Time travel mod ! is definetly a good selling name for people looking for mods.
We can only hope that a coder wants to do it. I'm not a coder but I try to give ideas that are coder friendly.
I must say I'm a sci-fi fan and in that domain my favorite topic is time travel. So your post immediately got my attention. While reading I thought : what a silly idea... But after all why not add some sci-fi silliness in MineCraft.
The sky rift thing would be amazing. It might be hard on the cpu but not impossible to do. Blocks flying in the sky would be a lot of work to code. But alone it could be the Sky rift mod.
If a coder likes the time travel part but doesnt want to code flying blocks, instead it could be few blocks disappearing as you walk around.
Also some people noticed the complexity of recordind everything you do to be able to see your past self.
A way to avoid it would be to save the world. Regenerate the clean version with the seed. Then there could be a bot controlled by the computer (with your skin) that tries to reproduce the saved world, mainly your house. And he doesnt have to actually gather the materials. What you think about that ?
Maybe its still too hard to save a world and have a bot reproduces it. So the bot could just be hanging around digging holes, cutting trees, trying to survive. I hope you would not be too disapointed if you don't see your past self doing exacly what you did since you started the game. In best case that part should be done last.
Back with the rift... maybe when you arrive in the past there is no rift and from a little scratch in the sky it becomes a giant black hole. Every time you come close to your past self bot, the rift goes bigger. Maybe anything you do, the rift goes bigger ? altering the past is never good after all.
What about a helpful rift ? what if the only blocks that are sucked in the sky would be dirt, sand, trees and if possible water. And when it goes in the sky it never comes back. (Maybe water doesnt go in the sky but the sea level goes down slowly)
What happens when you kill your past self or when the rift is too big ? There are few options for that:
1-You start a new game in a brand new world or in a world like aether. Or
2-You kill your past self or he is killed by a mob. Then the rift stop and the paradox is fixed cause there is only 1 copy of yourself now on. You continue playing in the same world so you are starting over again but good news there is a lot less sand, dirt, trees and water. Or
3-You are sucked into the rift, both past and future world merge. You merge with your past self so you are alone again. You are left in a world where 1 block on 2 comes from the rifted past world and 1 block on 2 comes from the previously saved before time travel world. There would be missing block in your house but it would not be too bad if you get back all of your chests in their place with everything there was in it. And if you go down in your mines there would be some ores that you mined before.
Any options allows you to repeat the time travel. And as you said the device would be broken and you have to build another one. I suggest the time traveling itself would break the device. If you are crazy enough to craft another one and use it while your past copy is alive. Then it does the same as the 1st time and there is still only one copy of you. Not an increasing number of copies. That would be a coder's nightmare. Unless the copies are just basic bots, it would not be too hard to manage but interesting to see.
The other thing is I would like to see that happen on a multiplayer server. (Just writing this I might have created a paradox in some coders heads.) maybe everyone goes in the past but you are the only one with a past self. Anyone digging or killing mobs increase the intensity of the rift. Anyone might kill your copy to end the rift.
Well your idea certainly inspired me. I hope I'm not breaking too much of what you believe is the essence of that mod.
I would think that glowstone blocks should be the endgame items in the watch.
because you need the diamonds to get obsidian, obsidian to get netherrack and glowstone.

this won't actually be to hard I think. There is currently a mod called the tornado mod which picks up dirt/sand/gravel etc. and makes them fly through the air like in a tornado and it actually doesn't cause to much lag. compared to that this should be easy as the blocks only have to move up and only a couple at a time.
Also some people noticed the complexity of recordind everything you do to be able to see your past self.

