Sorry if someone mentioned this already (I gotta get off the computer soon so no time to skim the thread), but this reminds me of this game where you combine elements to form more complex elements, and the fun of the game is in slowly figuring out the combinations.
Only, that game had tons of combinations. And there wasn't any time between proposing a solution and seeing if it worked or not.

My YouTube channel is currently on hiatus, but I hope to get back to it at some point. Content is fairly random, but can be enjoyable, and is mostly game footage (mostly random Minecraft clips) from my nephews and me. Most popular MC vid so far is the one Vechs laughed at on Twitter!
Instead of adding new items and blocks.
You could turn this into "before using that diamond pickaxe. Do you even know how to make one??"
So you find some wood right?
You make the wood into a crafting table and you can already make the wooden stuff.
But if you want to use the stone stuff you need to research it..
I can see this working with almost all mods.
You seen the mod recipe book?
It shows all the recipes you can make with it.
If you wanted to make say.. A cake.
You need to research it by placing the correct items into the research bench.
Then it regonises that you can indeed! Make that cake.
So a stick and iron ignot would let you craft a iron pick, sword, hoe etc.
You can only find one recipe at the time and theres a progress bar which tells you how much recipes you found/yet to find with these items.
Using industrial craft you can research tin and copper dust for bronze dust.
I can totally see that happening.
I mean. Recipe book shows you what items are needed for the recipe.
Research bench uses the recipe book method of getting the recipes to see if you can make something with this.
It would be compatible with alot of stuff this would..
If it used modloader at the very least xD
This is just my take on this matter
I like the idea! maybe iron tools and up could be researched. i see one problem with researching already existing items though: if people want to add this to a world they already have, the mod's permissions could wipe any iron/diamond tools on the map :/
Perhaps you can invent carts in order to carry up more items.. Before you invent a cart, you need to research the wheel.
Wheel could be created like this:
And to make the cart:
( means the wheel).
And I got an idea to craft cars. To make the car, you need stone wheels that are crafted the same way as a wooden wheel is crafted, but with stone instead.

I like the cart idea, was thinking of like a wagon or something that's like a minecart with chest, only it doesn't need rails and it follows the player around when u right click it or something, for extra storage. And i'll add your car design to the post! (just with rubber wheels). Tyvm!
(I made this pictures seperatly so one time theres seeds on the other its a sapling :smile.gif:)
Good things:
If you add items to the gui it also renders them in the world :smile.gif:
You can add more research recipes with one line in the mod_* file...
You can make things with this :smile.gif:
Bad things:
It only looks in one direction (cause I wanted to post this as fast as possible and i think for that there must be 4 textures)
the texture for the paper/pencil on the desk is really bad (cause I made them)
theres now only one recipe wich is really stupid (stick+dirt=planks) (only for testing)
the icon is currently only the plank texture (also cause I wanted to post this as fast as possible)
You can download it: Download
of course you need Modloader.Just put the zip file in .minecraft/mods/
To the mod ideas:
If the research tree is in the pause menu, the mod could be incompatible with many other mods which also edit the pause menu... Whats about an item which opens the research tree?
the vials ("makes three, but they can only be stacked to one") - i dont think this is possible. if it makes three it must be stacked... But whats about making empty vials which can be stacked but the full vials can not?
But today I only developed on this project so here it is another feature:
Yes the recipe is stupid, but its only for testing...
The download link should be the same but here it is a second time: Download
Good things:
It exists :smile.gif:
I think there aren't more special good things..
Bad things:
You can't make normal recipes with it cause this would require to change existing source files and I think a mod like this should stay in his own and not change existing files
You must put the items on the same places you defined the recipe (means in the second picture: the car cannot move a slot to the right) [mainly because I wanted to post this as fast as possible
the crafting grid on the top of the block doesn't look good (I made it...)
If this mod may change exitings files please tell me and then I remove the first bad thing. This would also require that the zip file must extracted in minecraft.jar...

Looks great so far! I like the item to see the research tree. Maybe a "list" that's made out of paper that you can place on a wall and right click to read. And i like the vial idea. i was thinking it could make three and when you put then in your inventory it splits, but stacking empty vials makes way more sense. Then they'd be easier to fill too. Thanks a lot! :biggrin.gif:
As for the textures and the desk placement, i will do all the textures for you. I don't know much about coding in java, but wondered if the texture on the desk changes directions, will the items rendered on the desk also change?
Anyway thanks a bunch for starting the mod! it looks awesome!

EDIT: to the only-looks-in-one-direction problem: if it may use 4 textures I'll make it look in all directions, if not I'll remove the paper and the pencil then it only use 1 texture and the direction doesn't matter.

Mind if decompile the mod and work onto that? I have 4 more coders that could help to. I also have some texture people.
The research tree on the wall. Great that was a better idea than mine :smile.gif: Maybe(no, not maybe) I work on it today too and maybe I can show a first try Sorry this take more time than expected, but I think I'll finish it tomorrow...

Take as much time as you need, this is a big mod and so far you're the only coder we've got working on it :biggrin.gif: . I did get some bugs with the current version tho. The desk.png isn't showing up for me. The gui looks like this:
i also couldn't put any items in the lower right slot of the desk. thought maybe my current mods (like too many items) might be screwing it up, so i got a fresh minecraft.jar and everything, but then the desk recipe wasn't working for me :/ .
As for the 3D desk icon, if it doesnt take too much to make it 3D i'd love to have it 3D, but if it takes too much time don't worry about it. Also, i've starting drawing up a research tree. I'll have a rough idea of it posted tomorrow. :smile.gif:

I can code with you :biggrin.gif: and I have 3 other coders. So I might give them the idea and we could start working.
