Maybe someone had the idea before but one simple thing I thought could make the early game a bit more challenging would be to have to use the different vanilla trees to craft the different tools of each tiers (and to have to use an axe of the tier just before to cut each tree).
The point would be to make caving and exploring more mutually dependant (and thus the road to diamond a bit less linear), make tiers (a bit) more exciting by unlocking things above the surface with them too, and make upgrading the axe a bit more important.
That means sticks from the different wood types would have to be differenciated (stick variants are the only new items that would need to be added).
For the tiers, I'm thinking of something like :
• oak is breakable by hand, oak sticks are used to craft wood tools
• spruce is breakable by wood axe, spruce sticks are used to craft stone tools
• birch and acacia are breakable by stone axe, used for iron tools
• jungle tree and dark oak are breakable by iron axe, used for diamond tools
if this is done in 1.16 :
-i feel like crimson fungi should be breakable by hand and used to craft gold tools (for nether survival's sake)
-since warped fingi are the rarest I'd want to put them at the top (breakable by diamond/netherite axe), but i don't know if there is much point to that since netherite tools do not require sticks
The fact that sticks now drop from leaves too might be a problem (it means you can just skip having to use the different axes on the log). The easiest fix should be to just remove that feature but I admit it's a bit sad (an alternative would be to require the different hoes/tools to break each leaves — or at least to drop the sticks — but I feel like it's uselessly complicating things since it's a minor feature).
I'm primarily asking for what do you guys think about this and whether it would be interesting or just more annoying to play. However if anyone has the will to actually make this as a mod (or if the mod does exist), I guess it's still the best way to find out if it's good.
