If this idea has been looked into before, I apologize. However, I haven't seen it around.
So, having recently instigated a griefing war with a friend of mine on our private server, I came to the conclusion that vanilla Minecraft, while flexible for making elaborate traps, is still lacking in the deadly art of low-impact eliminations. That is, for the most part, I'd like to make traps that don't run the risk of blowing up half my friend's buildings in the process.
Yes, I think there needs to be a mod for the ethically challenged, the morally disinclined, the griefer within each of us that yearns to crush our friends, but not our friends' creations. Sure, you can make lava traps (which my friend will find in the coming days), but the cleanup is tedious and hazardous. I'm envisioning traps that leave little area damage, and largely cleanup after themselves, once they've disposed of their target. So without further ado, I propose this idea to you...
PICTURE THIS:
Your target enters his comfortable, presumably safe abode. He walks over to his workbench to piece together a-
What's this?
That's not a workbench!
He's just activated a TRAPPED workbench, subtly different in appearance from the real thing, but this one dispenses a deadly neuro-toxin throughout a 12-square radius!
"Well, I can outrun gas and wait for it to dissipate," your target says. Ahhh, but you already thought of that, didn't you? That's why you used redstone, carefully hidden behind walls and beneath the floor, to connect that nerve gas dispenser to three others in the room!
By the time your target realizes this, his brain has melted into goo.
Your target, of inferior ingenuity, has determined he will strike back - in exactly the same fashion. He sets the same trap in your home, and just as he did, you trigger it.
"What a goober," you think, as you equip your gasmask and go about your business unbothered.
NOT GOOD ENOUGH? HOW BOUT:
Your target is harvesting wood in a forest near his base. Chopping away, the corner of his eye detects an unsettling object. He stoops to the ground to more carefully examine what he correctly identifies as a landmine.
"I'll have to be more careful..." says he, and he goes back about his business, albeit in a self-professed more careful manner.
In the distance, your target spots a pig. "I like pigs," your target says. This pig seems to like him too. Your target turns to harvest more wood. He looks behind once more, discovering that the pig has come noticeably closer within the past few seconds. "Uh," posits your opponent, as he reaches for his sword. "I'll be eating pork tonight!" SPOILER ALERT - No he won't.
What your opponent did not know was that this is no ordinary pig. No, friends, this pig was carefully assembled in your workshop days prior. It, gentlemen, is a Robo Pig. Its behavior is identical to that of the creeper, but with the outward appearance of a standard pig (with the exception of its cold, hateful, mechanical eyes). Your opponent begins to swing his mighty sword, directly into a walking powderkeg. Any expert in public safety would advise against this action, as it can, and just did, result in a horrible death.
"I don't like that sort of thing," says your opponent, as he attempts the same trick you just pulled.
Much later, you're whacking a tree with your axe, and of course, you spot a very similar pig approaching, staring at you nihilistically. Knowing that conventional weaponry is not a solution to this predicament, you reach for an EMP grenade, toss it to the ground, and watch as a blue static haze disables your robotic foe. Disabled Robo Pigs are able to be picked up, and you do so. Placing the pig back on the ground, it now knows you as its friend, and its creator as its enemy. Your target will become the victim of this irony in days to come.
