I've been working on creating a small deep sea creature. I figured it could glow in the dark waters of Minecraft and possibly more mobs that will sit on the bottom of the ocean. Would anyone be interested in this kind of mod? I've been able to get it into the game, but I've had some progress.
I've started making a bit of progress. I've finished creating the model for the angler and I have it in game and i'm trying to mess with the AI.
Now I'm thinking I can take stuff that notch did and try to put it into my code but not everything is working out so this may be a while. I'm going to make the angler fish look at the player when they're near. I figure I can take that from a zombie or something. I also want to give the angler a dim glow to it. This may be the difficult part of the mod since a glowing mob is difficult. But if I can find a charged creeper I believe that they glow when they're charged. I could use that. Also I'm working on keeping the anglers in the deeper and darker sections of the water. I have a feeling that I could do whatever it is notch did to make zombies and skeletons hide from the sun by waiting the shade.
If anyone knows how to do any of this please let me know It could speed up the completion of the mod.
So far the mod creating has been going good for my second mod and me being new to mod development. I have been having some trouble with mob AI, but I am able to spawn the Anglers in the water and they sink to the bottom very well. I have been messing with the mob animation. So far I've gotten the tail to rotate like a propeller to a submarine but I'm going to make it more fish like. Plus i'm considering making the jaw of the angler move slightly.
If people are interested in this mod let me know here.
another quick update - have have successfully animated the angler's jaw, flippers, and tale. There are only two problems so far. the animation is very quick so i'll have to fix that, and the animation stops when the mob stops moving. If anyone understands animation please give me some tips to animating. So far I have taken the animation for the dragon jaw and applied it to the parts of my angler with slight modifications and it has worked well. I'll post a video when I have finished it completely. I'll post my code for the animation here so you know i'm not lying.
I'm proud to say that I have finally gotten my favorite feature working for the angler - the glowing. Now everything is very basic and simple right now but here's a screen shot. Now almost all of the basics are out of the way, I just need to get the AI moving the way I want.
Edit:
Here is what anglers look like from the top of the ocean at night. I think Its a nice addition to the sea floor.
I just want to let everyone know that this mod is not dead. It has been inactive for a while, but I'm waiting for the 1.3 patch to come out before I do anything else. If anyone has any other ideas besides the angler for me to add tell me. I'm open for ideas and help.
Well it seems that I have hit a wall here with the mod. I have the angler in the water, glowing, spawning, and swimming. But it moves like a squid and not like a deep sea fish. I actually have no idea how to code at all. I've been learning as I go, and so far it hasn't been that bad. All I've had to do is work with things that have been already created. But now it seems that I have to know a bit more java to make the angler swim the way I want. I'd have to make it all on my own. Also the animation stopped working when I started using the squid's movement because of the way its written. If someone is an experienced coder, could they write up a simple fish animation. In the mean time i'll be taking basic tutorials of java.
I'd say that most of the angler is done - like 80% - but I would like to make more mobs for the deep sea mod so the total mod progress is not very far.
But don't worry everyone I won't give up. This is more of an experimental mod for me to understand things a little more.
I'm a semi-expierienced programmer and I'd be happy to help someone learning to mod. I'll make you an animated fish that you can learn from. I'd say the hardest part about making a mod is not the programming itself but rather learning how to integrate it with minecraft
Update: With quite a bit of help from mic1211. The angler is looking better than ever. It not only spawns in the water and looks amazing. It swims like how it should - like a deep sea fish. Now I have to do a bit more stuff to make the angler a little more amazing and then I can put it out for everyone to test while I get more deep sea creatures. Shouldn't be too long. If anyone has any suggestions on what I should do next - let me know.
EDIT: read first post for video of angler to see it's animation, movement, and visual appeal in game.
I have just finished editing some of the animation and the movement of the mod and now it is available for download http://www.mediafire.com/?427rnkler36929r" target=""here. A special thanks to mic1211 for helping me with the animation and movement coding, it would've taken a lot longer without your help.
After you try the mod - give me some feedback so I can improve it to your liking.
After some thought, I've decided that the next project for the mod would be a goblin shark. I've already gotten started on some sketches of how it should look when transformed to look more like a Minecraft creature and it worked very well. I have also noticed the need for undersea vegetation. I have started brainstorming what to add, something with bioluminescence, but I don't want too much light underwater. Part of what makes the deep sea interesting is the lack of light.
So for those of you who don't want to read: in the next update you should look a goblin shark and some glowing undersea vegetation.
So far I think this mod is looking really good! I would love to help you but i literally know nothing about making mods, but I could give you some deep sea creature ideas if you'd like.
Go ahead and message me some ideas. I may not use all of them, but I do want to have quite a bit of mobs in my mod. Also development so far is good. But I want to make the tail of the goblin shark sway more realistically. Right now I've researched videos on how the tail moves, which is quite simple but I don't quite know how to have separate parts of the mob move as if they're one. I guess i'd have to freshen up on my math a bit more and look up more tutorials for java.
If there's anything else that you think needs to be put in this mod, just pm me and I will look into it. It would help me quite a bit to get some more ideas. The angler was really all that I wanted but I realized that one mob won't really cut it.
Ok. I've sent you what i would think would be a sufficient amount of ideas I hope you use one of them
Also, on a unrelated note, I actually haven't gotten the angler fish mod installed correctly. I have forge and not mod loader so i've tried putting it in the forge mod folder (obviously didn't work) and I've tried putting the files into my jar, but it still doesn't work. Do you have to put the files in a certain folder in the jar? I'm fairly new at using mods so I'm not sure...
I haven't used forge before so I don't quite understand your situation. But if you want to use the mod, you do need use the latest version of Rigumi's Modloader. I'm sure if you google it you can find it somewhere on the forums. The install is a little bit complicated for people new to it, but you need to open the minecraft.jar file with winzip or something similar and drag the modloader files into there. Also don't forget to delete that one file, I think its meta-inf or something all I remember is that it was all capital letters. Once you do that I believe that you can just drag and drop all of the files from the angler mod right into the minecraft.jar and it should work. Enjoy.

Good job i like the Glow in the dark!
