i kind of hope he back ports the major 1.7.10 features to 1.6.4. and honestly, if it wasn't for the aether 2, i'd be on 1.7 right now, but they are far off from a 1.7 release, as their beta release (mutation) will also be for 1.6.4. so it looks like i'll be stuck on 1.6 for a while... and btw, you think it's not good for mods to stay in older versions? look at the aether 2, it took them a year to update from 1.6.2 to 1.6.4...
To be fair, I stopped caring about the Aether a LONG time ago (ditto for RedPower 2). Sure, there's a release, but from just the preliminary forum posts there are compatibility issues with other dimensional mods which means we're still waiting for Mutation update to properly integrate that behemoth into any modpack. Also, though losing ONE dimension might not be a big deal, I use Erebus, Twilight Forest, Ars Magica 2, Witchery, Extra Utilities, Mystcraft & Biomes O' Plenty. Too much content to lose over a mod that doesn't add enough to warrant it. It's a fine mod though, just a bit late into the game to care. Also, I'm pretty sure they said they were going straight to 1.8 after their Mutation update, so 1.7 seems shafted for now (could always change though).
If a backport weren't such a pain in the rear, I don't see a reason not to backport. If this were the 1.5->1.6 transition, I wouldn't be tooting the '1.7 Or Bust' horn. However, one of the core mods this mod provides compatibility for, Applied Energistics, was rewritten from scratch and not directly ported. Most mods had hundreds of errors fixed when they went to 1.7, sometimes thousands. Thermal Expansion saw some big changes. With the scope of this mod, you're asking them to maintain two separate copies of it. That's a tall order, and that we're even getting a 1.6.4 release is testament to their compromise and acknowledgement of our patience. I'll happily take what I can get, one update or ten, and if it's quality (which there's no reason it wouldn't be) I'll use it going forward.
I think progress is best. If there are no real advantages for the developers, staying on old tech/versions just to appease the public is wrong and we are quickly becoming a minority if not so already. Will this be a valid argument in a month?

My current mod pack is basically "1.7.10 Or You're Dead To Me!". A lot of good mods (Witchery, Tinkers' Construct, Blood Magic, Botania, IC2) have already updated to 1.7.10, which honestly is a better Minecraft version than 1.6.4. Most of the mod authors just want to get through the mess that is 1.7.2 and get on to 1.7.10 to be ready for 1.8, and I want to be prepared for that as well. It's kind of selfish for us to ask for backports/bug fixes on an outdated version of Minecraft, just because 1 or 2 mods we "can't survive without" haven't updated. I've just left those behind and hope they catch up.

That's basically what I'm doing for my 1.7.10 modpack - play with what's there and if it's not, add it later or let life move on. I'm probably going to wait until the major bugs are worked out of them before I spend the time building one though.

And what makes the 1.7.10 version of minecraft better then 1.6.4 ? Because I run my mod pack with 300 plus mods thats still on 1.6.4 with 0 lag . I do have a 9k dollar gaming rig to though with 32 gigs ram , but the 1.7.2 and 1.7.10 version of minecraft are the leggiest versions of minecraft yet even with no mods and the 1.7.10 version with 170 mods my new mod pack has bad lag spike just like vanilla 1.7.10 but worse . There is nothing for 1.7.10 better then what the mods for 1.6.4 already had/added . Nothing special about 1.7.10 to me other then not worrying about ids but that was no big deal to me only for the people that don't know how to change ids in a config file .
With the vanilla version of 1.7.10 in MultiMC Launcher I get occasional lag I never got in 1.6.4. With the warning in the console about tick lag or some mess and I read something about mojang knowing it is a bug to where chunks don't get fully unloaded right or something . The way I feel , and because I have a very expensive gaming PC that I mainly use for other fun fps games I should get 0 lag , and especially with no mods installed . Its so annoying that my next mod pack I may wait for 1.8 of minecraft and just hope all the mods don't take ages to update , and minecraft fixes the lag problem they know about .
Anyhow 1.6.4 is still the most popular version of minecraft ! For now .
So, what about the "ME Infusion Reception Bus"? That was my biggest reason reason for watching this mod as closely as I have... I don't mean to be rude but that's just too big a part to get us all hyped up about, just to leave it out. -sigh-
Our primary focus will be 1.7.10 after releasing a 1.6.4 version. I haven't talked to Alexbegt whether we should support two mods at once. We may stick with only bug patching for 1.6.4 and expanding 1.7.10.

