I had made a [Req] topic earlier that you might be interested in creating! ^-^ It'd be awesome if you did, plus it fits your [MOD][WIP] very well.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------This latest major update seems to have better defined landmasses than the previous builds had done in the past. As such, I'm looking for a mod that would allow the user to mark a land mass as belonging to a particular group, or Nation. The user would be able to set both the HEIGHT and DEPTH of the nation also, though by default it would be from Void to SkyLimit.
Alerts would inform the user of what nation they have entered.
To do this, the user would MARK a block in some way, possibly by planting a flag. When a flag is planted, a script would run to determine the size of the land mass(LM). The script would find the closest water block, and follow it until it:
Closes, having gone completely around the LM. This would result in all of the blocks with in the newly marked border being classified as belonging to Nation named on the Marker. If another nearby LM belongs to the same nation as the LM newly marked, the water ways between the Land Mass and the Nation are marked as belonging to the Nation in question UNLESS there is another nation withing the waterways.
Hits an area not yet generated, bringing up an alert informing the user that this land mass has not been fully explored yet.
Hits a block belonging to another Nation, Alerting the user that this LM has already been marked.
A LM is defined by a Mass of Land completely surrounded by water.
A LM may only be marked if:
It's shores have been fully explored. I would set this as a requirement so that only land masses whose borders have been fully revealed could be claimed.
It does NOT already belong to another Nation Group.
If a LM is already claimed, the user must first destroy the previous marker in order to plant a new one.
For MC SMP, Nation Maker would come in handy.
Nation Groups could be defined, listing Users that are allowed to build in particular Nations.
It could be set up to do Capture the Flag style maps, or to set up kingdoms for heavy RP servers.
The borders between nations could also be marked with special blocks that would allow for marking out neighboring nations on the same LM:
would become:
Then the Borders would be RE-Determined as
Mine Wars.

And after a few comments...
----------
I see what you are saying there. Logistically , setting a flag down that close to a small lake could be a problem.
In that case, lets toss a script in that tells the mod that it should determine what sort of surface blocks are with in the boundaries of the Nation. If it finds mostly water surrounded by sand, then it should classify that as being a lake, and NOT an acceptable nation.
Plus, unless the ENTIRE world has been explored, it would NOT allow for the user to mark that large of a LM as a single nation with the setting of a single flag.

The idea as presented in the OP sounds rather... well, really hard. I mean, if it were reduced to maybe just marking boundaries with flags (or something) I could say it could definitely be done, but this is pretty tough.
On top of this, it sounds like, if you have a large land mass that spans many, many chunks, it'd be not only a really intensive search (to ensure that it is one big landmass), but you could then claim the whole thing with a single flag.
I think a simpler system would be a better bet. One such idea could be to use flags to set waypoints on a boundary line, with which you could then draw out your exact boundaries (similar to the second part of the OP's idea). Another idea is to have flags simply claim specific chunks, like the chunk on which it's placed and maybe a few neighboring ones as well; this idea is also relatively simple to implement and could allow for battles over land by attempting to destroy a rival's flag.
--------------------
I think that idea might work better.
So, you set ONE flag... nothing... Two flags... Nothing... Three flags and POOF! Territory is triangulated.
Though there should be a PRIMARY flag that designates the nations statistics. Name, Who can build there, general info and greetings to travelers, Name and Location of the Capital,

