While this somewhat falls under the category of a resource pack, It's more of a general idea for the smithing table and better looking armor. I've never really understood why Netherite and Leather armor is so detailed, but other armor types- (Iron, Gold, and Diamond) -are surprisingly bland. Most armor mods I've seen thus far add new ores and whatnot, but it would be nice if there were a simple modification that added better looking models for iron, gold, and diamond, as well as more upgrade options for armor with actual effects. Namely...
Smithing Table Functionality
The smithing table is normally used to upgrade diamond armor to netherite- but it would be interesting if you could also use it to combine armor types, in order to obtain various special effects. This would allow for new recipes with their own unique appearances, and abilities that could, for example, consist of...
Leather Armor ~ Increases speed slightly. Leather armor is, considering that it's supposed to be a fairly early-game recipe, irritatingly difficult to craft if you don't have a bunch of cows nearby. As such, it seems a slight advantage might be warranted.
Iron/Gold/Diamond Armor ~ Heavy enough that it results in slightly decreased speed based on how much you're wearing. The same could be true of gold, with weight ranging from gold, (Lightest), to diamond, and then iron. A full set of iron armor might give slightly more durability than it already does, at the expense of a 5-10% speed decrease.
Studded (Leather/Gold/Diamond) Armor ~ Using a smithing table to combine a piece of armor with iron results in a studded variant with slightly increased durability and protection, without any weight gain. As such, studded leather armor can be about as effective as iron.
Gilded (Leather/Gold/Diamond) Armor ~ Using a smithing table to combine a piece of armor with gold results in a a gilded variant that can be enchanted with more ease, and also keeps piglins passive.
Jewled (Leather/Gold/Diamond) Armor ~ Using a smithing table to combine a piece of armor with diamond results in a diamond-studded variant that has highly increased durability and protection without any weight gain.
Spectral (Leather/Gold/Diamond) Armor ~ Possibly using the smithing table to combine normal armor and phantom membrane would result in a weird 'spectral' version that would give a signifigant speed boost at the expense of durability? The haste effect sort of already does this, but on the other had the Turtle-helmet sort of establishes a precedent for armor that bestows effects. Maybe this type would only be found as a loot item?
Infused (Leather/Gold/Diamond) Armor ~ Use a smithing table to combine a turtle-scute with normal armor to result in a variant that provides better underwater speed and respiration, but does not significantly increase durability. Perhaps this mechanic could be expanded to include blaze powder, (Fire resistance); Lapiz, (Arcane/potion resistance); and... slime? (Projectile Repulsion?) These could be called Infused, Molten, Enhanced, and... Slimey.
All these options would be cool, and, (As far as I know), not especially difficult to implement. In addition, I have too much time on my hands, and would be happy to do graphic design for this or similar mods. Concept art for more detailed versions of iron, gold, and diamond armor are included in the enchantments, as well as links to the texture files below.