for me to be satisfied with that it would also need to remove all the blocks you removed and do the whole thing in order. and if your doing that you may as well go the whole hog. :wink.gif:

might be interesting to observe a bot play Minecraft to see what it does. but not really what this suggestion is about.
Back with the rift... maybe when you arrive in the past there is no rift and from a little scratch in the sky it becomes a giant black hole. Every time you come close to your past self bot, the rift goes bigger. Maybe anything you do, the rift goes bigger ? altering the past is never good after all.
kinda what the Paradox-o-meter is for. I would prefer it if the rift didn't open till the the paradoxes become to great rather than a steadily opening one. after all, when you were your past-self you didnt see a rift in the sky, did you? :tongue.gif:
What about a helpful rift ? what if the only blocks that are sucked in the sky would be dirt, sand, trees and if possible water. And when it goes in the sky it never comes back. (Maybe water doesnt go in the sky but the sea level goes down slowly)
Don't really see how it is helpful, but thats basically what it does now.

heh. not sure I understood all this but from what I did understand it sounds pretty good. But I subscribe to the view that your past self needs to survive rather than die in order to make only one of you. or else how would you still exist if you died in the past?
Any options allows you to repeat the time travel. And as you said the device would be broken and you have to build another one. I suggest the time traveling itself would break the device. i prefer the devce to be deactivated upon use rather than destroyed. It should only be broken when you travel through the rift as the Temporal correction energies overwhelm the Temporal shift energies of the TSD.
crafting another TSD in the past would allow you to travel back from there but you would then have 2 deactivated TSD, and the first one would never reactivate, making it useless.
I'd rather not think about SMP. It would just be a nightmare beyond belief.
Well your idea certainly inspired me. I hope I'm not breaking too much of what you believe is the essence of that mod.
Sorry for the long post. Thanks for reading.
Nonsense. I love having long posts to reply too, and I'm glad I inspired you.
I would think that glowstone blocks should be the endgame items in the watch.
because you need the diamonds to get obsidian, obsidian to get netherrack and glowstone.
just a thought :laugh.gif:
possibly, but Glowstone is fairly easy to find once you get to the nether and technically you need less diamonds to get there than you do for my method. It's more of a sacrifice to use diamonds than any other material.
I urge you to contact some modding teams. (bigbrother and aether would be awesome) because this mod seems completely possible and a great endgame. But if it is truly endgame, make the TSD diamond blocks not just diamonds. My suggestion is the paradox-o-meter crafting stays the same and the TSD changes to:
:dry.gif:
where is diamond block, is gold block, is obsdian and :dry.gif: is clock. that would make it great.
ps. the world regeneration when first going back in time would not be able to go off the seed as of 1.8.

this sounds like an amazingly close to impossible idea. whoever can i shall consider notch's equal when it comes to coding. for the idea you get and whoever codes it gets and whoever doesnt like it gets

just a thought :laugh.gif:
the only problem with that is that u dont need diamond pickaxe to make a portal.
then fill in the lava with water starting at the bottom

I'll think about contacting these guys as you're the second person to suggest this. maybe later.
As for the recipe, I don't really want people mining for 3 days straight trying to get the resources for it. I want it to be something that they can make out of resources they already have after playing MC normally for a week or two. That being said maybe it could use a price hike. I will consider this.

