Alright well I'd like to say first and foremost that this is my first post on the minecraft forums so be fore warned if my post is not up to par with others or something. Anyways, here is my idea.
The concept is to have more powerful tools by having casts and pouring melted iron into those cast to get full cast iron tools. The crafting would go like this:
= Iron block
Cast:
[]
And in the middle you put a wooden tool (whatever tool you would like to make)
Now to use this cast you simply put it now as if it were a workbench or a furnace, but to pour iron in it you must first use the workbench and the furnace. At the workbench you would put iron in a bucket like so:
= bucket
[] [] []
[] []
[] []
With that iron in the bucket you then move to the furnace and melt the iron to a liquid iron. (I know the bucket is iron as well, but what else would you put the iron ingot in?) An finally, with the liquid iron in the bucket, you then go to the cast (which would have a similar layout of the furnace) and "pour the iron into it creating (dun dun da daaa!) a full iron tool.
I don't know exactly how strong this tool should be. I was thinking 1.5-2 times greater than diamond tools. The reason it would be stronger than other tools is because the handle is not a wooden handle, but iron. Also, the casts usage could be limited as well. Perhaps 10 uses, or 50 uses. However, I'm not sure about that.
The cast is made of 72 iron ingots for the iron blocks are made of 9 ingots and 9x8 is 72 (yeah I can do math!) The tool is made of one ingot but you also need the bucket, so that's four ingots (which probably isn't a problem considering you had enough to make the cast.
Alright guys that's it! Hope you enjoyed this idea and if you have any feed back please let me know. Also, I do have a youtube channel and if you wouldn't mind stopping by that would be awesome. http://www.youtube.com/johnmcg5
