Wow, this is amazing work, can't wait to see it in action. Would add a nice fantasy feel to Medival Fantasy RPs, and its a real physical type of magic.
Will tools be the only conduits for runes? Cause if you could enchant other items that are used up on use, I could imagine runes that empower things like a Feather (just for example, brain not working) that when held and clicked (like a tool) it finds the closes ground and creates a 2x2 pool of water. That way, people could enchant the feather with the rune (rune could be pretty hard to make or the use item could be something better then a feather (maybe a bowl, which are just as easy I guess but makes more sense)) and when falling, quickly pull out the feather and look down, creating a safe pool of water to land in.
I could also see a mining rune that digs a long tunnel straight down and lines one side of the wall with ladders. Downside would be no material from the cut out tunnel, but you wouldn't have to dig it yourself or build ladders to line the walls.
For the rotation problem, maybe you could just tell people to orient their stuff to the north, since we now have a moving sun and moon. You could also add a compass rune incase some people can't figure that out.
Anyway, here's my idea for a rune. If it is possible to spawn items on/in/near a rune, I would propose this: a set of runes that summons a tool every X minutes. The basic structure would be this (replace torches with redstone torches):
[] [] []
[] [] []
[] [] []
[] [] []
[] []
You would then fill in the middle 3x3 similar to a crafting block (replacing sticks, iron, gold, and diamond with logs, iron blocks, gold blocks, and diamond blocks). Once finished, the resulting item would spawn in that single open block on the bottom.
i.e. for a wooden pick, you would do this:
[] []
[] []
[] [] []
[] []
for an iron hoe, you would do this:
[]
[] []
[] []
[] [] []
[] []
This can be expanded/shrank to allow or disallow different materials (say, to remove diamond stuff or only allow basic wood and stone tools) as well as allowing or disallowing things like armor (replace leather with cloth), swords, and bows (replace strings with cloth). I would like to say you could include arrows too, but the closest thing (cloth) just doesn't make a logical connection.
Additionally, you could also make tools spawn at a rate increasing with quality (5 min for wood/leather, 10 for stone, 20 for iron/gold, and a staggering 60 min for diamond). That would make sure it doesn't become unbalanced. I decided to make gold the same value as iron and not wood because of its additional uses now in this mod. Anyway, this allows you to make wood or stone runes at the start so people coming in could basically plan on having a set of equipment they can pick up, but not diamond, since it takes an hour to spawn.
Creates a skyward flow that pushes a PC up at about the same rate as water flowing down.
"Core sample" spell.
Cuts/pastes a 1x1x64 group of (non-adminium) blocks from directly beneath the center block in the rune to directly above the rune in mirror image (i.e. the one directly below the center block is directly above, etc). Perhaps it could switch the blocks above it with the blocks below it? Should there be a lava spring block among them, well then that's just part of the fun.

well this looks as good a place as any to use my first post, do you plan to have a single rune for each effect, or perhaps larger more advanced similar runes will produce a larger/longer effect?
The HalfBlock would be a lever. You throw all your stuff into that hole and pull the lever. The things in it will disapear and be saved into a database. To retrieve it, simply make a withdrawal rune.
For instance: you draw a rune and activate it with a particular gold tool. Once activated, the rune disappears leaving behind a single gold block or something alluring. Once another player steps on the block or hits it with anything it causes instant damage or catches them on fire or explodes or something.
I'm actually not sure how to work with loose items at the moment, so until I figure it out, we're restricted to runes that use blocks. I'm pretty sure timing mechanisms would be easy to add, though, and the "wall of fire" / "wall of water" ideas are awesome! Plus, the idea of a symmetrical compass rune which points the way to the north could solve the problem of rotating while still having an awesome "leet mage" feel. :biggrin.gif:

For each item that I add rune support to, I have to override another class. I was planning to just keep it simple and override only bg, go, ak, ds, and hy-- the tools.
MID-POST EPIPHANY--
LOL, while checking the source to make sure "hy" was actually a tool, I found the code that spawns seeds! This means I can indeed spawn items, including the "tool crafter" rune. However I don't know how to search for them (if it's even possible) so right now the persister rune isn't possible except in the form of a block bank.