Thanks :smile.gif: . And I will also be impressed with whoever makes this. They would have to be pretty awesome :biggrin.gif: .
if you made it possible to go to the future too, you can't have a future self, if you're gonna allow a past self that creates paradoxes if messed with when going back in time, you can't have a future self when you go to the future, cause if you go to the future then you jumped there and did not exist in the time you skipped, therefore you can not find a future version of yourself to mess with
all of above sounds epic and would b orsome if some1 did make it :biggrin.gif: [hehe these smiles r orsome :biggrin.gif: ...anyway]
k now 4 some usfullness =D
1. wot happens if u die in the past? do u just respawn in the same time[yay f logic :laugh.gif: ] or respawn back in the world b4 u used the TSD cos the rift took u back...or something alse happens
2. a way 2 save space with saving the map so u dont end up with 2, one edited and one with the unedited chunks[might slowdown while generating and saving unedited chunks] is 2 just use the same seed, cos aslong as u have the mod instaled when u create the new map then if the mod saves the seed name it will b able 2 create a idenitcal map without 2 much worry, urll just have 2 make sure u dont update [any world generating file edit will stuff this up].
3. another way 2 save memory is instead of saving every thing u do u could just record 'main' points like
spawned x,y,z[cos spawn on seed]
walk 10[seconds]
tree punch 34[intill 34 wood is colected] xyz
block place xyz [smp servers can record block edits easy so not much dificlty]
...[load of block places, makeing small hut =D][alo dont have 2 worry about any crafting]
walk 21 [between where u r now 2 next xyz]
kill sheep 2[2 sheep, not seconds, sheep geneated somewhere in ^ walking space]
click xyz[opening door/trapdoor/activating redstone thingy]
click xyz[sleeping, person just lies in bed till morning]
dig dirt 20[20 dirt is colected] [between]xyz-xyz[just digs random dirt that touches each edge]
mine stone[stone pick ax] xyz-xyz
mine iron 4 [mines 4 iron from vine] xyz[first iron block on vine]
...more stuff
with that just being in a text sorta file [like said above in other posts, just stated a way it could work]... and it kinda just generalise it, cos who is realy going 2 remeber what thay did 2 the xyz
4. aaaand another thing 2 save memory, is have a max time in past sorta thing, so after a certain amount of time [say 5mc days[just a random day]] the rift starts opening up at +1Paradox points every min and when day 6 comes, not matter how big[although it will b over 20 by then] u get sucked in and sent back 2 where u used the tsd the first time. this way no matter how long it is intill u first use a tsd after the 6th day of recording[can b wot eva date though] the file wont keep getting bigger
cos with 1.8 having npc vilages wot u could try 4 the future thing is when u go in2 the future there buildings get taller, more houses r made, and instead of stone its iron and glass building, or something like that, and any mine u made can b made in2 abandoned mines, ur houses u made might get broken a bit...and so on

Yes. that is a good point and it did occur to me. But if there is a way to go back into the present then you would still be there in the future :tongue.gif: .
in any case I haven't fully decided on what will be in the future yet, so I may not decide to include a future self.

5. last and not important at all... i like pie
If you die in the past I think you will respawn in the past either at your bed if you slept in one or at the normal respawn point if you haven't or it's missing/obstructed.
I like your ideas for memory saving they are the ones I had been loosely thinking myself and I think they could work with a good coder to code them. But im not sure about the maximum time in the past bit. I kinda like the idea of living up to the point you left. but this may be a neccesary evil if memory gets too much of an issue.
And pie is good.
cos with 1.8 having npc vilages wot u could try 4 the future thing is when u go in2 the future there buildings get taller, more houses r made, and instead of stone its iron and glass building, or something like that, and any mine u made can b made in2 abandoned mines, ur houses u made might get broken a bit...and so on
Nice ideas, but I don't want to go too far into the future but I like the idea of NPC villages becoming bigger and more complex.
This would take up an enormous amount of memory, it would have to store EVERYTHING that you've ever done.
...but what if you go back in time to stop yourself from going back in time?
it would just add a lot of paradox points, and probably fill up the meter.
also, my addition idea: it just takes you back 5 minutes. that way, the world would be a lot more similar, it would take up less memory, and, after just 5 minutes, a world would be ready for time travel, as opposed to having to create a whole new world, so as to have everything recorded.

