I don't have a ready beta but I will have it out soon™.
Due to Minecraft's infinite water, it will be replaced instantly. No amount of code can change that.
On an unrelated note, I'd like to ask everyone who plans to post here to move conversation to the release thread, unless it is regarding unreleased content.
- On Day 5 of the Solar Apocalypse, make all grass/dirt blocks (in direct sunlight) turn to coarse dirt. This would present greater challenge by making normal dirt a more valued commodity as the player cannot use coarse dirt for farming or growth of grass.
- On Day 6 of the Solar Apocalypse, flowers, tallgrass and leaves are deleted if they are in direct sunlight.
- On Day 7 of the Solar Apocalypse, make all sand (in direct sunlight) turn to glass--just to make things harder on the player and add a tad extra realism.
I might implement something similar to your first suggestion in the future. Your second suggestion is already implemented and in effect, and to my knowledge glass is refined molten sand, and it would be more realistic to turn it into lava.
I like this concept. I'm using the 1.7.10 backport along with old MCA 4.0 mod because I like the "save the villagers" scenario and that way I can get the villagers to follow me around and do what they're told. However, I do find it a bit easy to exist off the surface. For instance, I rescued a desert village and bunkered everyone in a pyramid. Plop some water down, add some dirt, make a farm - all is well. No danger, infinite supplies. Everything we need, forever. Bo-ring!
So my next thought regarding this mod would be to add some more stages of destruction. Maybe the first phase is to gather resources and move underground before the surface bursts into flame. The second step could drive you deeper underground, perhaps water begins drying up underground as well, starting from higher altitudes and gradually all the way to bedrock, forcing you to move deeper underground to maintain a food supply. All tiles could randomly start dissolving and stone could start turning into lava at higher altitudes... Dive! Dive!
The goal, ultimately, would be to build a nether portal (or portal to other suitable modded dimension) and establish a sustainable home (or colony) in the other dimension, before it's too late...
Since it looks like you already have this setup with toggled destruction types/phases, how much damage would ultimately be done could be customized by the player at world creation.
Its stalled for now.I've been too busy to work on it for a while now.I'm working on a new version for 1.8 that is making good progress.
It will be an API that will allow anybody to make plugins for.

I have a working version of the API for Minecraft 1.8. In addition, I have the Solar Apocalypse addon around 85% completed.
Going to be ironing out the flaws in Solar Apocalypse and the API tomorrow. Aiming to have a release soon.
You can help determine the release order by voting in my poll. I will begin programming the other content packs in order of difficulty soon™.

All apocalypses are good! Maybe a config to choose which happen or a different world generation?
When you post a mod: "No pics no clicks" and "MCreator = bad ~99% of the time"
Don't forget to read the crashlog before reporting the crash. It might tell you why it's crashing.

That wont be so easy when the glass constantly breaks.
I'll make it harder when I have the patience to continue programming.
I'm kinda busy with other life commitments, so I haven't been able to do much for a while. Soon, though.
