For a while I've had an interesting idea for a fun multiplayer team PVP game mode in Minecraft, however since I lack coding knowledge I don't have any way to make it a reality. Still, I thought it would be worthwhile at least sharing my idea to see if it had any merit. The working title I've come up with for the multiplayer PVP game mode is Strongholds. First there would be a minimum of two opposing teams, however the maximum limit of teams will be determined only by the limitations of the game engine (although I would recommend 8 for a maximum). Each team is assigned a base called a stronghold and if a stronghold is taken, that team is defeated. The last team whose stronghold remains standing wins the match (This was loosely inspired by the single player mode for Dawn of War: Dark Crusade). Aside from the strongholds themselves, there would also be optional objectives players could go out of their way to complete in order to get gameplay advantages (I.E. new weapons, a shortcut to other strongholds, experience points, some kind of vehicle, etc. depending on the setup for a particular match). To distinguish between teams while preserving individual Minecraft skins two techniques will be used. First when a player is a certain distance away their skin will appear the hue of their team color. At close range the players name will appear above their head in the respective color of their team. It should be noted that objectives, weapons, and story can be as varied as the maps themselves so in a sense each one will feel like its own game. To further customize these maps a mutator system similar to Unreal Tournament could be implemented. For example an RPG mutator could be added that would allow the player to gain experience and level up as they complete objectives. Another example could be that each player must pick which class they wish to play as (warrior, archer, and wizard for example). There could also be a mode similar to the empires mod for the source engine where one player take the role of commander in a RTS perspective and can give orders to units. In order to facilitate large battles against strongholds (especially on bigger maps) it will be necessary to implement bot armies (I.E. perhaps something along the lines of the Star Wars Battlefront games from the mid-2000s). There could be a linear easy-medium-hard difficulty for the bots or the bots skill could adjust automatically based on the player’s skill. The biggest appeal for using Minecraft for a potential team multiplayer mod is that the environments are completely destructible similar to Red Faction (although this feature could be turned off depending on the map). This would allow for a very unique experience not found in most modern multiplayer games as this will force players to really think outside the box in terms of how to defend their stronghold whilst attacking the other strongholds. New ranged weapons and perhaps even vehicles like tanks, helicopters or even battlemechs could be added to certain maps in later revisions to allow players to get the most out of the destructible environments. The reason I think that new weapons and vehicles would be a good idea for this multiplayer mod is that in vanilla Minecraft normally only items like TNT and fire can alter the environment, not swords or bows. By adding things like this into the game, it could offer an experience more similar to Red Faction or Team 17's Worms games. In short, the multiplayer game mode would be a unique combination of Dawn of War: Dark Crusade's single player mode, Star Wars Battlefront II's armies (the Lucas Arts version), Red Faction/Worms' destructible environments, Unreal Tournament styled weapons and match customization, Dota's optional objectives and class/level up systems and possibly the Empires mod's RTS hybrid component as well. Feel free to leave any comments or suggestions you may have.