That would be rather boring...
What is the point of spending 8 diamonds, 4 gold and 1 redstone, for 5 minutes of gameplay where you will hardly get to experience any of the content this mod suggestion offers?
If the coders had to do this because it takes up too much memory, I would rather they didn't bother making the mod at all.
Now that 1.8 is out it occurs to me that generating the past from the seed won't always work (as some people have pointed out).
This can be easily gotten around though by the mod simply saving of the world when the mod is first used. or you could perhaps select an option to use the seed if you are using a newly generated world to cut down on memory usage.
1.8 Bump.
I did a quick search and I don't think anything like this has been suggested before and I dont think this has been made. if it has, give me a link!
Hi there forumers!
I had an idea about time travel in Minecraft today. While there are mods that allow you to travel back to the age of dinosaurs there isn't one that allows you to travel back to more recent times, say to when your world was first generated and you first started playing.
I thought about it a bit and wondered if it would actually be possible. I know almost nothing about javascript or the MC source code so I don't know but for this topic I'm just going to assume it is.
Back to the Past!
Everyone gets to a point where they get a bit bored of their world. you have all the diamonds you could ever hope to use and have built epic structures including mineshafts and buildings etc.
but what if you could relive it? Let me explain
Using those Diamonds you have collected you craft one of the two items that this mod adds to the game. The Temporal Shift DeviceTM. or basically the thing that lets you go back in time.
Suggested crafting recipe perhaps something like this:
:cool.gif:
(proper picture pending)
where :cool.gif: = Watch/clock
Why so many diamonds you ask? well this is kind of an endgame device. and as such should require endgame material. hence the diamonds.
With this Temporal Shift DeviceTM it's time to go back in time! right clicking with it in your hand should do the trick.
Entering the Past...
So where does this "TSD" take you?
Good question (even though it's pretty obvious, i've mentioned it about 3 times).
It takes you to back in time when your world was first generated. all your creations and items are gone. They haven't been made yet!
*WARNING* the TSD takes you back to to the same geographical location that you were standing at when you use it. if you are standing on top of a tall tower that you built, you will fall upon arrving in the past as the tower won't be there! you have been warned!
"But Black Drath! what is the point of this?" you ask "if I wanted a new world I would have just made another save!"
ah! but this is different. as you are not alone in this world anymore. You now share it with... your Past-Self!
Seeing double
When you enter the past, depending upon how close you are to your spawn point you may see your "self" punching down trees and building his first shelter to evade the monsters of the night. just like you did all those many days/weeks/months/years ago. in fact it's exactly the same. Because it IS you! (if that wasn't already clear...)
After observing yourself punching trees and collecting first day resources you decide to make contact, just to see what would happen.
of course if you are a fan of sci-fi, you know that this is the thing you should definitly NOT do. but they it's a game. may as well. right?
so you come up behind your "self" and he turns around and sees you...
Paradoxes
Suddenly the world is seen, as if through a purple haze and in slow motion. you hear white noise and moving objects have motion blur... you have entered into paradox-state.
