My 7 year old son has recently got into Minecraft, and wants some extra bits/worlds/mods. I've downloaded Forge but after that, I'm a bit confused how to download mods and where is the best place to get them from?
Also (forgive my stupidity lol - gaming has moved on alot from when I was a kid and spent hours playing games like Theme Hospital and Worms!!) but what exactly is a mod, and when it is installed, how do you use it?
Lastly - he really wants a dinosaur mod - is there one for version 1.15.2? He is also interested in marine biology, space, and science in general. So if anyone has any recommendations for them that would be great thanks! He is only really interested in Creative Mode - can mods be used in Creative?
As for how to set things up, there are several good Youtube videos on that and are much better at explaining it then a long list of instructions. You are also better off downloading a separate launcher and run your modded minecraft there, as it is a whole lot simpler. Take a look at ATLauncher, GD Launcher or similar launchers for running modded minecraft. Here is a video on using ATLauncher. Hope this helps:

Hi, yeah Twitch is a good easy way to look for and install mods and it gets them from Curseforge which that and PlanetMinecraft are very trusted sources.
Yeah gaming has come a long way since those games but they are some good titles from the time (a fan of Theme Hospital still myself).
Mods are fan made content that add new things. In the case of say Doom 1 back in the day (as far as I know) it would be new assets, new themes based on whatever a fan could come up with using the engine of the game or something to create new levels. Minecraft mods have so many things from references to TV/Movies to new things like technology (machines for ore processing or quarries to dig up the world), Magic, new biomes, pets, dinosaurs and much more, it's really impressive stuff.
With modding for Minecraft you can either use the regular launcher with Forge or Fabric (two fan made modloaders as Mojang doesn't have a modding api so fans make it themselves). But there is also third party launchers that make modding easier and games more manageable. Twitch (needs a Twitch account which as you have one for the forum that will work) and MultiMC are the best for being similar to the regular and still requiring your Mojang account while Modpack launchers. While Modpack launchers like ATLauncher in that video work for modpacks (a collection of mods) and make for easy downloading too.

Only download mods from the Curseforge site, or you are risking a virus. https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods

not only curseforge. www.minecraftforums.net and planetminecraft are also trusted sources.
# Team 1.7.10
Do not ask me to switch to newer versions. I will not. Many mods did not update and never plan to, and newer versions just lost the charm.
The following mods have never got to 1.12/1.15:
- Many Many more I can't play without, those are just off the top of my head
The following mods have been completely ruined in new versions:
I recommend using the to play modded MC. It makes it very easy to create a Profile, install Forge and install mods, all thru the app.

As someone that documents mods for 1.13 to 1.16 daily I don't remember a Dinosaur mod ever existing, 1.12.2 here (https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/jurassicraft) does but not 1.15.2.
I'd say download that and Just Enough Items https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/jei (a mod that can be useful for recipes as mod can add many or it can help with learning the recipes of the game) and a Minimap mod to make it easy to navigate the world/come back to locations like VoxelMap or JourneyMap are good options https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/journeymap
If you need any other help just ask, but good luck and probably watch a tutorial/follow the instructions with the launchers and see how things go.