Heres what I'm seeing this mod as, a way to spawn friendly mobs that will follow and attack other mobs, with a key that tells them when to follow and stay put.
of course, one would have to spend mined resources for various units, and could even get mobs that go and mine, giving you resources and placing them in a chest,
now what i would do, is allow the player to craft a block that creates an Enemy faction, so it can become optional as to whether or not there is a war, and when that enemy faction block is destroyed so are all the units of said faction, same rules apply to you, if the bad guys break your spawner block (it could work like a crafting table only for units) all your created units die!
Mod looks to have a great deal of potential!
--edit after reading a bit of the forum pages--
the flags sound brilliant, I had heard of Notch doing something of the sort, but waiting for him to do something is not our best option, I think the last idea of placing 3 flags to claim an area is brilliant, I mean, I for one would want to build underwater cities of the like, and would hate being limited by territory not going on water, lets keep it simpler, room for player creativity with the mod, and keep it optional to the game, as in it doesn't change anything about the original and will only activate when a player crafts the right block type and so on. Height of a nation sounds to complex and a bit ridiculous, we have a depth/height limit natural in mine craft, a simple, this area is MINE kinda deal would work.
The flags and spawner block could be made on a regular crafting table, units would be made on a spawer block which would be another crafting table that can be placed inside any claimed territory (so if your nation is against a mountain you can place your spawner block in on the other side of your empire, and is not required to be in the middle.
Units could be something of the following
Miner- builds a mine and digs down looking for cave and minerals, will place all found resources in a chest in his hut
Pigtrooper- follows player around attacking any hostile mobs, can be ordered to partol, and wait (patrol flags prehaps?) wields a sword
Wall Builder- will build walls around claimed territory
Archer- same as pigtrooper only wields a bows
War Troll- will break enemy walls and structures, can attack mobs for a high amount of damage, would e an expensive unit
Towns person- will build small farms to make food to feed your troops and self
Hero- an unit that will take a full diamond bock (and more?) to craft, wields any weapon (craft him with a sword he will use it, craft him with a bow he uses that) has high amounts of health and can damage the spawner block like the player
Chained Creepers- will go into enemy territory, and explode to punch holes in the walls, work as a Kamikaze, killing itself in the explosion
--blocks to craft
Most crafting materials are iron leather and such, but a new type of block could be made at the spawner block, called the life block (or something) that would be used in every unit crafted (such as 5 life blocks make one pigtrooper or a frame of life blocks and a diamond block make a hero)
Claim flags- made of wool and sticks the color of wool used determines the color of the flag (and nation?) made at the crafting table
new weapons?- should be focused on later once we have the base units functioning
I might say add some kind of economy that u could use to get "soldiers" like 1 iron=10 iron coins 1 gold=10 gold coins (100 iron coins)
and 1 diamond=10 diamond coins? (100 gold coins) and than make it so u can train ur mobs so they get better equipment
edit above post sounds nice too :biggrin.gif:
Price idea for mobs:
Pig: 5 iron coins (ur basic fighter)
Cow: 15 iron coins (the pigs superior :tongue.gif:)
Chicken(with size of a spider :tongue.gif:): 2 gold coins (the first fighter with a bow :biggrin.gif:)
Cicken(at ur size): 3 gold coins (just got better stuff etc maybe a better bow?)
Sheep: 5 gold coins (the builder, makes stuff as barracks, castles, walls and bunkers :biggrin.gif: (of wool xD))
Slime (small): 1 gold (ur little suicide bomb xD (mini creeper))
Slime (medium size): 3 gold (as good as a trained cow :tongue.gif:)
Slime (Big size): 1 diamond coin (THE MOST EPIC FIGHTER :biggrin.gif:)
and maybe more kinds idk
maybe also do so u can slaughter ur own mobs (cows for skin to armor, pigs for food, and chickens for feathers to arrows :tongue.gif:)
AND ADD NOTCH EITHER AS THE ULTIMATE BOSS XD OR AS THE ULTIMATE MOB FOR U :tongue.gif:
The enemies got these mobs:
Skeletons, spiders, zombs, creepers and more...(idk what but more :tongue.gif:)
ALSO as stuff to defend with add canons that shots tnt :biggrin.gif: (also can be used by attackers?)
wish i could compile java... than i would be 100% helping :biggrin.gif: :sad.gif:
I don't think we need more notch in this game, and the enemy should have the same units that we do we already have the wild creepers spiders ect, last thing we need is organized ones! I still think we keep the wild enemys (to be in the way kinda thing even though your real threat is the other faction)
wow you too have great ideas!
thanks for supporting :biggrin.gif:
and there will be different factions that you can choose, like in the good old strategy games :biggrin.gif:

shouldn't we focus on getting the first one down?
after all few of us have any java experience
We could always add a sorta death (or trinity idk) block to change factions of the spwaner table!
the question is, how compatible will this be with other mods? most notable Mo's creatures and Single Player Commands and SDKs mods
This seems a bit ambitious for a beginning mod. (Also, don't you need to have something downloadable in order to add the [mod]/[wip] tag? ) I'm not trying to hate on your idea, just it takes a long time from when you start learning about java until you reach the point where you can make a mod like this. Have you tried a smaller mod like adding a new tool/block/recipe to the game? If not you should probably start there and work your way up to adding new mobs and creating the AI that is needed to run them.
Don't get me wrong, it's a great idea and would be quite fun, I just hate to see someone start with a project that is too ambitious only to get frustrated and give up. I had to take two semesters of Java classes before I could even figure out how to make a simple game (pokemon clone, really origonal.)

i allready know how to make new block and items and i learn pretty fast.

Thanks, Just trying to help this Mod become all It can be, I really like the concept behind it, I always wanted to see a strategy game you battle with your troops, and I want to see more reward for building in minecraft, as in the gift of a society that you ave built yourself, and one that you rule no less, Thats the potential I see in the Mod, and want to help it go through!
Yosi56 hats off to you for brining the idea to the table! All thats left is for the community to support!
I'm trying to figure out how to make a turns fighting system...
a little sneek-peek will come soon :biggrin.gif:
