Question: When will this be reality? Or have you done any modelling so we might see what the little guys would look like? :smile.gif:
Nice to see you again :wink.gif:
I don't want to put myself or Overdozer94 in any haste, so I won't set any deadline.
Well, I did, though (somehow):
I am trying to let Pictogon make a trailer/teaser/whatever in about 3 weeks. It's a plenty of time, I got no exams to write except the one on Wednesday, so I can do a lot of things. It will include the robots, some of the functional blocks and items, some surprisings, but I am afraid no AI so far. I at least try to include it, since I will use the AI editor myself to create each robots AI, but there will be no GUI editor in this pre-alpha indev teaser video ^^
Until then (and I am saying this twice: This is not a fixed date or so, I don't want to put any pressure on someone) I will maybe write some blog posts on tilegames, show some well hidden things on screenshots, tweet something and, of course, extend the concept.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to rush you or anything, I was just curious since Magic Chest wasn't even scheduled to be released until Minecraft 1.0.
I would rather have it take more time and be done right then just be slapped together. Almost reminds me of minecolony (which had so many issues, though most of them were with the digger, that guy was just broken and never worked right). And it almost felt too cheap as they worked for free. Whereas here, you have to actually build the robots.
Question: Will they have a chance to break down on their own so you'd have to run over and hit them on the head with a hammer to get them working again? (Or have a repair/medic bot to fix them back up?)

*plans world domination with a robot swarm army*
When they fall into water, they will explode. When they fall into lava, they will explode. When they fall down, they will explode. When they die, they will explode. When they do something, they will explode. Well, the good thing is they won't fall, since they have jetpacks. So no explosions here. And the last one was a lie. They explode on dead, though. But this explosion is not an explosion. Just throwing some scrap metal and trash. ^^
And I don't like them to break down, unless a mob kills them. It's just disappointing when you rely on a carrier or miner for a long and complicated factory and it breaks down. Really.
Imagine your most awesome robot swarm army (Making the ****in AI fly could be hard :tongue.gif:) with super bowmen breaking down because that silly coder put that feature in. And this happens while you have spawned 1000 zombies to test the armies power.
I will also add boxes, that can be thrown. One box releases the NanoBots, one box acts like a weak bomb (can't break stone), and one box will create a small house. Quite useful for nights outside without a bed and a sword ^^
More boxes to come :wink.gif:
but will you still continue magic chest mod on another post? i still need it for *insert mob torture name here*! and to those who helped with the mod: i dont mean to spam

I won't continue Magic Chest, no. But it's generally included into NC.
I got two ideas and wanted to ask you if they are worth to be made:
Jetpacks are always cool, especially if the player can use it, but since IC^2 has implemented a jetpack I am not sure if you need another one.
And I recently thought about Levels for the Nanobots with the possibility to transfer player experience to Nanobots; They can collect it still, of course. They could get increased stats, more life, do their job better or whatever is possible.
What do you think about it?
I'm not big on the player jetpack idea. It's too 'tech' in my opinion.
Actually, the only thing that I HATE about this concept is the idea of them being technology in the first place. Minecraft is a pretty low-tech game, and Sci-fy themed mods in MC always turn me off. :sad.gif: (If it's any indication, I re-skinned the Magic Chest softwares to be crystals in my homebrew texture pack.) Could they be something else? Like... something magical? Since, you know, magic is like technology without all the wires. :wink.gif: (I see Redstone as being magic, FYI)
The levels idea, on the other hand, is great. Especially if you can choose what is augmented, like speed or carrying capacity. I'm always happy to hear about new uses for Experience! :smile.gif:
Since the bots can be told what to do I would also like to include an AI editor, so you are able to write your own AI scripts. I will also add a GUI then, so the users with no coding experience can also build some AI stuff.
What do you think?
I like this idea because If these things are going to be genuinely useful (*cough*unlikewolves*cough*) they'll need to be pretty smart. I'm brick dumb when it comes to coding, so having a simple UI for people like me would be AWESOME!
Just a suggestion: Can each Void Storage container have a 'native' inventory, but also access every other Void Storage container in the world? Like, I place one and give it a name. I place another, and I give that one a name. With two in the world, I can switch either to be its native contents or access the contents of any other Void Storage container in the world. If one ceases to exist, the items native to that storage container become inaccessible; unless there's another one with the same 'native' name. It's complicated I know, but it makes sense to me. Use it or not, as you see fit. :cool.gif:

Well, this has a point, but I think Minecraft is rather an "open themed" game. You can add what you want and it is most likely to fit (unless you add, well, space ships or such stuff). So, you could see NanoCraft like IC2 or BuildCraft: It simply adds something "techy" to Minecraft. That's the whole point of it. I could also have taken the "everything is magical related" way, and would have added speaking golems, recyclers which work with the power of Merlin and levitating box storage entities instead of a void storage block. But that's not NanoCraft, for sure.

Hmm, isn't it like "quantum channels" with a limited number of possible channels ?
I would rather like to keep the channel limit at the memory limit of your PC. Well, when I think about it, it is somewhere overpowered to have infinite storage. So, there are two possibilities:
Limit channel number to the number of Void Storages available.
Use fuel to "power" the void storage to get access.
I think fuel might work? I don't know... But the levels idea is definitely a good one, and whatever you can do to make this as user-friendly as possible is great lol :biggrin.gif: I mean, like, I know enough coding to get myself by with a new ore and some tools and such, but it's just all beyond me... haha.

