I am new to Minecraft and am having to play for a game design class for educational technology. We are at the point where we are learning about mods and must download forge. I tried to get a jump ahead and downloaded from an ad-laden server. After I got rid of the viruses, I then downloaded from a more appropriate server. Then, I only got the red Mojang screen, no mods button. I had added mods to the correct folder already, but some were old; thus, Forge didn't open my folder. I didn't realize that was the problem. Then, I deleted everything and started over except this time, forge was only giving me a .jar file that needed to be extracted. (Stupid Winrar--when did I download that?) So, my forge was hijacked, and I downloaded the jarfix.exe. Back to my original issue, I deleted the mods that weren't compatible. Forge opened with a Mod button, and everything was all well and good, except I still don't have an NPC Customizer because the one I had was not compatible with Forge and I can't find one.
We are supposed to have a customized NPC tonight, but I got an extension. My NPCs need to be able to have a conversation. Please tell me that you know of a compatible mod with Forge 1.16.3 because at this point, I am exhausted.
1.Always download Forge from it's official site here (though has ads on it it's still safe): https://files.minecraftforge.net/ and mods from Curseforge https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods or Modrinth https://modrinth.com/mods (redirects to Curseforge for now but is a good new platform for search speed, mods for Forge only filtering and easier mod discovery) so you don't have to deal with viruses, just safe downloading. Mod Repost sites exist and 1000s are out there, never go with the top search result for mod downloading, always use Curseforge or PlanetMinecraft (PM less as it can have ad redirects that are worse than the Forge one and just as bad as mod repost sites with viruses but instead by official mod creators, it's just sad, but anyways).
Use a cleaner tool like Malware Bytes to get rid of anything preventing you from doing things/ruining your experience.
2.Mods need specific versions of the game to run and some need libraries/APIs. So don't use a 1.7.10 or 1.12.2 or 1.15.2 or 1.16.1 mod on 1.16.3, only 1.16.3 mods. Some cases like 1.16.2 & 1.16.3 can be possible but usually not.
You don't need Winrar to use on the Jars. Just make sure you have Java installed as the one that comes with Minecraft, Forge doesn't use, you need proper Java 7 or higher for 1.16.3 I'm pretty sure. Which 8 is easy to get from here: https://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp I go for the Windows offline 64bit version.
3.It seems you worked out how to install Forge if you got the button and profile so I'll skip this part.
4.If you have a crash report can you show that or screenshots (go to the resource packs menu with an unmodified version of the game and select the left button, back out of the resource packs folder it opens up to and go to the .minecraft, one from there if you see crash reports, mods, configs and more then you can access any of those). The mods folder only appears if Forge is installed correctly, if it doesn't work either way create one called 'mods' with no capitals.
There isn't many NPC mods I know of for 1.16.3 besides I guess Minecolonies (and I document mods for both Forge & Fabric every 1-3 days and review mods for 1.16.3 often, as you can see by those in my signature under forums I maintain once you scroll down). If your after customisable ones then CustomNPCs on earlier versions is the way to go but if your after NPC mods where they do their thing for themselves then Minecolonies is the way to go on 1.16.3 but on earlier versions it would be Ancient Warfare on 1.12.2.
If you have any other questions just ask or look for 'safe' videos on Youtube about it.
I appreciate the advice. I took a screenshot because it really helped. I was on the right track in my corrections. The final issue was solved by downloading a 1.12.2 forge and opening a 1.12.2 version minecraft (and moving the forge to an appropriate file--don't know why it put the .exe file in the net file of a library). Now, all I have to do is figure out the NPC mod, and I'll be only a little late. I appreciate the help. I learned a lot from consistently failing so tremendously.
No Problem. Do you know what NPC mod your looking for? And the conversation part confuses me. The closest I can think of is either using Custom NPCs and make them talk to players or your supposed to learn to make an NPC mod, which if your creating mods I'd say watch a Youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=forge modding 1.12.2) on that as it requires a few extra steps and even as an Average Java Programmer I got lost with what to do with it. If you know how to code then go for it but otherwise I don't know what else to say as I'm not sure what you mean.
I don't know what you mean by moving it to the appropriate folder though, as all you need is the Installer file (jar or exe) and to double click it to all it to install it's contents, you don't need to move it to a folder as the Forge installer is intended only to be executed.
Did you use the .exe version of Forge eh? Never used it so can't tell how effective it is.
But either way you just double click the jar file or exe file and it should come up with a way to install Forge for 1.12.2 to your launcher. The default install location is fine, just make sure you install it as a client and it will download all the aspects it needs.
Once it has installed correctly. Close your launcher if it's open and relaunch it, you should see the Forge 1.12.2 profile.
Mods go in the mods folder of course (go to the resource packs menu and you'll be fine with the left button, back out to .minecraft, create a mods folder if there isn't one, put the mods in the mods folder and then launch your game. Just make sure to close the launcher and relaunch it to make sure Forge's profile appears. An easier way (if using Windows that is) is to go to C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\ but I recommend the resource packs way to anyone as it works better if you don't know/don't remember where Minecraft is installed.
I get used to third party launchers like Twitch/MultiMC as it's quicker and better for mod install/management but I assume you need the regular one by Mojang you get from Minecraft.net.