when a severe paradox occurs, like when your past self sees your present self, when you past self is somehow interupted in his actions by your influence (ie. he/she falls down a hole you dug and can't get out) or the world isn't changed by your past self when it is supposed too (ie. you kill a creeper that was destined to blow up your house), or anything else like that causes you to go into paradox state. this has some visual effects to go with it (listed above). this lasts as long as the paradox is happening, (ie. as long as you are in your past-self's field of vision) and then a few seconds after. the world will continue as normal during the paradox with changes you have made but when the paradox ends, time will "correct" itself to the point it should be at. so if your past-self fell down a hole you made, it will go into paradox state for a few seconds, then when the paradox ends he will "teleport" to where he should be, and go about as if nothing happened.
Paradox points
The severity and length of the paradoxes contributes to a pool of points known as "paradox points." these can be measured on the other item that you can make in this mod, the Paradox-O-MeterTM. made the same way as the TSD but with a compass instead of a watch. hope you brought those diamonds into the past with you!
Here is a list of typical paradoxes and associated points. (/s means per second)
Past self sees you 5+1/s
Past self is severly displaced 3
Blocks aren't added/removed by past self when meant to 1
Past self sees blocks you have placed (not removed) 2
Past self doesn't lose/gain health and/or die when meant to 5
Past self loses/gains health and/or dies when not meant to 5
You personally kill your past self 20
Your past self doesn't collect a block/kill a mob etc. he is meant too. 4
however you are granted a certain amount of flexibility. so you can still build and things as long as your past self doesn't come across your building and you don't kill a mob he was meant to etc.
A rift in time
When the paradox-o-meter reaches 20. The universe itself will tear open. a rift in the sky will appear and start sucking objects through it, starting with your past self. after that it will start sucking up random blocks, mobs and items that are on the surface and within the loaded chunks, at about a rate of 1 object per second. it can also suck up you!
When you are sucked into the rift you be deposited back in your own time, at the same place and time that you left with nothing changed except what you brought back with you. also your TSD will be broken beyond repair and your Paradox-o-meter will be reset to 0.
Lets do the time warp again!
If you somehow manage to last the whole time till when your past self goes back in time and you are once again alone, your paradox-o-meter will be reset to 0 and your TSD will become reactivated (by the way it becomes deactivated when in the past). You can now go back in time again! it's just the same as the first time except there will now be 2 past-selves to share the world with. and you can potentially do this as many times as you like, but it may start to get crowded...
if you are sucked into the time rift then after making another TSD you can go back again but it will be like you've gone back for the first time. making the whole thing basically reset.
And that's it!
hope you liked my mod suggestion.
I realise that there may be technical limitations that may make this mod impossible to make but I think if someone can do it, it would be pretty damn awesome. :biggrin.gif:
feel free to suggest and ask questions! I'll reply to them when I get round to it :smile.gif:
If you are interested in trying to make this mod, by all means feel free. You don't have have to ask my permission or give me credit or anything like that. But I would like to know if you are going to try :biggrin.gif: (just post on this topic or on my profile).
Also, have a look at my ideas at the top of page 2 for time travel into the future and let me know what you think about them and if you have any of your own.
There are people out there now making a Doctor Who mod, complete with TARDIS. Get in touch with them, and see if they can use the paradox thing. Also, if anything you do has the possibility of causing a paradox, what CAN you do?