My friends and I are working on a mod. It is called Shroomcraft. Yay.

Meh. We're going to just have to differ on the aesthetics then. I can deal if it means the return (so to speak) of one of my favorite mods. :wink.gif:
Besides, I can always 'fix' what I don't like in my texture pack. :wink.gif: :biggrin.gif:

How would the fuel work? If it's going to be another new ore, then it's a bad idea. (We already have a billion and a half of those) If it requires that I spend time building a power plant or resources on generators, it's a bad idea. If it's going to run out of gas and leave me without access to my goodies, it's a really bad idea. :sad.gif:
The reason I proposed what I did was, yes, to limit the overall brokenness of it. I surmised that something like Void Storage would require a bit of work to gather items for the recipe (diamonds, redstone, obsidian, etc.) so having an 'infinite' amount of storage would also require an 'infinite' amount of work. It's not broken, allows for the addition and removal of channels, and is sizable to the scope of one's own personal play style given adequate time and resources.
Also, if you decide to go with this option, may I also suggest an 'access only' version? Slightly less expensive/difficult/time-consuming to create, but doesn't create a new channel on their own. Just a thought. Use it or not, as you like.

Yeah, you really pointed it out. I am actually about to do it the way you say, because it feels, well, currently like the best thing to do. I might change this, though. And, actually, there is a plenty of time for planning and balancing, since I have other projects as well (I may point to Particulate and FLEE here =D ) and can't therefore work 24/7 on NC.

Use colours to change the type of nano-bot.. this way, you can use a Colour changing station..
Another thing you need is a nano bot path system and a nano bot detector that only detects a colour of nano bot..
Each nano bot will need power to perform their jobs, you will need to add a Recharge station..
Well, actually, I don't want them to run out of power in the middle of their task. That would really get on the nerves of any Systems Engineer working with NC (haha). Also, type chaning will be done by giving them a ) equipment and b ) pressing a simple button/selecting an item in a list telling them which AI script to run (for example the default miner script) :wink.gif:
Something more about the AI:
I will somehow manage it that you can create options for the scripts as well as set requirements to run it (e.g. a pickaxe). I will use it to create the AI on my own and maybe Hexicube will work with me on the AI. He is the AI guy, basically. I thought, at least.
Oh, I see that the concept isn't updated =D
Give me a week and I will manage to create a better looking one with all the recent changes and also some pictures illustrating GUI, AI etc.

I appreciate your taking my suggestion. I also appreciate that you're going to take your time with this and make it a genuinely worthwhile mod, testing and balancing included. I also know that you're a busy person (who isn't these days :wink.gif: ), and as such I'll wait patiently for you to make what will no doubt turn out to be an awesome mod... with or without my input. :wink.gif:

OK, so, each nanobot will be multifunction? So I'm not going to have to set about doing the RTS thing and making sure I have X number of Y unit? I like this. :biggrin.gif:
Come on! You refused to show ANY new things that WERE going to happen in magic chest before tile games.. Not even concept!
This will never REALLY exist.. Just a plain idea which I could make in less than 2 days!
Nuff said.
Oh lord. I bet you haven't even the coding skills to include a script engine into a plain Java application.
This is not done in 2 days, not even in 7 days or 14 days. This takes time, and I haven't got much time.
And since I am doing this, because I have FUN modding Minecraft, I WONT work on it 24/7. There is no deadline, I can code when I want and what I want and this is a major reason why I do it. So, to those people who are complaining that I a ) don't set a deadline, b ) dont show anything new, or c ) people who think, they could do better:
I DONT CARE!

@ Aero yelling earlier, I think the dude was saying he could come up with an idea like this in 2 days or less (not actually code it :tongue.gif:)
@ overpowered items.
-- I don't think that chests can be over-powered, cos the way you described void storage it did sound "linked" in some way (like the old quantum channels) but basically with chests one of the built-in balancing factors is being able to find all the stuff in the chests [if given an infinite amount of storage space, it would be infinitely hard to find the items in said space] :smile.gif:
-- As far as robots being over-powered, well I would hope they're not (a single soldier being able to always one-shot creepers, while taking no damage would be a little silly). I could see robots requiring fuel/energy to run.
*aimless rambling*
They could wait by their rally-point/chest til they had the fuel/energy to complete an operation and/or could slowly generate energy over time. Or their consumption rates could be set with the configuration. Or they'd just have the cost for their "unlimited power supply" built into the cost to produce the bot, which would probably make them more expensive (and more [sadface] if they're destroyed). Or they could end up being overpowered in which case *shrugs* -- any tool can be over-powered in the wrong hands. [Well, except Equivalent Exchange (that mod is straight-up broken... or it was. I know people were able to use buildcraft auto-crafting tables to generate infinite items with just 1 cobblestone because of broken exchange rates, maybe it's fixed now *shrugs* either way I'll never use that mod :tongue.gif:)]
As long as there's some semblance of balance, I'll be happy.
And also: Robots!! :smile.gif:
When we gonna get to see some concept art for them? :smile.gif: *waits patiently*
Well, I still don't like the idea of fuel. Maybe they will get some maintenance costs or similar stuff. Like, there is a chance that they break or they fetch a virus and their AI craps. So they have to be repaired by medics or freak out (regarding AI). Breaking would be enabled from difficulty normal upwards and AI virus needs hard to happen.
And I will try to get out a concept with pictures before christmas hits the households. :wink.gif:
