THIS IS A WIP MOD REQUEST/SUGGESTION! MANY MORE IDEAS WILL BE NEEDED TO MAKE A FULL MOD/IDEA!
I was thinking of a lot of ideas that could go into a mod that would change a few simple things just to make the overall Minecraft experience better for those who think it's too easy, but don't want a mod that's too complicated. These are my ideas, though I do encourage suggesting additional ideas as I probably won't be able to recall all of mine and that might help out a bit.
Well, first of all, I was pondering the food dilemma in Minecraft. "It's so easy to get food!" I said to myself, thinking of solutions to the problem that would actually add some difficulty to obtaining and keeping food. There were three options. Overhaul food, add a new system, or do both! Of course, these things couldn't be added into regular Minecraft, so I turn to you, modders.
Overhauling food would be a bit complicated, if coding is as hard as I'm pretty sure it is. I propose a few changes in the way food is carried and how it is obtained, chiefly breeding. As of this moment I am typing this, I intend on winging the overhaul of crops, which shouldn't be very hard.
Breeding needs to be changed in that the baby animals should take a longer time to grow. A much longer time to grow, preferably. This would limit the amount of beef or pork or whatever you want by quite a degree. Cows would only be able to be milked twice. Breeding for the Pig and Cow mobs would be about... 12 Minecraft days for a baby to grow? This would be two hours, if an MC day IS in fact 10 minutes and I haven't been misled by a nasty rumor fairy. Chicken's breeding, however, would stay the same. My only change in chicken breeding would be a change in Baby chicken's textures.
Meat, and the way it is carried, would also change. Meat would have a limited amount per stack, now. I'm still sort of scared to say how much for fear of balancing issues, but I think a very low amount would be all well and good. This way, you couldn't just farm animals forever and setup a mining expedition on the foundation of 64 steaks. Either 2 - 10 steak per stack. I'm not quite sure on this amount, however.
This would fix one aspect of food and limit your food eating a lot, though it still wouldn't fix the problem or a large chunk of it at all. No, bread and it's growth would still be a problem, as you could still stack it and grow it easily. To fix this, hoes should have a bit of a mechanic change. Depending on the tier of the hoe, the farmland would have more uses/effectiveness. By uses I mean the tilled soil would only be able to grow crops on it a certain amount of times. The tiers would start with 2 uses per block, below-average effectiveness and better yield(extra wheat).
Wooden Hoe - REMOVED. Why would anyone use this?
Stone Hoe - 3 uses per block, -1 growth effectiveness.
Iron Hoe - 6 uses per block, 0 growth effectiveness. (Average)
The yield, by the way, counts as uses, eg. harvest 2 wheat you 2 uses are counted. Yield only works by harvesting the wheat with a Hoe.
Basically, the tiers of Hoe would actually be used for something, especially gold. Also, the stack-ability of Bread would be reduced, as well. Let's just make it a point to realize that basically EVERY food is reduced in stack-ability to about 2-10 pieces of food ONLY per stack. Foods with higher saturation would restore less hunger, too.
Continuing about Bread, i'd really like it if it was actually made the PROPER way. It's a really nice, effective food-- this should really be specific to mid-game only. Of course, by mid-game, I mean iron-level. So the crafting of flour would basically be a rock(more on this later) and wheat. The rock is applied to grind up the wheat and you get flour from a semi-realistic source. Add a bottle or bucket of water to this, and you get dough. Dough is baked into Bread, and bread fills 2.5 hunger points. The mid-game only part comes in here. So in addition to bread, you can make a Loaf, which fills 4 hunger points. This is made by putting crafting dough into an iron container-- which would serve various purposes and be made out of(you guessed it) iron-- and baking that. The container is crafted like a chest made of iron.
More food ideas are... Berry bushes! These can spawn in any biome, pretty much. Depending on the color, however, you can easily get sick. It's not easy to tell them apart, however, because both colors are red save for minor coloration difference. Breaking a Berry bush provides one Berry. Breaking a Berry bush with a hoe, however, yields the bush itself. Planting the bush on tilled soil will grow berries, and right clicking on a bush with a hoe will harvest the berries and them only. Berries count for 1.5 health, so they're good food for below-mid-level stage. Something else that makes them good for that level is the fact that the Bush yields berries infinitely unlike wheat, and Berries can be cooked to make Toasted berries, which heal two health points. Poison berries don't actually inflict poison, but WILL inflict nausea and Mining Fatigue.
I don't have any more food ideas I can recall, but now we get to the new system part(FINALLY!).
This new system would be the long awaited... water, and drinking it! Yes, drinking bottled water, milk, or any potion restores thirst! Thirst is measured by an additional bar above the health and food which looks like the experience bar, except with an obvious coloration of blue. Drinking anything from a glass would restore about 1/6 of the bar. You would only be able to drink water, though, if it is purified. Purified water can be obtained by boiling a bucket of water, placing that in a cauldron(not in any grouping of block except for naturally generated ones, eg. village and desert wells) and getting a glass of water from that. The water bar would decrease at a rate which would leave it empty in four Minecraft days. This would make purified water very important in the process of adventuring and mining. Unpurified water will give Nausea and 60% poison chance if drunk.
Now, let's get to some more ideas. I really would like some more realism in Minecraft, but have only come up with a few fleshed out ideas. This part will grow as I have more time to develop my plan, but what I have so far is...
Rocks, which will generate all in mountainous biomes or exposed-stone areas, and in small amounts near the spawnpoint, will be used to craft stone tools. Rocks have semi-block models, so they're still large, but can be broken by hand with some time. Rocks can also be made by putting a single piece of cobblestone into a crafting window, giving 4 rocks which can be crafted back into cobblestone. With rocks being as possibility, wooden tools will have no purpose and can be removed.
Bricks will have a new crafting recipe, too. 5 Slime with 4 Bricks in the corner creates a single brick.
I'm also thinking of some new tool tiers(Or possibly just new ores for purposes yet to be named) Which would be Bronze-- the block being textured like a mix of copper and tin is in the block. I need more ideas, and time to ponder them. A mod like this, with semi-realistic features--not necessarily the MITE mod-- will take a while to compile ideas for. So far, it's mostly food overhaul and slight changes.
Tell me your opinion, if it can be done, and maybe suggest something you've always wanted to change to be semi-realistic in Minceraft.
I really like the idea of this mod, as it's something I've wanted into minecraft myself for a long, long time. But the problem with it is, I haven't the capability to do any of the food/thirst overhauls you speak of. The tool and rock part is within my capability and I could start working on that later today.
And also I have a few suggestions for the new tool tiers. Such as, Silver, Platinum, Titanium, and Copper. Ores needed to spawn would be Silver, Titanium, Platinum, Copper, and Tin at that point, for the bronze of course.
Another thing I think should be added into this is the addition of more AI to minecraft's mobs. Such as cows are more like bison in the fact that they travel in large groups, but are rarely spotted. And pigs are more like boars and try to attack you. The addition of some fish mobs would be good and you could start to overhaul fishing as well with maybe some hand-fishing and harpoons.
PM me when you see this, I'll start on the tools right away.