Well you can still do alot of things, as long as you don't interfere with you past self too much.
For example you can build your own secret base in the past where you can live and mine if you need, you just have to be careful you do not interfere with your past-self's activites, which is part of the fun.
You can still interefere with him a little bit, like if you dig a 1 deep block hole and your past self falls down it while walking about, he will just jump and and keep walking without causing a paradox. However if you dig a 10 deep hole that he falls down and he has no way of getting to where he has to go to next in the time he is meant too, this WILL cause a paradox. He will then teleport to where he is supposed to be.
So you are granted a certain amount of flexibilty to do stuff.
As for the Doctor Who mod, I've heard of it. I am a fan of Doctor Who but this mod idea doesn't come from it. The Doctor rarely travels into his own timeline like in this mod so I'm not sure this idea is relevant to a Doctor Who mod. Looks good though
sounds like you want to make a mod like a game my friends and I made for Global Game Jam 2011

controls are arrow keys and space bar to interact, goal is to make it to the teleporter and go through it with space bar.
After doing this you will be sent back to the beginning and will have to make it to the end again with out disturbing your previous character. Then it snow balls, very fun!
I'm very inactive on the forums, so find me through reddit (/u/888888Zombies) or twitter (@888888Zombies)

Sorry for the long post. Thanks for reading.
because you need the diamonds to get obsidian, obsidian to get netherrack and glowstone.
just a thought :laugh.gif:
for me to be satisfied with that it would also need to remove all the blocks you removed and do the whole thing in order. and if your doing that you may as well go the whole hog. :wink.gif:
might be interesting to observe a bot play Minecraft to see what it does. but not really what this suggestion is about.
kinda what the Paradox-o-meter is for. I would prefer it if the rift didn't open till the the paradoxes become to great rather than a steadily opening one. after all, when you were your past-self you didnt see a rift in the sky, did you? :tongue.gif:
Don't really see how it is helpful, but thats basically what it does now.
heh. not sure I understood all this but from what I did understand it sounds pretty good. But I subscribe to the view that your past self needs to survive rather than die in order to make only one of you. or else how would you still exist if you died in the past?
i prefer the devce to be deactivated upon use rather than destroyed. It should only be broken when you travel through the rift as the Temporal correction energies overwhelm the Temporal shift energies of the TSD.
crafting another TSD in the past would allow you to travel back from there but you would then have 2 deactivated TSD, and the first one would never reactivate, making it useless.
I'd rather not think about SMP. It would just be a nightmare beyond belief.
Nonsense. I love having long posts to reply too, and I'm glad I inspired you.
possibly, but Glowstone is fairly easy to find once you get to the nether and technically you need less diamonds to get there than you do for my method. It's more of a sacrifice to use diamonds than any other material.
:dry.gif:
where is diamond block, is gold block, is obsdian and :dry.gif: is clock. that would make it great.
ps. the world regeneration when first going back in time would not be able to go off the seed as of 1.8.
the only problem with that is that u dont need diamond pickaxe to make a portal.
then fill in the lava with water starting at the bottom
I'll think about contacting these guys as you're the second person to suggest this. maybe later.
As for the recipe, I don't really want people mining for 3 days straight trying to get the resources for it. I want it to be something that they can make out of resources they already have after playing MC normally for a week or two. That being said maybe it could use a price hike. I will consider this.
Thanks :smile.gif: . And I will also be impressed with whoever makes this. They would have to be pretty awesome :biggrin.gif: .
k now 4 some usfullness =D
1. wot happens if u die in the past? do u just respawn in the same time[yay f logic :laugh.gif: ] or respawn back in the world b4 u used the TSD cos the rift took u back...or something alse happens
2. a way 2 save space with saving the map so u dont end up with 2, one edited and one with the unedited chunks[might slowdown while generating and saving unedited chunks] is 2 just use the same seed, cos aslong as u have the mod instaled when u create the new map then if the mod saves the seed name it will b able 2 create a idenitcal map without 2 much worry, urll just have 2 make sure u dont update [any world generating file edit will stuff this up].
3. another way 2 save memory is instead of saving every thing u do u could just record 'main' points like
with that just being in a text sorta file [like said above in other posts, just stated a way it could work]... and it kinda just generalise it, cos who is realy going 2 remeber what thay did 2 the xyz
4. aaaand another thing 2 save memory, is have a max time in past sorta thing, so after a certain amount of time [say 5mc days[just a random day]] the rift starts opening up at +1Paradox points every min and when day 6 comes, not matter how big[although it will b over 20 by then] u get sucked in and sent back 2 where u used the tsd the first time. this way no matter how long it is intill u first use a tsd after the 6th day of recording[can b wot eva date though] the file wont keep getting bigger
5. last and not important at all... i like pie
Yes. that is a good point and it did occur to me. But if there is a way to go back into the present then you would still be there in the future :tongue.gif: .
in any case I haven't fully decided on what will be in the future yet, so I may not decide to include a future self.
To be honest I wasn;t sure if it could be done when I first posted the idea, but I'm starting to hope that it might just be possible...
Nice ideas, but I don't want to go too far into the future but I like the idea of NPC villages becoming bigger and more complex.
it would just add a lot of paradox points, and probably fill up the meter.
also, my addition idea: it just takes you back 5 minutes. that way, the world would be a lot more similar, it would take up less memory, and, after just 5 minutes, a world would be ready for time travel, as opposed to having to create a whole new world, so as to have everything recorded.
This can be easily gotten around though by the mod simply saving of the world when the mod is first used. or you could perhaps select an option to use the seed if you are using a newly generated world to cut down on memory usage.
1.8 Bump.

Looks good though
perhaps, but lots of impossible mods have been done.

controls are arrow keys and space bar to interact, goal is to make it to the teleporter and go through it with space bar.
After doing this you will be sent back to the beginning and will have to make it to the end again with out disturbing your previous character. Then it snow balls, very fun!
