In minecraft, space isn't space. It's air, which takes up memory. More space= More air = More memory. So your game would run terribly.
Maybe your game would, sir. I used the 512 height mod. It's also easy to make it so it doesn't lag, but for some reason Notch insists on ridiculous heights for chunks.

Again, not everyone has a slower computer. Not saying you do either.. but my computer could handle it.. I just need the mod made because I' no good at coding things.. or finding how to do it.. plus if its made, I can guarantee it'll get popular.

It's because he wants the best for his players, other than you.
Anywho i would have nothing against it IF you would have an option in the option menu which says 128,256 etc.. so you can select which height you want,i am fairly confident that my computer would be able to run 256 but not 512.

It is out of the question if the game will crash, glitch and delete any structures. So an alternative would be to get a mod with earthmoving machines, Powercraft, Techstacks heavy machinery mod, or Buildcraft are a few that you could use to excavate the land and lower it to then build on it. Some mods even have tree planting machines to restore any habitat. That way, if you need to build high, there is land low enough to suit your needs and you only need to clear trees and build. Besides, these mods have many other useful machines that you can use around your world.

I support heavy equipment 100 percent. When life gives you lemons, make floor cleaner and use artificial flavours to make lemonade.
Take a look at the CubicChunks mod. It basically removes both the floor and the ceiling of the world... And that means, Sky and Void Far Lands!

97% of teenagers would cry if they saw Justin Bieber on top of a tower about to jump. If your the 3% who is sitting there with popcorn screaming "DO A BACKFLIP!", copy and paste this as your signature.
Long overdue, fast forward to 2020 and nothing changed.
Some tweaks would need to be done to make cubic chunks a viable part of the vanilla game though.
The first, is there would need to be a cap on terrain height to prevent terrain generation above a certain limit, note, build height limit and terrain generation are not the same thing.
The second is they would need to add a way for people to convert existing worlds over to the new world type, deleting bedrock between coordinates 0 and 5 Y and moving it and the void further down.
However it would be a good opportunity to add a new biome type, floating islands biome, a new variant of an ocean biome.
Great for Builders!

We should make the world load the same way vertically as it does horizontally so more air will be generated when needed.

With great power comes great electricity bill.

A mod known as Cubic Chunks I believe already does this.