MORE? MORE?!
Punji stick traps disguised as grass? Poison tipped arrows fired from dispensers? Antidotes to the poison which would almost certainly otherwise mean your doom?
Let me break it down for you.
Here are some proposed recipes:
[*:208cwkrt]Nerve Gas Dispenser, disguised as a workbench: created by poison gas, a dispenser, and a workbench.
[*:208cwkrt]Poison Arrows: created by Arrow and Poison
[*:208cwkrt]Poison - Harvested from poisonous frogs. I think there should be different types of poison.
[*:208cwkrt]Poison Gas - Liquid poison heated in a furnace.
[*:208cwkrt]Antidote - Dunno how to make this yet...
[*:208cwkrt]Gasmask - Modded pumpkin
[*:208cwkrt]Robotic Pig - Reskinned creeper, created from 6xPork and 2xCog and 1xTNT
[*:208cwkrt]EMP Grenade - to disable pig and reprogram to attack opponent, created from 3xRedstone, 1xBoomstuff
[*:208cwkrt]Punji Sticks: Created by Dirt, 3xSticks, 3xPoison
[*:208cwkrt]Landmine - TNT, Trigger plate
Diverse Poisoncrafting
[*:208cwkrt]Just dumb weak ol' poison
[*:208cwkrt]Slow poison
[*:208cwkrt]Disorienting poison, causes similar effect to entering portal
[*:208cwkrt]Two types of chemicals that, when combined, form a powerful acid. These two could be separated, then combined upon a trigger, then would melt through the ceiling.
[*:208cwkrt]Super deadly hard to craft poison
[*:208cwkrt]Allow you to poison pork, helpful if your target stores food.
[*:208cwkrt]Also turn water to acid 10-15 blocks from source for 5 minutes.
[*:208cwkrt]Rocket boots.
[*:208cwkrt]Cardboard decoys.
[*:208cwkrt]Iron door traps, including a rather innocuous one - just pours water on your head.
[*:208cwkrt]Fire floors - could create a furnace room.
The list goes on, but...
I think there should be key ground rules:
[*:208cwkrt]MOST traps (but not all) should not be explosive or destructive in nature. Let's get creative here.
[*:208cwkrt]NO traps are just weapons to be held by the player. Damage should be inflicted by ingenuity, not by full frontal assault. This is assassination, not war.
[*:208cwkrt]MOST traps should have a defense. ie poison - antidote, nerve gas - gasmask.
[*:208cwkrt]SOME traps should be difficult to construct, while others SHOULD be incredibly simple (ie poison + arrow = poison arrow). Just as in real life.
[*:208cwkrt]ALL traps that are meant to resemble another object should be subtly distinguishable from that object.
[*:208cwkrt]NOT ALL traps have to be deadly! Many should complement other traps to create a deadly environment.
Sadly, I have utterly no coding ability. Maybe someone will skill will pick up interest in this mod. I'd be more than happy to do artwork for it.
Despite the scope of this idea, I don't think it would take that long to code. Most of this can be done by mimicking existing code. The exploding pig is basically a reskinned creeper. Poison is a damage-over-time just like fire, but with a different graphic. Dispensers already shoot arrows, we'd just be upping the damage (especially if they're poison arrows). I like poisony stuff... Fire floors can already be done, but this would be triggered by a pressure plate instead of a lighter.
Epic. This would a crazy ass mod. And also like, what you do is make a hidden water ladder, easily assembled, that leads to your roof, and move your front door to your roof, so your enemy cant get up, cuz he doesnt know where the water ladder is. xD
Omg...this has got to be the most stupi...EPIC IDEA EVER! I mean i have never seen some one put so much thought in one request. Even though this will take ages to create (and im no modder) it would be awesome to have in the game. I support this with all my 5 and a half diamonds! errrr.. ( i guess ill keep that half diamond).

