Eh, griefers gunna grief, constant server backups are the only real defense against them.
Mage armor sounds nice, but I'm less sure if you should need it to use runes. I'd much rather see a specialized set of tools for magery. Maybe something like:

Which makes a staff. You could have additional types with different heads and shafts, too. For example, you could have the head work by tier, with more powerful stuff letting you do more powerful runes. The base of the staff could determine it's durability, letting you use it more. (activating runes uses durability, and you can probably hit people with it pretty well too) Dunno exactly what you'd use for each, though. Maybe, Flint/Gold/Diamond for the heads and Stick/Iron/Obsidian for the shaft?
Anyways, once you've crafted the staff, then, you set up a rune, which is just a keystone surrounded by 4 torches and a bunch of redstone dust. Higher tier keystones allow you to stuff more redstone into the staff at once. Depending on how much redstone you have, the staff gets "powered" to a certain amount. (set to a value, not added, so you can't just keep using a tier 1 block and a couple dust to charge it infinitely) Then, activating runes consumes power based on the power of the rune.
Maybe you could even give the staff an effect where, if you right click something other than a rune to activate, it shoots fireballs? I guess you'd have to mod in a re-skinned arrow for that though. Maybe it just shoots out a couple arrows if that's not possible.

I doubt it will ever be possible, considering that items and such mechanics are client-sided, while this is a server mod. It would require a modded client, and everyone who's playing to download that modded client. If notch ever switches game mechanics to server-side (which I doubt, even if that would be awesome), THEN it would be possible.

I think it would just be EPIC to watch as the ground slowly dissolves under neath the mineshaft rune one block at a time, obviously you wouldn't wanna make it to slow, but having it all just disappear instantly makes it feel less "magicky" to me.

The resulting damage to the map after chicocalypse. (map will update in about 45mins and not show damage anymore, since server was rolled back).

Before anyone complains that nothing was accomplished today, this is a HUGE break-thru, cracking the mob spawning code and modifying left clicks all at the same time.
There are big plans brewing. A rough (ROUGH) graph for the class trees has been sketched, along with 4 more secret runes in the work.
and whatever you set as the key*(number) prevents any runes from being activated in this area.
So you could put it inside of a building to prevent someone from solar flare or flash freezing it.
Maybe stop TnT if you could as well...
Oooo maybe make it spawn protected-ish if you could, put it in your structure prevent people from tunneling through your walls until they destroy the rune.
seems like your really starting to bust open notches code and get in deep and change some more of the core gameplay.

...looking through the code, you are 100% correct. Cows and sheep are LITERALLY DISGUISED AS CHICKENS. I spawned a cow, and it was a chicken. I killed it and it dropped leather. I spawned a sheep and it was a chicken, which didn't drop anything. So weird...

I was thinking about donating for a rune or 2 but the idea that other people could find out by paying put me off. You should have like 2 groups 1 that can be found out by paying and 1 that cant to maximize opportunity to meet what people want.
would you consider making some runes just for 1 server like stand alone files that mesh in with the base but no other server has them?

Once 3.0 comes out, people won't be able to find out by paying anymore. They will have to climb the ranks of magic for hours to find it, and when they do they'll only be able to use it on that server unless they're willing to repeat the process later on.

Alright, I'm ready to release one last version before I officially begin implementing the new packet system. I've been working on it all day but mostly just testing theory, not actually integrating it into the mod. That's for 2.0. However tonight, 1.9 will have:
Spell of Flight - World Rune, keeps a block of water at the player's feet to enable them to fly
Hidden Passage can now be opened from the center block OR the top one, and multiple passages can be linked together by building them intertwined (hopefully FrostyWolf will put up a video for this technique?)
