I used to run my own server with 70 some odd mods on survival. I remember the high quality shaders like SUES and what not kinda bogged down the game a little, though was better from years previous to even that.
Have there been big memory usage improvements and what not? Are all the major mods still being update? Lastly, is it any different to mod the game now than like 5-6 years ago? I read that Microsoft absorbed some of the mod teams.
Let me know! I'm thinking about getting back into it with my daughter.
P.S. where did all my old account shiznit go!? Logging in through twitch left out all my old posts and what not.
5-6 years ago would have been 1.5 or 1.6 I think right? 1.6.4 has been pretty good for modding I'd say, the new launcher change back then was something to get used to and modding kind of changed from core and regular mods to core and regular in the same folder. And there isn't really much META-INF need anymore with the way you do things like with early releases or beta.
Active versions of the modding community/popular versions, memory requirements differences I've noticed:
1.7.10 was good for modpacks with 70 mods, shaders and so on, it still is and the community in 1.7.10 whether it be players, modders or otherwise are very much active even for it being outdated it's still fun and has many players there because of the combat update in 1.9 which many hated and still do, the mods being just a ton of fun on that version/it being still popular or for weaker computer specs not running modern versions of the game is more so the reasons people stay on 1.7.10 these days.
1.12.2 is the more modern 1.7.10 that gets support and many of the big mods are on, but the memory requirements are very different, has been from 1.10.2 to 1.12.2 really. which I noticed with my old PC before the one I've using now that I have since 1.10.2.
1.14.4 is fine but still a mess with the base game and modding for performance even with bug fixes and otherwise. Mostly when chunks loading and your flying in creative, or teleportation but it's still noticeable. For Forge 1.14.4 is fine but still not the best performance wise at times. I just load up Minecraft with base settings and it uses up half my RAM (4GB as I have 8GB for my mid range PC) when I can run older versions at 2GB no problem, 4GB if I wanted a big modpack.
And that's with about 50 mods or so in 1.14.4 I mean the 4GB use. Mod ideas and otherwise have been interesting (played through 1.7.10 to 1.14.4 in the mainstream/niche ranges of mods and had a blast) depends on what your into but many similar and new ideas have come out since, the many mainstream mods are still here in 1.12.2, not all but should haven't have issues finding some still around, just the memory requirement is noticeable. Your experience might differ from mine and many others of course.
Has modding change much?
Modding the game is not different, but the options are. Forge which is the modloader people know yes, but while Liteloader was niche and alongside Forge since 1.7.2 or so all the way up to 1.12.2 it was fine and not that big a deal, Rift came along to fill in the gap when Forge 1.13 took a long time to be re-worked and adapting to 1.13 Mojang technical changes so it took longer than most versions of Forge I've experienced.
1.13 Modloaders to get used to if your interested in new versions:
Rift is a 1.13/1.13.2 only modloader and Fabric is the new modloader people use kind of like Liteloader only instead of Liteloader being for things like minimaps, fishing, armour hud or small display/control type mods, Fabric is being expanded upon as a more modular focus which more files like libraries can be awkward to work out but they have handled it well, but it is lightweight which it's good for developers as Forge has everything in one place which can be good but also not in other cases as it is big and bloated which can probably be noticed in the memory side I think but I'm not that smart so I can't really be sure how much Forge impacts the game compared to mods themselves.
Fabric is another option for devs basically. Forge exists still of course but it is a thing to keep in mind. Multiple modloaders isn't new as you can tell, even before Liteloader in beta up to 1.7.2 it wasn't but Forge is acknowledged as the bigger name and now 2 exist only at kind of even ground unlike with Liteloader's limitations/goals. But some mods are for either or only one of them. I make threads (check my signature and you can see 3 of them) so people can tell the difference at it isn't easy sometimes, Curse has tried to separate them but it's not that great, even their launcher doesn't support Fabric yet only Forge. Just ask me if you need to know anything about 1.13+ and modloaders, Forge and 1.12.2 you shouldn't have problems like this and many people still play on it/develop for it so probably best to try that version first I'd say if familiar mods or testing if your able to play modern versions due to the memory requirements.
MCForum Account reasoning:
The Minecraft Forums had a Twitch account situation compared to using only Curse accounts, that and the MCForums around May or June was about to be closed before it was bought suddenly so it still exists. So better get used to having a Twitch account for the MCForums these days to login and tweak settings.
Ending:
I hope that helps, sorry if a bit too much but yeah if you need some help I can get you a few pointers.

Good lord that is one great, thorough reply! I don't have the time now but I'm coming back to read this.
Thank you!
No problem.