1.7.10 is cooler than 1.6.4 because moar new stoofs from our favorite mods (TE4, IC2, FSP, TC4.1, etc)!
9k Gaming rig? With 32 Gigs? You probably built your rig wrong and with even $5k I can probably get something more than just 32 Gigs... I can run 189 mods just fine, lag-free, on my MacBook Pro.
On the other news, 1.7.10 updating is making some swift progress. Alexbegt will be on vacation until Friday, though.

My argument is less about which Minecraft version is better as it is which one will yield more fruit being developed for. If I were a Forge dev, I'd start to question why I even work on the API for a new version if everyone wants to use the old stuff instead. 1.8 isn't going to be a joy to develop for either, and all that will be achieved by waiting for it to update your modpack is delaying the inevitable rewrite you WILL be required to do to get your stuff working again. The users, the modpack creators - tweaking configs is nothing compared to the BS devs have to deal with; we have it fairly easy. Progress hurts sometimes, as anyone that's played modded Minecraft for a while has seen, and this is no exception.
My own pack has 198 mods in it and other than the occasional hiccup with recipe clashes, it runs like a dream - by far the most coherent, cohesive set I've assembled. But, I've been doing this for a couple years, so I'm fairly well-versed. New users on the other hand may not be so, and the rise of prebuilt packs sort of spoils people out of doing the work themselves. Many of these new changes in Minecraft/Forge are geared toward making the process smoother for us to use it. These are all growing pains - in a month or two, this won't matter.
O/T, I'm actually waiting on my new server world to get too deeply into Thaumcraft so I can use this mod to make life easier. Ars Magica/Witchery/Blood Magic were feeling neglected anyway, haha

The differences between 1.7 and 1.8 is less radical than 1.6 and 1.7. Praise the road! \o/
Anyway, when 1.7.2 forge came out, some mods like BOP and IC2-Ex wanted to jump in for the first bites.
Name a public modpack that had multiple major MC versions that you could upgrade from without breaking worlds.

You are right about the recipe conflicts I had a bad problem with that and especially since my mod pack has more then 300 mods in it . I use a mod HERE called NoMoreRecipeConflict and it has helped a lot , but other then that my pack with 300 mods and a x256 texture pack runs smooth on my PC with 60FPS with vsync on and its on a 30" 2560x1600 res screen although not many can run my mod pack like me considering I have a 9k dollar gaming PC setup that i mainly use for other fps games . My pack is only for a select few people that can run it .

You are right there sir ! I can not recall one mod pack that ran on 2 different MC Versions that I could swap to without breaking my world .
with the case of 1.7 though, because of the new biomes system, even in vanilla you would break your world if you went from 1.6 to 1.7
I was all excited as I read through the post... then I saw you redacted the download. Dammit. xD This would fit perfectly with my Magitech server. Well, for a good part, seems like you don't have any worldgen with this so we can just slide it in even with current 1.6.4 worlds. Thanks for that, and I eagerly await its release!

i keep making the same mistake, i think "oh, i've given them a few months, surely it'll be fixed by now" THAT is why i seem to ALWAYS be angry to some of you, my advice is to get the lead out.
there were nice things here, until the mod author threw a tantrum.
it's a mystery of the universe i've long since given up on, why is minecraft the only videogame in the universe that i can't max the graphics settings on..
oh well, keep calm and continue digging.

Of course, we've shoved both mods into our dev enviro to make sure it does.
The real question is: Does it work without EC? :3