My ankle's uncle is my uncle's ankle. It's true! My Server Mods: Runecraft SMP Server Mod - java class replacer for SMP which adds magic runes. Llamacraft SMP Server Mod - bucket fix, lava nerf, etc.
Nice idea, and wood + fire = coal ( charcoal )
On another thought, that would be a good add-on to the crafting rune and we could drop 8 sand in and a torch ( I would say coal but we cant really get that, Unless it is obtained by combination for charcoal above) and it would return 8 glass. Just a nice magic alternative to smelting :biggrin.gif:
Either i misread or i havent seen it, but what about a trap rune? i mean like a cage that if you step on it, your encased in a stone 5x5x5 with a 3x3x3 pocket of air, would be used to catch players or animals.
Or it could use what ever was around it, so if you take the time to "fill" the runes insert slots. that would the the catching element [HInt for instana over kill: ]
Using or making this i would say should check 1 block above the center so that it can be buried in the ground, with the floor of the cage being that block layer. So this as a side view:
= Wall Choice [As in it can be anything and what is chosen to be the cage walls]
= Redstone/rune formation
= The Activating block [im thinking something not too hard to get so that this can be a common rune used but not spamable]
[] [] []
[] []
[] [] []
And the rune looking like this:
= Wall Choice
= Redstone/rune formation
= The Activating block
As a final note: i say a cheap version should be available too.
And that the Wall Choice blocks and the Activating block(s) should be consumed but NOT the redstone in this one.
And not all blocks should be able to be used in the wall elements.
And maybe make it so that the 5x5 layer under the rune and to the sides has to be placed with the Wall Choice blocks too? just to make it so you cant go from x gold to like x^3 gold :/ or what ever the ratio is :tongue.gif:
Just personal thoughts is all.
Alright guys, I'm leaving for the week now. I hope someone will be able to update llamacraft while I'm gone, and I'm sure you'll be coming up with great rune ideas in the mean time.

= regular wool
shrine of Thomas ( causes sheep to spawn nearby )
The following idea is just suggestion. I came up with it in the last ten minuets. Pick it apart as yo like but by no means is it perfect.
Power level would indicate what object would be able to hold or activate the spell.
Feather would be a power level of 12-20
Gold axe or Gold pic-axe would be 500 range
Diamond axe or pic-axe would be 1000 ish range.
I think the power of the spell should be based on the size, amount of red stone, and value of materials.
First, I think all the materials should be based on a tier system 1 - 10.
Dirt would be tier 1 because it can be easily found and requires no tool to harvest, and diamond ore (not block) would be tier 9 as it requires you to travel to the depths of hell, have at least an iron pic-axe, and its rare. The diamond block would be tier 10 because you need 9 tier 9's to make it.
Second, the amount of redstone would be a multiplier
1-5 = multiplier of 4
6-10 = multiplier of 5
11-15 = multiplier of 6
16-20 = multiplier of 7
21-25 = multiplier of 8
26-30 = multiplier of 9
31+ = multiplier of 10
burst of flowers-covers the surrounding 9x9 area in red flowers.
there are 8 red stone , it is a 3x3 square, and there is one tier 1 so the total power level would be 45. 5x3x3.
maybe something along those lines.
this would be so you couldn't put a kill spell on a feather.
oh and

would be a wand. the could be ]" title="-<->" /> . the wand could be better at casting spells, or the tip type could be better at casting certain spells. Wands could be the only thing that could can spells?
How about a friendly Creep rune? Would that be too hard to plop up some Skeles that fight for you?
My idea would be the following:
= Redstone Wire
[] [] [] []

It would likely consume the torches when activated, and place a Skele Archer on the four corners. Getting the Obsidian to work would be the most difficult, making this a high-level rune.
How bout a rune that you put on a wall (vertically), when activated, it blasts out a 3x3 hallway, say 20 blocks deep. It would make tunneling so much easier. But perhaps it wouldn't work against artificial blocks, to prevent griefing.

That would be awesome!
It'd be cool if tnt smoke particles fell from the blast.
Diamond Tipped Arrow - Drills its way in a 3x3 hole (centered around the diamond tip) straight ahead (in the direction of the arrow) for say 100 blocks. Basically it creates a large tunnel in whatever direction you choose. Maybe you'd need a golden enchanted shovel to activate it.

Creates Adminium around the rune and under it. Then creates lava in it. You throw stuff in it for incineration, then jump in it to deactivate.
Perhaps a health shrine, like in Diablo or roguelike games? Maybe you could build the shrine and it has a number of uses before it is depleted?
The farmers charm sounds great, like upgrading to gold tools in Harvest Moon. "Charge up to til 3 squares of dirt in front of you"
Maybe some kind of "Fissure Strike" that sends a ripple of fire forward.
I think runes that assist you in different jobs like digging, tilling, mining and wood gathering are more feasible.
A 'Light" rune that gives you a light radius while walking
Perhaps a Sun rune to bring daylight and a Moon rune to bring night?
Excuse me if these suggestions are unfitting.
