a black screen where nothing happens. It should be noted that I have to use Portable Java which is sitting in the same folder but still doesn't help. Any ideas?

I'm a little confused by the directions and I can't get it to to work properly. (By the way, I'm attempting to get this running on a USB)
Now, I understand step one, obviously. Download your portable client, and run it.
Now, for step two, are you referring to your portable client again or are you referring to the actual Minecraft.exe that you download from Minecraft.net?
In any case, I did the following and noticed the following errors:
1) Downloaded and ran your client. (The USB version)
2) Ran Minecraft.exe.
3) Then, I noticed that the files Minecraft.exe downloaded were STILL downloading to %appdata% folder on my PC.
Note: I have BOTH the minecraft.exe and YOUR minecraftp_mcfs.exe saved on my flash drive.
I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. Why is it still saving the files to %appdata% and not my flash drive?
fail
it logs me in the first time, downloads the files, gets to main screen. i close out and start it again to test it and it goes black and never does anything else. fix s'il vous plait

Well I dont know why, but this little program of yours runs PING.exe and cmd.exe why does it do that?
I can understand the cmd.exe running. That's the command prompt. It basically allows the program to input various settings through text. In most cases, even for GUI programs, to implement run-time settings, they use the command prompt. As for ping.exe, my best guess is that he runs it, to check to make sure that the Minecraft server is online. If not, then he can provide feedback to the user, to let them know that the server is offline.
At least, this is what I would run those for. I suppose they could be used maliciously, but I would consider it quite unlikely. There's easier ways to do bad things, than to use ping.exe and cmd.exe.
Hope that clarifies the (likely) uses. Obviously, the author would have to post to verify that's what they're being used for. Mouser X over and out.

There's no way to wait for an set period of time in a bat file, so I have to rely on ping.exe to occupy the time. CMD.exe is there because it executes all the commands (Minecraft Portable is really only a batch wrapper, after all.

I made a new account just to say this. I've had temp freezing problems ever since I got the game. They were like little half a second freezes every 3 seconds, which are extremely annoying because it creates jerky screen movements which causes to missplace blocks.
I'm not having this problem anymore now that I'm using your portable version on my PC. I'm not sure if it's because I'm not connected to my fileserver at the moment, or if it's because it doesn't require Java. I have no idea, but, no freezing problems makes me happy. This also allows me to play when my profile server is down too, my saves are located on the profile server so.. :tongue.gif:
Changes:
- General optimisations: programs like 'minecraftp.exe', 'cmd.exe' and 'ping.exe' no longer run with the game (only when launching it). This applies to both versions.
- [MCFS version only] Updated to work with Minecraft 1.2.2 (updated to MCFS 0.5.7)
- [MCFS version only] Uses in-memory MCFS version; this should speed up starting/closing times.
- [MCFS version only] Now patches MCFS using the MCInjector program provided by bekvon (thanks!)
- [MCFS version only] No longer attempts to patch MCFS every time the game is launched; it's now a one-off patch.
I probably should make a changelog :tongue.gif:

please do a update so Norton don't keep deleting it. even if i tell Norton to exclude it from threats it still deletes it. i tried to show some ppl what i build but cannot because of the anti-virus they have.
This is why i use comodo.
When i get a threat notice i can add a item to my trusted files selection something Norton don't have.
I extract Minecraft Portable to my flash drive, start it up, it downloads stuff, close it.
I start it back up and it locks up downloading (Says, "download complete" but never goes to the main menu).
I can't get it to run here at the library much less at home without internets.
Wat do?
I'm having a similar problem to mbs, i think. I click the .exe it then proceeds to download then it goes to the menu. I exit it out and try the .exe and then log in. The game then tries to load, and actually says done loading but the loading bar stops with only a little bit to go and stays on that screen. Any help will be appreciated.
Changelog:
- Complete restructure of the program; the '.minecraft' folder is stored in 'mcp_data', along with a configuration file for Minecraft Portable.
- Removed seperate MCFS and debug versions. If you want MCFS patched in, go to 'mcp_config.ini' inside the 'mcp_data' folder and change 'USBMode' to 'true'. If you want a log (as per the debug version), change 'EnableLog' to 'true'.
- Updated to MCFS 0.5.9 (1.2.3_4 compatibility).
@mbs, Drake: This update should fix your problems.

Firstly, Thank you for the portable version, it needed doing.
I have followed your instructions, and have the portable version working, and using java portable [not particularly necessary, but just in case I want to play on a pc that doesn't have java already]
I have a couple of issues, just wondered if anyone could shed any light on them ?
I imported my world from my main pc, which worked beautifully, however i cant seem to find a way of recompiling my save into a format my main game will understand. [ when I try copying it from the portable folder back to my pc, it is as it was originally, before I copied it off in the first place]
I also seem to be able to add stuff out of my inventory into a storage chest, and each time play again [on the portable version] I have the items again in my inventory, and the extras i added are still in the chest !
anyone else had either of these issues ?
anyone know how I can put my save file back together so i can use it on a normal version of minecraft ? [ I think the .mcworld file is where my files are stored, but don't know how to get them into my normal save]
Thanks NotTarts ! and again, great work on taking the initiative to put a portable version together !
I don't actually use the USB version myself, so I can't tell immediately whether it's a Minecraft Portable issue. From a guess, though, I think your problems are related solely to MCFS. The official MCFS thread, then, would probably be the best place to find solutions :smile.gif:

I started playing Minecraft this weekend, and I'm hooked. And portable makes everything better.
Yesterday, I was running the version before 1.4. I downloaded Portable 2.2 and it would load the first time and download, etc then, close, reopen and it hangs at "Updating Minecraft" "Done loading". I patched in the MCFS (I realize now I probably didn't need to) and it started working.
Today, I downloaded Portable 2.3 and it downloaded the needed files. Close, open, stuck at "Updating Minecraft" "Done loading". I appreciate any advice you can offer.

I moved the mcp_data folder, re-ran portable 2.3, it downloaded and before closing I chose single player and created a world. I closed and reopened and it works.
I copied my save data to the new mcp_data as World1, and moved the "new" world to World2 (out of order, but you get it). I have not yet set usbmode = true.
I set usbmode = true and it hangs. Set it back to false, and it hangs.
I moved the mcp_data folder and repeated and it works for now. But it narrows the behavior and provides a work around.
Running Windows XP SP3. I downloaded Java last weekend from java.com (the old version locked up frequently). The portable Java is very slow on my USB stick, but it works too.

Not a bug, just haven't updated the MCFS files for 1.2.4 yet. I'll work on it now :smile.gif:
EDIT: Updated to 2.35. Here's the changelog:
- [USB mode only] Updated to MCFS version 0.6.0 (1.2.4 compatibility)
- [USB mode only] As a result of the MCFS update, you can now save your worlds to disk at the pause menu (you no longer have to exit to the main menu).