The winds of Anger blows out the lamp of Intelligence!
Having a way to disarm or counter the traps is a great idea, balance is everything in making player verse player fun.
Any update or mod which would allow the player to be more creative, even in killing your buddy, will max this game's potential.
Imagine making a passable gauntlet of traps, like a rouge challenge; rather than just building something creative in appearance, it could be creative in defensive posture. YOU HAVE A GREAT IDEA. X2 HAMN 4 UZE
Personally, this would be amazing, better than having a mod that hides the players name tags and just waiting on the top of a tree at night for a victim to walk by and shoot at him with arrows...
Plus, have a skin set to something that looks like the trees. :biggrin.gif:

I'm all for hiding stuff. Relocating your base so your enemy doesn't know where to kill you.

Ha, yeah I did type up a pretty huge post, but I think all that detail and those scenarios help people visualize the possibilities of a mod like this. Although, having watched what people do with vanilla Minecraft, I've gained a new appreciation for the word "possibilities."

Agreed, 100%! I think there should be a way out of every trap, if the target is smart/quick/prepared enough!

Two things. One, I'm not sure how I feel about hiding name tags. If sneaking works as well as it should, then hiding the tags in a mod probably isn't necessary. Two, my friend has a tree just outside his base that is huge and demands traps. I've yet to devise a trap worthy of such a hiding place though...
I winn give OVER 9000 DiAMONDS to the first person to make this mod :smile.gif:
and even more, if there was a mod that mods the players client from the server, so you can play with ease.
+9000 to this (to be) mod
I yearn for a better PvP system in this game, but as this is a crafting-centric game, it would be better if PvP is centered around these traps rather than flat-out weaponry.
Perhaps fake grass? It would, of course, be distinguishable if you are watching the ground as you run. The grass would have a thin layer of dirt and the whole block would be roughly the size of cake. And thoughts on my idea? It would add pitfalls which could be simple traps or spiced up with a land mine or lava to make a hard trap. To disarm it is simply to see it before its to alte and destroy it.

Yeah well I think modified grass could go hand in hand with other traps.
ie grass that collapses as you run over it could work well with punji sticks, or lava or land mines, etc. Again, we're not proposing major changes to the existing game, just some slight adjustments.
-Electrified door
-Electrified floor plate
-Electrified ANYTHING
-Lol
-Redstone-activated GIANT SLIME SPAWNER
-Mind-control machine - Your enemy loses control of himself and both acts and takes the appearance of a standard zombie. Will seek out another player who will kill him mercilessly. The mind control can be prevented by wearing an aluminum foil hat, and the effect would only last a minute or so. The machine would be a one-time use trap.
-Itching powder - For several minutes, your enemy will keep getting the "hit" effect. This makes it very hard to do anything.
-Oil slick - Anyone who stands on the oil slick will slide in one direction until they hit a wall or fall into water. If they hit a wall (comically) then they will take damage. A good combination for use with a spiked wall/pit.
-Gag Note Block - Will start playing a rickroll at maximum volume for long enough to make the enemy groan, and then it will play a sound of your choice/explode/release neurotoxin. It's the psychological effect I am trying to create that is the important bit.
-Dud weapons/tools - Give them or leave them in a public chest. Next time they are bombarded by creepers, they will be wondering (as they are dying) why their diamond sword isn't knocking them back or killing them!
-Railgun - When filled with a fuel and a projectile (gunpowder and an iron bar maybe) then it will destroy everything in its' path in a 1x1 horizontal column of death energy for up to 40 blocks, depending on the materials it has to go through. Maybe it would only go through 10-15 blocks, but the effect could go up to 40 blocks. This wouldn't effect miniblocks and dropped items - but it would damage players. Would be very easy to pick up and move.
- Freezer - If they have the misfortune to walk into a room of freezer blocks, they are done for. When activated, the freezer block would freeze them in place, and do 1/2 heart of damage every second. Be sure to put a window so they can see the nice, free world they are leaving behind for their icy grave.
Most of those i agree with. The mind control would be unfair and the oil slick would need to be toned down a bit. It should only send them 3-8 blocks before they come to a complete stop. And the railgun sounds WAAAY to overpowered. Its less of a trap and more of a super base defense weapon. That idea, in my opinion, should be scrapped.
A very epic way to kill enemy's whom you hate. especially if theres no plate on the inside to get out, the chest is empty, and if, as you can see in cannons, tnt in water doesn't destroy land. So you step on the plate, activate the tnt, get stuck in a room. and die from explosion damage.
OMG, this topic made me pee myself. I bought minecraft in october, and I have been working on one castle and one castle only. I have built it to be hard to navigate, and with several traps. Some pitfalls into lava, a lot of dropping lava on your head. I even have a couple rooms that lock the door once the player is inside, and in my control room a redstone torch lights up letting me know they are in there. I can either open the door and release them, or pour lava on them :tongue.gif:
Unfortunately, traps are very limited right now (I am starting to work with dispensers though :happy.gif:)
Nothing would please me more than to have more ways to kill people!
How about a net that is hidden on the ground but when you step over it it pulls you up to the ceiling and holds you there?
Different coloured pressure plates would be really helpful!
I've always wanted a way to trap someone in a room and have it fill with water until they drown... somehow incorporating that would be cool... how you would do it without changing the water physics I have no idea :tongue.gif:
A way to crush the player, having walls that close in or a roof that comes down or something....
On that note, a boulder that can be released (think indiana jones)
