You can install Optifine as stand-alone mod by double-click on it, or you can load Optifine as Forge mod

Install the recommended version of Forge given at the Optifine downloads:

https://optifine.net/downloads

Start the Forge version and close the game

Then put the Optifine.jar inside /.minecraft/mods/
